We have an EBUG situation in St. Louis. Binnington entered the protocol today and the Blues don't have enough cap space to call up one of their AHL goalies. Their regular backup, Husso will play but we've got a beer leaguer on the bench backing up.

(also with the Covid stuff there should be some exemption where you can go over the cap for a game in a situation like this just to get a qualified backup goalie on your roster)

If he was on fire this am in beer league do you consider riding the hot hand and giving him the start??

agree there should absolutely be an exemption to get a emergency goalie up in situations like these.

I get that the rules weren't written with a pandemic in mind, but the contrast between in-season cap rules for Covid replacements and the LTIR shenanigans that happen for the playoffs is really something.

That’s a bad rule. A team should be able to go over the cap to call up a goalie from the AHL regardless, but especially with Covid. EBUG should really only come into play if the team doesn’t have time to get a goalie from their organization to the game. Not allowing for that is just screwing the paying customers. Their not shelling out NHL ticket money to watch beer league goalies unless it’s a true emergency.

Obviously yes.

Also - this dude telling Doug Armstrong and Craig Berube that he was on fire in his beer league game makes him my favorite player just above Bergeron.

Speak for yourself, buddy. I'd pay extra if I knew a guy I've scored on in the last couple months in beer league was suddenly playing in the show.

They should've just kept the taxi squad thing going for another year and required each team to travel with 3 goalies.

The Covid list is growing day by day and the league is entirely vaccinated (with the exception of Bertuzzi). It's not going away and they should've prepared for this to happen by keeping the taxi squad around.

I mean if it’s a guy from my league in there then absolutely. I was speaking In general.

I think EBUG's are great for fans, people love when it happens. The Canes and Blackhawks are probably still selling Ayers and Powers gear.

I think EBUG's are bad for competition though.

Georgiev preserves the shutout.

Crushing blow if Shesterkin is out for significant time. Too many of these close wins will turn into two goal losses.

The Rangers are saying the Shesterkin injury wasn't as bad as it looks. I guess we'll find out what that means tomorrow.

Also the Boudreau contract is an interesting one. It's pretty cheap money (~$2.5 million) for the rest of this season and next season. I believe the high end coaches are around $5+ million annually. So Boudreau didn't get any job security or money. Since they canned Benning too, Boudreau is going to get a GM hired above him, and who knows what that GM will want to do coaching wise.

I think it's a great deal for Vancouver, it's cheap money and keeps their options open long term for when they hire a GM. I'm just not quite sure why Boudreau. Maybe he was just desperate enough to get back behind a bench?

Bit of hockey trivia that I just learned tonight:

Who was the last active player from the NHL's Original Six era?

Wayne Cashman

Picking up the puck onto the blade of your stick and passing it chest high from behind the net to a guy who bats it in? Completely legal, but is this really what we want hockey to become?
Yes?

I mean. That was exciting to watch, incrdibly hard to pull off, and worked.

I'd rather see a team attempt that, than 20 slapshots from the point that never make it on net.

Let's say that Zegras picked the puck up in his own end and pinned it between the blade of his stick and his hip and skated it the length of the ice and "hip checked" it, i.e., released the puck from between his stick blade and his hip and thrust the puck off of his hip, past the goalie. Would everyone be okay with that? It's creative, skillful, and hard to pull off.

What if this developed to the point that almost all goals are scored like this (guy picks it up on the blade of his stick and pitches it to a guy who bats it in)? Would that be entertaining?

I would not have an issue with it as it is so unlikely to occur that I would be more impressed than concerned.
This is about where I'm at. A couple of goals a year like this isn't a big deal, but I'd really hate to it get to the point at which, say defensemen are carrying the puck around near the blue line in the offensive zone on a PP and looking for someone to pitch it 4 feet above the ice to.

You are not allowed to propel the puck into the net intentionally off anything other than your stick, so a goal would be waived off. Also, if a player held the puck between his stick blade and hip, the ref would blow it dead since they would most likely lose site of the puck anyway.

To your first point, the rules could be changed to allow for this (if it were deemed creative, skillful, and entertaining). Also, let's just say he releases the puck without the thrust and it skips past the goalie. Would that be okay?

To your second point: (1) you're kinda dodging my point, and (2) yeah maybe, but I think the ref would know where the puck is -- Zegras would be skating with his stick blade to his hip and guys from the other team would be pursuing him, so I think the ref would know where the puck is.

He probably shouldn't. He deserves 6 games. It's just that the rest of the suspensions given out for the entirety of the existence of the DOPS have never made sense. This is the most physical play Spezza has ever made in his life, it was clear retaliation for the knee on knee by Pionk on Sandin, it was on a completely defenseless player and it was a dirty as fuck attempt to injure. He deserves 6 games.

Just to illustrate the absurdity of this suggestion, if you have a stick and a puck at your house, put the puck on the blade and try to "pin it to your hip", then try to walk from one end of the room to the other. If anyone tried to do this in their own end and start skating with it, they'd be in concussion protocol before they reached the blue line.

It was a highly creative and skilled split second play from behind the net. I do not see it as some sort of gateway to the other ridiculousness you are suggesting.
