Day 5 GAME THREAD: Some minor CONCACAF THUNDER

These games don't knock your socks off, which means they'll probably end up being pretty good.

We start off with Sweden against Son Hueng-min. I mean South Korea.

This game is interesting due to the Mexico-Germany result. If one of these teams snags the 3 points, Germany is looking up at 2 teams, which should pay dividends for the viewers later this week.

Belgium vs. Panama (CONCACAF THUNDER!!). This one could get ugly, as US fans contemplate what might have been. But alas, it's Panama, not us, and they face a tall order. I know we have at least one Panamanian here, so good luck friend.

We end the day with Tunisia vs. England. As a Tottenham fan, I should be rooting for England, but man, the entertainment value of a bad English showing here is off the charts. I mean, could we get a hat trick for Kane, Dele Alli doing Dele Alli stuff and then a heartbreaking late goal for Tunisia?

This is one of those games I'll just have to see where it leads to see what I really want.

I'm really excited at the prospect of someone outside of CONCACAF being on the receiving end of the Blas Perez Experience on the world's biggest stage.

The entire country is a wreck.

My youngest's school is showing the game on a huge screen in the auditorium (pretty sure almost all schools are doing something similar).

I'm watching at work.

But all that aside, we know how outclassed we are. You never know though.

Someone hold me.

Sweden and South Korea are similar squads. Both teams will try to play defensively and avoid making mistakes on defense. Both teams are led by two top-flight midfielders who will have to play very well for their teams to advance. It's going to come down to the creativity of Son or Forsberg to break down the defense and create opportunity. Sweden is one of the tallest teams in the tournament and South Korea is one of the shortest, so I suspect Sweden will have Forsberg try and carry the ball down the wing and find the head of Marcus Berg or Ola Toivonen.

Boyata has to be the target...Alderwiereld runs a little hot, but he’s too veteran for that nonsense. Read someone joking that Perez will red card out in 10 minutes because he’s never had VAR on his ass.

Most countries don't have 3 month-long summer vacations like the US. For example, in the UK, summer vacation is 6 weeks, from mid-July until beginning of September.

Do you think that Fox hired Hiddink to make Lalas look better by comparison?

You’re forgetting the 6’ 6” Shin-Wook!

I married into a Korean family, so today is a BIG DEAL. My father-in-law and brother-in-law went to Korea-Spain in Dallas back in 1994. They reminisce about that 2 or 3 times a year, and just about daily recently.

I agree with your assessment - both teams are going to want to sit deep and invite the other in so as to hit on the counter. It will be interesting to see how free Korea allow Son at the start; their attack plan is largely to get Son in space and let him run at people. But if he’s asked to defend deep, then Korea will have to rely on Shin-Wook’s hold up play, which is not a strength.

A early goal will help the quality of the game, otherwise I expect a boring affair interspersed with a few frantic counters for good measure.

Korea 1-0 Sweden. Family first!

Anyone ever see Lee Seung-Woo play? According to Wikipedia, he came up through La Masia before transferring to Verona.

Korea looking kind of threatening in possession, but they are counter pressing really well.

Ooohhh, Sweden with a teal opportunity here.

Have to watch the fouls and emotion here, starting to pile up a bit. Unfortunately, having a. CONCACAF crew does not inspire confidence.

Son finally gets free, tactical foul...and no yellow. Ref is not going to maintain control this way. Already 19 fouls in 32 minutes.

Korea bailed out by some great last ditch defending. Sweden making good use of the ball near the box. Both sides have been lacking any kind of build up.

Announcers are really discounting the power of Andreas Granqivst; he is Sweden's best player.

Looks like a penalty to me but I'm biased.
Think it could have gone either way, but I’m biased. This ref is all over the place, though.

And now all I can picture is Hubie Brown.

At the very least isn't that the perfect opportunity for VAR? Or does going to VAR mean the play was already overturned?

Officiating can truly dictate the style of play we see. Inconsistency from match to match is one source of madness, but differences in the application of the laws in different areas of the pitch just throws it all out the window. This is a free for all.

The all CONCACAF crew has already turned this into a very physical game. I hope it doesn’t devolve into a full on CONCACAF brawl. Hard to imagine with these two teams, but anything is possible, I suppose.

Haven’t seen him, but he hasn’t developed that quickly. Barca snapped him up after Lee won the golden boot at a youth tournament. He only made 14 appearances for Verona, scored once (against Milan!), but Verona was relegated. Serie B might be a good level for him next season because, as a 21 year old, he really needs to play 35+ matches to get back on track.

Ugly ugly. Sweden looks most likely to break through, but Jo has been MotM so far.

Edit: If Jo saves this, he really will be MotM.

I wonder what would've happened if Korea had gone down the field and scored before the VAR replay kicked in.

If Sweden win here and then Mexico beats Korea in their next match the Sweden - Germany match would be very interesting. A Sweden win would knock Germany out for sure, a draw and Germany would be effectively out because Mexico and Sweden could engineer a draw in their final match to both advance.

Two things:

This is the first time I'm listening to the Fox announcers. This pair is pretty terrible. Cobi Jones (hallowed be his name) and other dude.

I consider myself a huge fan of instant replay in most sports, but I really dislike how it's been used here to award penalties for things that were never penalties before.

Glenn Davis and Cobi Jones have been mailing it in all tourney, they've done zero research on any of the teams/players as far as I can tell.

Glenn Davis just come off as really pissed that he’s not in the stadium, and having to do the match from the States. Can’t say I blame him.

Koreans may as well short kick their corners, cuz they’re not winning any balls in th box.
They've been launching balls into the box all game, no idea why.

Lee Seung-Woo looks like he'd be useful for moving the ball around in the attacking third.

One of my early highlights of the World Cup: Ally McCoist (on ITV in the UK) referencing Nizhny Novgorod's famous son Maxim Gorky just now as a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize for Literature and naming the titles of several of his most popular works, and Jon Champion responding by saying, "The thing I like about you is how you wear your knowledge and your research so lightly."

I gave an audible gasp of anguish for that poor guy who missed the header.

I don’t usually feel so viscerally about a missed shot from a guy I don’t know who he is. But that was brutal.

Monster game from Granqivst.

0-0 draws are something of a Swedish specialty so a scenario exists where that penalty kick may be the only goal they need to score to advance to the KO round.
