Right Here
Disagree. Story is a shortstop
Story's arm strength playing shortstop was questionable before he got injured (and after a year playing second). Unless the surgery corrected something and added some pop to his shoulder, it's not a slam-dunk that he's a major-league level SS. I mean that can pencil him in at the position, but (80's reference warning!!!!) just because you put your shoes in the oven, it doesn't make them biscuits.

Looks like the UCL damage was significant to me.

I just don't get why people are so skeptical he won't get arm strength back. UCL repairs are pretty common, and guys come back throwing just as hard as they did before injuries. It happens literally every year with a bunch of pitchers. Is it just emotionally motivated reasoning? A desire to be skeptical? I don't get it.

I think arm strength is extremely overrated. As the chart posted above shows, pre-injury Story was averaging like ~82 MPH which is below average for a SS and he was still an elite defender. Dansby Swanson leads MLB in OAA at SS by a huge margin the last two seasons with the second worst arm (78.5 MPH) among those who qualify at the position. That's worse than Story's last year in Colorado while he was playing with a shredded elbow. The only player at SS with a weaker arm than Swanson this year is Nick Ahmed, who is also a really really good defensive player.

Yep. Do we know when the injury occurred?

Ozzie Smith did not have a particularly strong arm and played through shoulder problems for several years. He was adept at bouncing throws off artificial turf, though, not a very pertinent skill these days.

I think Story and his reinforced UCL will be fine at SS. How useful he will be as a hitter vs RHP is another question.
