I'm not worked up about it too hard, really. It'll be fun to see all the pearl-clutching in white America over this, and to see what they're going to get away with, and it's going to be a party, that's for sure. I'm surprised by this lineup more than anything else, and as I've discussed in that other thread, there are a bunch of really big names out there that haven't performed yet.

We'll see.
Dont know if it was tounge in cheek, but Eminems "White America" - where he shits on pearl clutching white america - would be a fucking riot to perform on a national stage.

Not that rappers should get a pass, but alot of their cultural transgressions were just part of the culture for so long that it's almost impossible (outside of NF) to find a good rapper without misogynistic/homophobic lyrics in their history...and I think is impossible to find one without violent lyrics.

For the most part, these guys have cleaned up their act regarding those issues, albeit not entirely. Eminem still will comfortably drop misogynistic bars, dont think he'll ever drop it, nor will society make him. Hes kind of grandfathered in past the PC culture like south park and family guy.

I'm kind of interested to see if Snoop and Em perform together at all. Theres been a few rounds of friendly fire between these two lately, and I wouldnt be surprised if Dre performs with each, but individually and not as a trio.

Either way, this may be my favorite halftime show ever. I'm psyched for this.

In my small high school (600ish kids) I see at least 6 Tupac/Biggie/Snoop/Death Row t-shirts a day, if not more. Now, do they listen to the music? I can't say for sure, but the kids definitely know who they are.
Can confirm. My MUCH smaller DAEP campus has seen plenty of Death Row Records, Ice Cube, and Tupac shirts.

My kids mostly listen to contemporary hip hop, but they definitely enjoy the older stuff.

My speculated set list, based on what would be seared in our consciousness

Dre/Snoop: Nuthin' But A G Thing
Snoop: Drop It Like It's Hot
Eminem: Lose Yourself
Mary J: Family Affair
Kendrick: Humble

Given that they've got about 15 minutes to perform, this is pretty solid and can let the FCC rest easy if they substitute some words here and there or dump the audio. Get ready to bounce, y'all.

Straight Outta Compton was a huge success as a film and probably aided in promoting that stuff to a younger audience. You also have to acknowledge that younger people have lived their lives with such easy access to music, it's so easy to hear about someone and then listen to a bunch of their songs. People indicating that young people don't know who these people are/care about them are just outing themselves as not really knowing any young people.

You'd think if they were gonna have this many performers they could have at least one rock act in there. Not a fan. I'll skip it like I always do.

I would like to see Not Afraid, or more poetically start the thing with Without Me, but you're right. And the rest of the Eminem songs, seemingy have no chance based on quantity of profanity and/or misogyny. A Shake That tribute to Nate (with Eminem and Snoop) would be cool were it not for the lyrics. Don't disagree on your list except don't expect Drop It. And I do expect the California Love cover at the end, with everyone. I think we get 6 songs. 2 or 3 of them being group/multi performer songs.

P.S. I think this could be moved to Omar

I'm guessing Kendrick will have something new to perform by then. He's hinted that he's close to releasing a new album soon.

They should bring in Rihanna (not rock, but closer to it than these 5), thank Goodell, dedicated the "next" song to him, and then do Love the Way You Lie.

DUH. You're absolutely right. "California Love" will close the show, with Mary J wailing the Roger Troutman hooks.

Rihanna is overdue to perform at the halftime show, but I can't see her wanting to be squeezed into this group. Mary J can handle anything that requires a vocal, and she is absolutely going to deliver.

Despite my initial negative reaction, this is going to be a very interesting show, and I'm looking forward to both the performance/spectacle and the pearl-clutching from the snowflakes. It would be amazing to see the stage in the shape of a huge marijuana leaf too.

Just not my cup of tea. It's fine, I use halftime to use the restroom, eat, and i often turn to something else to find alternate programming. If its a rock band I like (its been a long time since) I'll stay with it, but this wont be the year

Great lineup, but I wish it was Dre, Snoop, Em, and Ice Cube. That would have been rad.
Their version of No Vaseline would be great. I disagree with a lot of the “they’re not relevant for the younger generation.” Jay Z still rules the game and he’s the same age. Nas. OutKast. Gucci. T.I. Rap ages differently and holds relevance longer. It’s not like how KRS-One or Rakim were for us coming to hip hop in the late 90s. The sounds and the sales and the relevance all hold up.

Its fun thinking of the catalogs of the mentioned performers and thinking of the songs they are most likely not going to be doing. "Ain't no Fun" collaboration is up there on the list.

