So, now when Detroit's brass complains about Pitt being full of dirty fucks, we'll have to discount them because they are biased, correct?

Game's basically over, and there's five minutes left. Let's see where this goes.

Malkin now looks seriously hurt - something with his left leg

he was just faking like Orpik.  It's part of the training manual with hitting people in the head.

Clearly Sid was faking. Where do you think Orpik learned? There's a progression...you follow your captain.

4 straight by the Flyers and they lead 4-1 halfway through the 3rd in Washington. 2 straight really strong efforts after the stinker in Chicago. Another good fame from the Giroux line, they have 2 of the goals (1 each for Giroux and Voracek).

Another Penguin with a head shot. This time Burtozzi against D'amigo.  D'amigo's head was down a little while reaching for the puck but he definitely went high...
He got 2 for a check to the head. Will be interesting to see if he gets a call from Shanahan for it.

And yet the gloves stay on when challenged.

Edit: If Bortuzzo gets suspended, they could have 3 guys suspended at the same time. Has that happened before?

Besides that hit, I've liked Bertuzzo's game. He's been loud. He had the assist on the Crosby goal, and he fought with Bodie earlier in what was a pretty good tilt.

He probably could've made a nice hit on that play without the follow through. Went for the big hit and probably has a suspension on the way.

The angle from the Penguins' zone makes it look very bad. The other two angles I've seen only look a little bit bad. I think they're both to blame there, what is he doing with his head down in the neutral zone like that? Similar to when Hertl got blown up earlier this season. Yeah he needs to be a lot more careful in a dangerous part of the ice, but that doesn't give the opponent carte blanche to tee off on his face. He had his head down for a while and the defender didn't care

Maybe I'm blind but it sure looks like to me, especially in the slow-mo at 1:08 that he hits him completely in the shoulder.  Keeps the arm tucked in until post hit when it naturally comes out.

He had no opportunity to hit him in the shoulder. He hit him in the face. Borderline suspendable, IMO, but very reckless nonetheless.

@NHLPlayerSafety: In looking at Bortuzzo/D'Amigo, we see unavoidable head contact on an otherwise full body hit. Will not be pursuing supplemental discipline.

Yep. Hit him fully in the face but it was either that or get headbutted in the chest. D'Amigo was low and not looking and Bortuzzo wasn't even skating.

If the player is skating face first, and you check him through the face on the way to his body, that should be a clean shot.  The elbow came up/out after the hit, and I can see that being interpreted wrongly as leading with the elbow, but prior to the hit the elbow was in.  Tough hit, but not a suspension.

Yeah, the elbow flying up like it did was the one thing that made me look a few more times. But I'm not sure what else he could have done to avoid the hit.

Tom Wilson just destroyed Brayden Schenn.

It was definitely a charge, but the outcome was much worse because Schenn turned toward the boards. I guess I can see the rationale for calling a major there, but I wouldn't suspend Wilson for it.

Why does Schenn turn when he sees impact coming? Stupid.
Because it draws a penalty. Guys are doing that way too much nowadays, basically willfully putting themselves in danger.

Some of the ugly hits this year, I don't even know how I feel.  Shanahan has a TOUGH job.

That was very reckless by Wilson and it looked like he was trying to hurt him. But Schenn really puts himself in danger there at the last second and that is what makes the hit so ugly.

edit: Upon further review, Schenn is pretty fucked whatever he does.  Wilson is absolutely flying, that's charging and boarding.  He skates from halfway across the ice and hits a guy that's a bad distance from the boards.  Doesn't have to be from behind to be boarding, you can't hit Schenn there no matter what way he's facing. Should be 5 games

That's charging AND boarding. Schenn turned because that was his natural instinct - he sees Wilson, a big dude absolutely flying at him, for like a second before impact. Maybe that was his only hope of not getting destroyed. I think it's asinine to suggest that he was just trying to draw a penalty - guys don't have the time to think that through, and nobody wants to be paralyzed for a power play. People here seemed pretty upset when Don Cherry blamed Patrice Bergeron for the Randy Jones hit.

With the speed Wilson had built up, and the distance Schenn was from the boards (regardless of whether Schenn turned into the hit, he was still a few feet from the boards and was going to be thrown into them), that hit was incredibly dangerous. If that's a two minute penalty, I'm a little scared for the sport. That hit was orders of magnitude more dangerous than Orpick's on Erickson (ignoring for a second Loui's concussion history), a hit which had many here up in arms.

What happened to the old "intent to injure" rule?

I think Schenn was starting to escape turn back towards the boards but Wilson was coming way too fast. Not a great play by Schenn, but that was reckless by Wilson.

It's not even remotely possible that Schenn was even thinking about turning in order to draw a penalty. I was going over it again in my head, setting off smoke alarms left and right, and reading some of the posts here and believe that there's something to the idea that the recklessness of the hit, position of the player being hit in relation to the boards, and general idea that attacking players are at least partially liable for injuries that occur due to their negligent actions probably do warrant a suspension of some sort. If Wilson doesn't charge, then I don't think there are grounds to more than call it a good hockey check. We and the NHL throw the word "intent" around, but the real criterion for so-called wrongdoing warranting a possible suspension is negligence.

I am not a Shanny fan, but it's not personal. There's nothing in his resume that suggests he should be anything more than a consultant where discipline is concerned. That job should be held by someone who has, first and foremost, an appreciation and understanding for how rules of law work. In the decisions handed down from his office, it's hard to see a suggestion of a pattern. If I decided who lived and died, I would have long ago sent Willard upriver for him. But it's an institutional problem, and I'm sure he tries his best. He needs more of an ala carte style to his determinations.

Sorry, Kenney, but ngruz is right here.  There's no way Schenn was turning to draw a penalty - he was turned away from Wilson and couldn't even see him coming.

Watch his skates. If he was turning to draw a penalty he would have braced himself and planted his feet for the hit. He's in the act of slowly turning, but Wilson was 100 mph and railed him.
