If by 'poked' you mean 'Tased repeatedly by a guy who is holding the bear's cub by the neck with his free hand', then yes I agree.

I agree this entire thing is horseshit, but I'm sure the NFL also had dozens of calls of local scientists willing to prove the other side
The NFL probably thought they would never have to consider the science angle. They likely thought that there would be an admission from a Pats coach or staff member that they tweaked the balls and RG would drop a punishment with a big fine and a draft pick and they would move on. Or, if the Pats stonewalled, that video or some other piece of evidence would emerge, as in the Rice case, and they would suspend BB.

Things are obviously more complicated now and they now are looking at an expensive investigation that will satisfy no one.

That's the one thing we haven't seen though. Every scientist interviewed by the media has essentially said that it's possible that the deflation could be natural.

It will be interesting to see if any of the media types come out and admit that they may have been wrong in thinking the Patriots did anything untoward here.  I doubt they will and I suspect those who do will add grudgingly that the Patriots don't deserve the benefit of the doubt due to spygate etc.  I am not holding my breath of course.
They don't really do that. They hardly even did it for Richard Jewell. They chew you up, and spit you out, and move on to find the next outrage to let everyone exercize their I'm so virtuous muscle.

This story isn't over unfortunately. The league is going to make a decision whether non-human intervention is or isn't plausible based on the facts, the data, and the laws of nature. And for better or worse, the league's decision is going to be the version of record in most minds. I think what BB did more than anything is make it so they damned better not half ass it and have their ducks in a row if they are going to say it was likely human intervention, and he caused the media to back down, just in case. If the league does concede non foul play could be a plausible answer, much will depend on delivery. There is a difference between saying non human factors likely are the answer or saying they are merely a possible answer. I'd take either at this point.

Either way, there is still plenty out there for either side of the debate. Some will simply say the Pats' came up with a plausible explanation to create doubt to cover their tracks and others will say "ahh, that's what happened." Eventually the press will cannibalize their own story by covering the story itself because the only thing they love more than the blood sport of tearing the shit out of people is talking about themselves. But that won't be for awhile.

I'd be interested to see the proof that pressure can't change with cooling.  And I'd be interested to see the scientific proof of anything without relatively precise data.

This has been a witch hunt from the beginning, and media jackals who now hide behind the statement that they are following an investigation and are waiting for facts have less professional integrity than a middle school journalism class. Now that they are called on their shoddy "professionalism" they suddenly warn against making hasty accusations. Shame on them, they are a disgrace.

If they did ESPN would have put them on the air. Actually they kind of did with their SportScience series, but that didn't fit the narritive they wanted to ram home, so Mark Brunell.

Wait...what?  What other side of The Ideal Gas Law?  Would these scientists happen to be Creationists?  I hope and pray the NFL tries to debunk this.

These so called media experts who have been so quick to judge with little to no evidence to support their points need to be tagged and remembered.  They need to be called out, questioned and held accountable for their assaults on this.  These so called journalists had every opportunity to their own investigative journalism. The effects of social media just change journalism in such a negative way.  They should be embarrassed. No one else stepped up EXCEPT the Pats who unfortunately were left no choice but to defend themselves.

Yeah. It's hard to find scientists who oppose science. Just ask climate change deniers.

FOX61 in CT put a physics professor from CCSU on a couple days ago who was talking about how he was using this as a teaching moment for his class.  They had calculated that the pressure could only change .5 psi from weather.  I wept inside for I knew they had used the gauge pressure.

Edit: I just watched it again (here).  It was 1 psi from 77 F to 32 F which is off by a factor of 2.

The only thing left for me in this story is to see if Goodell has any shred of integrity left in him.  I don't expect him to come out and apologize (although he should for letting this scandal get out of hand and ruining the Patriots' reputation).  However, he must do his best to clear their name.  If the NFLs eventual statement tries to save face by implying in any way that the Patriots may have participated in wrongdoing that cannot be proved...well, that is when Kraft should say "fuck this" and demand a public apology.

Yes they will get a lot of pregame interviews. Just not the kind they like.

You can't equate this with climate change.  Climate change is recent and a controversial issue in the eyes of the public.  Everyone remembers this science from high school.  They would be laughed at.

Someone should ask Goodell if his investigators have compared the pre-game, mid-game, and post-game PSI numbers from Colts-Pats to the same data that the NFL recorded for every other cold-weather game played in 2014-15. Obviously there is no way to judge whether the deflation in the Pats game was unusual unless there's a control group to compare it to.

And if no such data exists? Well, that's on the NFL.

Steve Czaban, confirmed white lister ("Mark it zero!") tried, along with Chris Cooley to see exactly how a ball boy could release air on the sidelines.

He started with a ball at 13.5, and with a 1.3 second deflation, it lost 2 "pounds". So, a Pats ball starting at say, 12.5, to get it to 10.5 would require a ballboy nailing a 1.3 second deflation 11 times, on the sideline, with no fuckups. Too long and the ball is WAY low. Not long enough and now you need to somehow get a second try in on the same ball, without it going too low. And all that without being seen.

I'll second that I was so glad that BB had a chance to also say 'spygate fuck you'.

The team should enter the stadium with this music playing

And instead of fireworks should have giant paper mâché volcanoes that ace a mixture of vinegar and baking soda in them.

MT @EditorEdge: College hoops game slightly delayed today due to ball inflation issues. The game was in Boston. http://es.pn/15zL0zy

Let's just get this out of the way: In no way, shape or form do we feel like anyone was trying to cheat in Saturday's Bucknell-Boston University basketball game. What you are about to watch is NOT a big deal.

But with all of the hysteria going on this week with the New England Patriots and Deflategate, one can't help but laugh when presented with video of a college basketball game in Boston being slightly delayed due to ball inflation issues.

Yes folks, it's true. After the ref bounced the game ball before the opening tip, then let some of the Bucknell players test it out, he determined the ball was over-inflated and it was replaced by a new one.

You can't make this stuff up.

I have a request about the first post. It would be great if we could build a timeline of events that included what is known and accepted by all parties as well as what is speculation. For instance, 2.25 hours before game time: Refs "check" all balls for both teams. The spec part would be did they gauge check or hand check. It would be a great way to sort out fact and fiction. Maybe even color code the facts vs. speculation?

Along those lines, help me with this. How many times were Colts balls checked?

Agreed, this thing is much along the lines of 'science vs theory' than it is a dueling battle of scientists.

Part of the reason BB did what he did today was that the NFL had completely abdicated what one would imagine is its responsibility to deal with the science, at least in terms of its public statements.  "We have evidence the balls were deflated.  We know from scientific experts this can easily be a natural occurrence. We are validating that is what occurred today and ruling out possibility of anything else causing it" would have been a very different way to handle things initially.

Who knew after banging the drum all week the "journalists" who ran the Patriots name through the mud to collect a few extra dollars through clicks and tv appearances would resort to then pointing the finger at Patriot fans for calling them out.

You know what would have been funny? If he had come out with a totally deflated football, that had been dipped in liquid nitrogen, and as he laid his smack down the ball re-pressurized.

I mean, the newser (?) was awesome. It just would have been a funny FU.

Yet, people have been screaming "Guilty!!!!!" all week long.

For all the bitterness and negativity these people let fly daily, they are by and large an incredibly skin-thinned lot.
