I wonder if he’ll be called upon to fill the Roberts role if Durran establishes himself as our starting CF in the coming weeks.

If you were wondering how such a move was possible (I was!), Cotillo explains:

The deal was allowed to occur after the July 30 trade deadline because DeShields was not a member of Texas’ 40-man roster and has not played in the majors this season.

Now that you mention it, there is, Pedro Martinez Jr is in the Tigers organization.

There is also his other son, also named Pedro Martinez Jr that plays for the Brockton Rox

If I were Pedro Martinez, I would name all of my sons Pedro Martinez. Respect this move.

It doesn't seem like the Sox have room on the roster for a player whose role is only that of pinch runner. Particularly if they're going to persist with a 3-man bench most of the time.

Also, I can't see Deshields cracking the 40-man without some injuries necessitating it. Marcus Wilson was having a good season in Worcester, was on the 40-man, and still never got a shot.

This feels like nothing more than getting a warm body for the Worcester outfield after the call up of Duran, the departure of Wilson, and the injury to Michael Gettys.

DeShields has a pretty good defensive rep, so he could be injury insurance and an option as the guy to replace Duran in the late innings (say, for example, if Arroyo isn't healthy and Hernandez is needed at 2nd). But he can't hit, and he's probably closer to Quinton Berry than Dave Roberts...

Hey now, he's in our pocket for September roster expansion. That way we'll have a guy who might be able to steal home at a key moment since we can't hit a SAC FLY!

Roster expansion in September gains them two extra spots. Knowing this management, they'll both be filled by pitchers.

The same rule would be why Cole Hamels is now a Dodger, right? Not on a major league roster. Nor a minor one for that matter.

No. The rule only restricts trades of players on 40-man rosters after July 30. It isn't a moratorium on player acquisitions of any kind. Minor leaguers can still be traded so long as they haven't been on a 40-man roster this season. Players can be claimed from waivers (see Marcus Wilson). Free agents can certainly be signed.

One of my Facebook friends son faced the Brocton Rox Pedro last weekend in a 5 game series. I'll have to ask him how Martinez did.

I was at the Rox a couple of Sunday’s ago. Junior went 1 for 4 with a double I believe. Pedro was sitting in the 3rd base line stands and hung out for over a half hour signing for kids. We were casually finishing our beers on the 1st base side and when we finally left after about a half hour, he was still signing and taking selfie’s for them.
