He did a good job but isn’t the best guy to navigate the next couple years for them.

I bet there’s more to the story though. Has to be.

Like they want him gone right this second? There must be more to it than just the baseball product of they couldn't even wait until the season was over.

I love the Red Sox, not a big fan of the organization, specifically the upper management. I know they spend money, but something is just off with them.

Agree. He had little to do with the starters (aside from Erod) collectively shitting the bed this season. Otherwise his firing makes little sense.

Considering Shank was running stuff about him being on the outs with those above him a while ago, this was in the offing for quite some time.

Expect him to get the Francona treatment from the press (who of course are getting it fed to them by ownership) starting tomorrow.

I am so confused.

Yeah he built a godawful bullpen, but unless he was told “spend what you need to to get ottavino et al” I don’t know that he did anything less than the dollars dictated.

Seems a crazy overreaction

Facing a tough decision on Betts; sign him long term, trade and get what you can for him, or let him walk. The person making that decision needs to be here long term, not someone in the last year of their contract.

Yeah, a pathetic attempt to get the Patriots off the front pages of the sports section.

The team needed this. DD has proven savvy at pulling off big moves but not so much at building the franchise for the future. You guys need someone to quickly revamp the organization to catch up with the scouting and analytics departments of the other top teams.

Dave knew his payroll margin of error was razor thin and he threw whatever he had at WS stars who were major risks. He’s paying for those choices.

Who would want this job? Deliver a WS. Have an off year with incredible financial handcuffs and get fired?
Gee ... who created the financial handcuffs with the Sale and Price extensions?

He did the job he was hired to do -- he pushed all the chips to the middle to win a WS and they did it.

Allowing him to sign Sale a year early was a critical mistake by this team's ownership, and they are essentially punishing him for their own mistake.

As has been outlined in myriad threads, this team is going to have to do some incredibly effective Farhad Zaidi-level bargain-basement shopping to improve next year while remaining under the highest tax threshold, and the job only gets harder if they are somehow able to extend Mookie and JD doesn't opt out (and after he proved beyond a shadow of a doubt this weekend that he is unplayable in the field, opting out would be really dumb). That is not DD's strength, to put it mildly.

All of that said, there is clearly something else behind this timing. I suspect they have been having internal discussions about (i) DD's next deal and (ii) how to improve the team and it's clear that DD is not the right guy for the job, so they are cutting bait now so they can rebuild their FO right away to be prepared for the off-season and get first dibs on the top young GM/Pres of Baseball Ops candidates.

This feels like a bad idea and I can't imagine anybody other than a hungry internal candidate would want to be on that hot seat after DD lasted <365 days after a title and exec of the year campaign.

There are 30 MLB teams and many, many people working around professional baseball (and many more if you include all the hotshot wannabe-GMs that frequent SoSH other Sox-centric internet platforms) who would take a job GM-ing the Marlins or Royals in a Keith Hernandez heartbeat if they got that shot. I don't know that the Sox will hire their next great GM off the back of this move but they will likely have people beating down their door for the seat.

This is a very good MLB job and even with the thin farm system - given the young players under control as well as the team's resources, the elements are there for someone to come in and rebuild on the fly. And then a good chunk of the posters here will be calling for their head a few months into their tenure. Its what we do...

I imagine GM/head of Sox baseball ops is one of the most highly sought after job in all of baseball. There wil be no shortage of very qualified candidates

He came in and did his job: won a title. The job now (partial rebuilding, restocking farm system) is not the job he was hired for, and it's not a job that he's done well in his career. This is IMO the correct move.
