I was going to attempt to make the McQuaid deal defendable until I realized it was not 4 years for $2.75m TOTAL!

I've been following this team through good years and bad since Orr had a crewcut, but they may have finally lost me with this move.

And you guys told me that they cared about analytics because they had a guy with a director of analytics title.

How did you survive the Jumbo trade?  That was worse than this.

This isn't a case of a player being undervalued because they're not into statistics.  Everyone has known Dougie Hamilton is an excellent hockey player since he was 14 years old.  The Bruins FO are just morons.

At this point, what is the point of paying for productive players like Rask?  Just blow it up and start over.

I'm baffled.

The thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the Bruins overall celly quality just took a giant nosedive this year as well.

If they were blowing it up and starting over then fine, I can understand that (even if I disagree with it).

BUT THEN WHY WOULD YOU SIGN MCQUAID FOR FOUR YEARS????

Jacobs and Kasper killed me as a die hard Bruins fan in the 90's.

Chia brought me back.

Now Neely and Sweeney are killing me again.

I'm guessing the long and the short of it is that Dougie clearly indicated he wasn't signing here long term and Sweeney wanted picks in this year's draft and not next year's.

Say they offer his 7/45, he turns it down and says "I'm not signing here", what else can you do?

Then he sits out a year? I mean, they held all the cards. And why didn't he want to be here in the first place? That says more to me about this front office than anything.

This would make sense but doesn't it seem similar to the reports about Kessel? Isn't it equally likely that neither were gritty enough for them. With the McQuaid signing that's what I'm worried about.

It was very strange. Sweeney kept implying that Dougie didn't want to be here and that he wouldn't be comfortable and that he wanted out but when a reporter asked "so he wanted out?"

And Sweeney said "No he didn't want out."

It feels like a lot of a double speak that I hope doesn't end with rumours of Dougie's off-ice activities.

Didn't mind the Thornton trade all that much -- never thought he was half as good as he should have been. It's more that the succession of crap moves has been eating away at my interest. Frankly, I wasn't all that invested in the team this past season. Too much mediocrity.

LOL what?

One down year and you're out? They were on a pretty unprecedented run of success before this year. At least in the last 30 or so years.

Wanting picks in this year's draft seems to be about the desperation play for Hanafin.

Well, people were really pissed off when they traded Gilles Marotte, too.

Then again, it wasn't draft picks they got in return.

This is wrong. Chiarelli deserves a lot of the blame for what just happened. His decision to spend money without regard for the salary cap is a big part of what put them in this mess to begin with. He had no plan for signing Hamilton - Hamilton was as good as gone before the ink was dry on Krejci's extension last year.

I would rather have seen a complete blowup of the team, with dumping of salaries to afford Hamilton. And Claude's comment about 3-year player contracts makes
Me very nervous about the future here.

But this is in part Sweeney playing the shitty hand he was dealt.

Yeah, weird when the best players want to be paid the most.

Also, they gave such a deal to Seguin and Skinner got one at the same time. And the Habs went the cheaper bridge year route with Subban, but that just cost them more in the long run.

The crux of the issue is that for whatever reasons they didn't recognize that Hamilton is a great player. He doesn't even need to take another step and he's worth what he was asking for.

This is absolute nonsense.

You want the money to sign Hamilton? Take a lesser return on Lucic so you don't have to eat his salary and don't sign McQuaid to that absurd contract.

Don't think Chiarelli had anything to do with those decisions unless he's got a Mission Impossible facemask machine and he made a Sweeney.

This is completely wrong, all they had to do was move Lucic and not resign fucking Adam McQuaid and they could have signed Hamilton.
Chia deserve some of the blame but mostly for going all in two seasons ago and coming up short despite winning the presidents trophy.
Moving Hamilton was either a hockey move or it was a Horton situation where he was never going to sign in Boston for any amount because he hated the market.  Based on Claude's comments it appears more the former.

They could have found the cap space for him. Chia made mistakes but they were almost free of most of them besides Seidenberg. There are multiple guys with just one year left that someone would take.

You find someone to take all of Lucic's remaining hit even if you get less talent back. Or Kelly. Or if you have to, Eriksson. And obviously you don't need to sign McQuaid if you have Hamilton (or, you shouldn't).

If they dumped just Lucic for picks only and signed Hamilton for $7m AAV, it looks like they would have around $11m in space and need to find 4 F, 2 D and a backup goalie (after accounting for the Savard LTIR money). Spooner and Connolly are two of the forwards as RFAs and Trotman is probably one of the D. You'd have to go cheap elsewhere and the defense wouldn't be much different from last year, which may be an issue, but it wouldn't be the step back that we're looking at. But you make your scouts and coaches show what they have and maybe you find a decent player or two who can fit into your 4th line or 3rd pairing for cheap. And you have your franchise Dman building block...

I wonder what Claude's tune is come December when he is out of a job because the B's top 6 is Chara, Seids, McQuaid, Trotman, Krug and Miller.  Four of whom can't get the puck out of their own end but hey they are "tough to play against".  TTPA = BROONS hockey

I can't believe this trade. It's preposterous on so many levels. I saw the Looch trade first and understood it, but there seems to be no good reason for this trade no matter what the salary demands.

I came here hoping to read something that refuted my initial reaction, but I haven't seen anything yet. Really disappointing.

Krug and who?

I can't even muster up the effort to find SOMETHING to be positive about.  There was a glimmer of hope after I saw the return on Lucic, where I thought, hey wait, this might turn into something funky.... Then I saw the McQuaid deal, then I saw the retained salary.  Then I saw a rookie GM try to outsmart the league and draft HIS guys!  I'm just completely heartbroken, I can't think of another way to put it.  Those of us who are fans of all Boston teams have seen some really fucking highs, and some really fucking lows.  Today is honestly right there with Aaron Boone and Superbowl  XLII for me, and it's the fucking OFFSEASON.  Today was the first round of the draft where EVERYONE puts on their rose colored glasses.

I just can't fathom the same organization making the same mistakes with Thornton, Seguin and Hamilton. Pennies on the dollar and limiting talks to a few teams. It's a good thing they won the cup because they may well not come close for the next decade.

As it was, the Hamilton deal didn’t look good — but may have had a secondary cause.

“It was surprising,” said one NHL assistant GM. “It’s obvious there’s something going on that we don’t know about. From what I’ve heard behind the scenes, his teammates don’t like him. I heard he’s a loner and sort of an uppity kid, and that his teammates don’t like him and it was unanimous.”

Good lord. This is why we can't have nice things. Clearly there is a massive organizational breakdown with the handling and development of young, elite, high draft picks. Kessel was fat, lazy and unmotivated. Seguin a party animal. Hamilton a loner. Will Pastrnak last past 2 more years? Either they are failing to identify these flaws in the draft process, or they are completely out to lunch and have no clue how to properly handle these assets. Either way, it's not the kids fault, it's the organizations fault. Unbelievable, really.
