That's crazy town to me. I don't see how this makes Houston better. Guys like Hopkins don't grow on trees. RBs can be had.

What the hell, Houston?

Hopkins is a top 4 receiver on a reasonable contract, and David Johnson plays RB and has a noted injury history.

Is the second rounder really that important?

EDIT - Schefter suggested in a tweet that Hopkins wants a new contract, so perhaps we are to infer that a hold out was coming?

Bill O'Brien has literally no idea how to run a franchise. Holy shit. Nick Caserio should be laughing right now that he was blocked from the Texans.

Kyler Murray is going to have a hell of a fantasy year. What a pickup.

Can't believe they traded Hopkins! I'm assuming that Pats weren't in on this for cap reasons?
Well, in theory they could trade Thuney for him--the cap hits are the same, but Hopkins wants a new deal.

"DeAndre Hopkins, traded to the Cardinals for running back David Johnson, was unhappy with his contract, according to sources. Texans weren't going to alter existing deal with $40 million remaining and three years. "

This beat writer half an hour ago tweeted Hopkins would command a huge package of at least a first round pick lol
So if Hopkins comes with a "I want a new deal at FA market prices" demand, that would explain his seemingly low trade cost.

Breaking out.

Worst deal since the corpse of Joe Gibbs sent Champ Bailey to Denver for Clinton Portis. Have to believe there were chemistry issues that drove this.

Contract demands, chemistry issues are explanation for trading him. Neither (or anything else) explains the awful return.

There was a lot of buzz around the Cardinals and Ceedee Lamb at 8. Lamb’s pro comparison was... DeAndre Hopkins. This gives the Cardinals an opportunity to draft one of the four stud OTs and all of a sudden they have the makings of a decent offense. That’s good for them because their defense still needs a ton of work. I’m happy for the Cardinals though and Kyler. I am not sure what BOB is doing. Hopkins is a blue chip receiver. You don’t trade blue chip receivers unless you get a haul. Diggs was at least for pick 22. The pressure was on for BOB to make a deeper playoff run this year too. The only thing that would make sense is if DeAndre wanted a new deal and they were going to be cheap. That’s dumb too.

Here's the worst part of this deal. BOB supposedly dealt Hopkins because he was going to demand a contract restructure with 3 years left to go. Except part of the new CBA puts in stiffer penalties for holding out for veterans, so Hopkins' leverage is reduced significantly in getting a new deal.

A "player playing under a contract signed as a veteran who fails to report to his club's preseason training camp on time or reports and leaves the club for more than five days" cannot have his fines waived by the team upon return and will not earn an accrued season for that season. Harsh, but note that it specifies "a contract signed as a veteran." So it seems as if the new anti-holdout rules won't apply to players holding out for more at the end of their rookie contracts, as Ezekiel Elliott did last year, for example.
So he really had no choice but to play out that deal, unless Houston wanted to renegotiate voluntarily. It's an unconscionable deal, and looks even worse compared to the Diggs deal.