I think he’s suggesting that for 20-year-olds, this is their parents’ music and not relevant to them and are going to be a bunch of 50-year-olds performing. As someone in his mid-30s, I agree with this take, even though I’ll enjoy the shit out of it.
I'm in my early twenties and find the claim that people my age didn't grow up listening to these guys, and aren't still listening, beyond bewildering. I'm pretty sure Snoop Dogg and Eminem made up something like 60% of all music minutes listened to in my middle school.

It’s also a shit load easier for younger people to find music. I destroyed like 5 computers growing up largely from downloading porn on Kazaa but at least one of those was from trying to download some random Led Zeppelin song that I wanted to burn onto a CD. Of course that could lead to too many options but usually the all timers win out.

OR the stadium starts completely dark... and the Tupac hologram opens with California Love. Roll to Dre / Snoop etc

I can’t wait until Puffy shows up with Craig Mack, Biggie, and Black Rob.
To all you artists out there, who don't wanna be on a record label where the executive producer's...all up in the Super Bowl performances, all on the records, dancin'...then come to Death Row!

Strongly disagree. Jayz, Nas, Big Boi, Gucci, and TI are not a part of the zeitgeist at all. They are EXACTLY like Rakim was in the late 90s. Only Drake is still popular with younger people. At least according to my teenage cousin in LA.

Artists like Lil Baby, Polo G, Lil Nas X, and Rod Wave dominate streaming services.

Lol dude did you Google those figures then cut out Eminem, Kanye, Future and J. Cole while dismissing Drake as a one off.

Nas had a hit album this year. Eminem has had 2 in the last couple years plus a HoF diss track. André 3000 is on a Beyoncé track, etc.

Dre and Snoop are far more ubiquitous for this generation than Rakim or KRS-One were for mine. I’m sure a lot of that is technology, but that shit just sounded so old and corny to me. I still see younguns go nuts for Gin & Juice or Forgot About Dre.

Dre and Snoop have always known how to read the room. When they needed to be gangsta they were. When Dre wanted to be business he is/was. And Snoop has spent the better part of the last decade doing shoes like Ellen and commercials. I think he’s crossed over to a star for the pearl clutching crowd.

We will get a watered down performance with a West Coast theme. It will be enjoyable and non offensive to anyone.

When is the Super Bowl halftime show aligned towards 20 year olds? Was it when Cold Play played? Or The Who? Or 70 year old Paul McCartney? Perhaps it was when 60 year old Bruce Springsteen played? And I'm still not sure why Spelunker thinks only 40 something white people have heard of Dre and Snoop and Mary J.
Where does Spelunker say only 40 something white people have heard of Dre and Snoop and Mary J? Appeal to and heard of are two very different things.

My guess is that Eminem does something from his newer set than his older set (lose yourself). His entire repertoire since Kamikaze has focused on being pissed at the industry and being upset that he sold out. Hes had such a lazer focus on dismantling trap rap, mumble rap, autotune, and ghost writers, I'd be borderline surprised if he didnt use this platform as an opportunity to bring more attention to it.

Of course, this show is really about Dre, and if he needs to fall in line for Dre and play the hits, theres no doubt he will. Hes been about as loyal as a soldier as you can be.

Trailer for a halftime show? Crazy how much this game has exploded in the last 20 years.
Yah. Wouldn’t be shocked if this is one of the highest (in terms of viewership) halftime shows in recent memory . (At least since Janet Jackson)

Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, both of which came after Janet Jackson, are the two most-watched halftime shows

There are at least 8 halftime shows since Justin/Janet that were higher rated. It's actually hard to find a coherent ranking, but I'd be surprised if Janet's was even in the top 10 since 2004.

Coldplay/Beyoncé/Bruno Mars, Bruno Mars/Chili Peppers, and Madonna/Cee Lo/LFMAO/M.I.A/Nicki Minaj round out the top 5. Right behind those are J-Lo/Shakira, Beyoncé/Destiny's Child, and Prince.

That's just TV ratings (J-Lo/Shakira remains the most popular online show).

I've never watched a halftime show in it's entirety. Or even a majority of one. That's when it's time to hit the head and load up on food. Especially when the Pats were playing.

That they had Rap God in that promo gives me hope they'll let him perform some of it live. Other than Godzilla and maybe Lucky You - neither of which would be approved for halftime - its hard to think of a more impressive rap feat to perform on live.
