This was missing, good day of hockey today.

Flyers/Sabres is on now, and is a really fun game through a period plus.

The always entertaining Golden Knights take on the Kings, basically as soon as this one is over.

Bruins at 4 PST, but I think the highlights of that set are Tampa vs Colorado and Washington vs Columbus.

And the night closes out with Nashville vs Calgary.

I know what my TV will have on all day long.

Chicago lost to the Habs last night. They are 3-11-2 since firing Q and have sunk to the bottom of the league. Don’t see how they clean up this mess anytime soon.

Biggest problem for them is that they think Colliton is the long term solution (and they may be right), but this isn't helping at all.

I'd trade everything not named Toews, DeBrincat, or Kane.

I don't know if there is much of a market for Keith or Seabrook given their age, contracts and production.

Seabrook is probably headed towards a compliance buyout after the next lockout. $6.875 AAV for the next 5 years. It might be the worst contract in the league. He’s already in healthy scratch territory.

I think they could get someone to bite on Keith. Much more manageable cap hit $5.53 AAV), the actual dollars are low (less than $10 million) and he’s not a total corpse yet. His NMC is probably a bigger hurdle than the contract. They’d probably be looking at a budget conscious playoff team that values the playoff experience Keith has.

Up front they probably need to shed Saad and Anisimov and just reboot entirely. They are both overpaid, but they should be able to stir up a market for both players.

Also, Toews and Kane will be in their mid 30's making a combined 21 million by the time they have any chance of being contenders again. If you can convince them to move, it'd be worth doing for a good return.

But this isn’t videos games...you can’t deal Toews or Kane right now- the locker room would blow up, the fans would revolt. There are things worth more than just money. You need someone around to teach the next generation too. Obviously if you can get a Godfather deal, but that’s not happening.

Agree on Keith. He’s a pretty solid 2nd pair guy and PP helper (and his deal isn’t bad), but what’s his motivation to move?

I went to my annual Anaheim Ducks game last night. Saw a pretty wild game. The Devils had three pucks bounce off defenders for Ducks goals. And I saw my first shoot out in person. Pretty cool. Going to a live game makes me nostalgic for my playing days. It’s been decades since I laced up my Bobby Orr skates .

"The New York Rangers entered the season with the mentality of continuing their retool and that appears to still be the case after 30 games into the 2018-19 campaign

The Rangers aren’t out of the race just yet, sitting one point behind the Islanders for third in the Metropolitan Division, but their game plan seems to remain intact – they’re focused on the future.

As the season progresses, the Rangers are expected to engage in more trade discussions involving a number of their players.

Forwards Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes are set to become unrestricted free agents after the season and both are likely to be dealt by the Feb. 25 trade deadline. Rangers GM Jeff Gorton has already fielded calls for both players, sources have told TFP, but trade talks have not yet intensified.

Several teams are in the market for extra fire power up front, especially as they inch closer to the deadline, and could make a play for either Zuccarello or Hayes.

The Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks and Boston Bruins are all in the market for additional scoring and could knock on Gorton’s door in the New Year.

Star forward Chris Kreider is also generating interest and he may also be on the move later this season."

After thinking about this for a few days, I’m leaning a bit more your way...I still think it’s a pretty hard sell for the fans and the rest of the locker room, but maybe burning the whole thing down and giving Colliton a clean slate and no expectations is the move.

Elliotte Friedman suggested they’re looking at grabbing a high pick, (re)signing Panarin, and getting right back at it next year, but I can’t see that working with their issues on D and G.

He’d fix a lot of problems, but that is a tough one to pull off. They’d need to send salary out, so you are looking at either Backes waiving his NTC to go back to STL or Krug. Backes doesn’t make much sense for STL, so it’s gotta be Krug. They’ll ask for McAvoy but that isn’t happening (and they do have Parayko and Pietrangelo so maybe McAvoy isn’t highest in their list). Next, they are likely going to want roster forwards, probably starting with DeBrusk. The Bruins would probably be iffy on that since the idea would be to get a 2nd line of DeBrusk - Krejci - Tarasenko (or Pasta with Tarasenko on the top line). So then you have to try to sell them on Heinen, Donato, Bjork, etc. After that, it’s down to the futures. Bruins don’t want to trade their first round pick this year, but I bet If push came to shove they would do it. Then maybe Vaakanainen or Lauzon?

So I guess a Bruins deal could look like:

Krug, Heinen, 1st round pick, Vaakanainen?

Maybe that is in the ball park, but I think there are teams out there that could beat it. It depends on what kind of return the Blues are looking for. Krug’s only got a year and a half left, I’m not sure he’d be a good centerpiece off the roster.

In this hypothetical we’d end up with something like

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Krejci - Tarasenko
Donato - JFK - Bjork
Nordstrom - Kuraly - Wagner
Acciari

Chara - McAvoy
Grzelyck - Carlo
Moore - Miller
Kampfer, Lauzon

I'd do that, Krug is probably going to be paid very well in a year and a half and unlikely by us. If you could turn Krug, a secondary scorer, a mid to late first and UV into a slightly slumping 27 year old left handed winger you're getting a steal. Even at current course and speed he's on pace for 23 goals and 52 points. Not quite the 30/70 guy he'd been the last couple years, but a good player none the less. All that said, I can't see that being the best offer out there.

Why would St. Louis do that deal? He’s not a UFA. Elite players signed to long term, non cap destroying deals don’t get traded for Pu Pu platters of undersized offensive defenseman, mid level prospects, and mid to late 1st round picks. They’re dangling him out there to see if someone gets stupid and offers an elite prospect like a McAvoy.

Not to mention, center is a huge need for this team, wing is not. It doesn’t make a ton of sense unless they’re getting him for a steal, which I can’t fathom happening. If they’re gonna overpay for someone, at least get a center

Exactly. I could entertain an overpay for a young, top 2 center under contract, but not a wing. For example, the Ryan Johansen deal from a couple of years ago I would do under the right circumstances. And again, that took an elite prospect.

The Avs just got a 4 minute power play, because the same guy hooked two guys before the Islanders could get possession after the first call.

Not sure I've ever seen that before.

I would assume double minor and 4 minutes.

Edit: Yep - https://www.milehighhockey.com/2018/12/17/18145747/penalties-prove-costly-as-colorado-avalanche-lose-at-home-to-new-york-islanders-nhl-hockey-goals

The Avs had a big penalty kill after another bench minor for too many men on the ice. Right out of the box, Andrighetto was hauled down on a rush to send Colorado to a power play of their own. On a play you don’t see very often, Josh Ho Sang got four minutes in the box for two separate hooking penalties. Not only were the Islanders able to kill off both minors, but they got the best scoring chance during the penalties - fortunately, a tremendous defensive play by Tyson Barrie kept the game at 2-1.

Flyers are starting Carter Hart tonight, the 6th goalie they’ve used this season which is a record.

He’s supposed to be the savior, 2nd round draft pick from a few years ago.

Oh, I don’t miss him that much. It’s just nice to see him mete out some punishment for one of the league’s scumbags.

It’s also nice that he did all of it without wearing the spoked B.

McQuaid is a great guy and extremely tough but he doesn’t have NHL speed or quickness anymore. The game got too fast for guys like him.
