I heard last night (forgive me if it's in this thread, I did scroll through) that Ortiz now has more HRs than anyone in their final season. There's simply never been anything quite like this.

La Mancha.
For those who watched the NESN broadcast last night this is a rehash but Yahoo posted a story up on the Ortiz back and forth with a fan last night after he just missed a HR and then after his next AB.
Ha, I was at the game last night, but I didn't see his interactions with he fan. Unless they play a post-season game in BAL it was the last time I'll ever watch him bat in person, so I was definitely focused on each of his ABs. I thought the first one was going to be gone, but the second was a crushed fly ball.

edit: looking at the HR-tracker data, it was a 406' HR with an apex of 109' - so an impressive fly ball, but not as towering as I remember. Still good stuff, though, especially as all of us Red Sox fans stood, high-fived, and cheered louder than the O's fans' boos.

Anyway, I vote Bolt.
You saying Bobby Orr ain't 'murrican? Then you're you a communist, terrorist, Obama lover, wank fan and likely a pedophile.

Also, while I understand the clamoring for Papi to keep playing, the man himself has spoken and he's now giving us the gift of witnessing transcendental excellence one last time, sharpened by the knowledge that it's his last. Enjoy it.

Plus, he's a great 'murrican.

Lolz, I think I am actually 80% of those things, since voting Obama basically covers the first three, and lusting after Alycia Debnam-Carey from Fear the Walking Dead (less than half my age) covers the fifth. (Wank fan, never -- them's fighting words).

By way of a semi-on-topic point: Big Papi currently leads all major leaguers in OPS by 44 points (Ortiz 1.037, Trout .993, Murphy .987).

It pains me to say this, but at MOST, we have 30 more games of David Ortiz playing for the Boston Red Sox (10 regular season, 1 wild card, 5 game divisional series, 7 game ALCS, 7 game World Series).

Of course I expect it to be far less, as I think he sits a couple of these regular season games, hopefully they don't have to play the wild card game, and it's unlikely that they play the maximum number of games in three straight playoff series.

To think: When Ortiz entered the major leagues, we had just started the second term of Bill Clinton.

I could see them selecting Colin Kaepernick for his off the field social issues and raising public awareness. Not saying that I would agree with that selection but I could see the line of thinking for Sportsman of the Year. They also like to select Olympians. So as Lee Corso says....Not so fast my buddy!!

Not to be too wonkish but there is a possibility of more than 30 if they're in a tie for the division or last wild card spot (including the possibility of a couple more if it's a multi-team tie)

So, why doesn't Ortiz get a double there in the 7th?

He arrived at second before the tag and was called safe. On review, there was no doubt that he arrived safely, but was called out because he came off the bag. Why isn't that a double?

(The obvious answer - he was going to second and was out - just seems wrong here.)

That's my take on it as well. It's a double and then he came off the base. No different than rounding a base and getting caught going back. I assume there will be plenty of people working on Papi's behalf trying to get that changed.

It's an interesting question. For instance, if he beats the throw to the bag, then gets up and starts running toward third, and the fielder chases him and tags him as he runs, is that still just a single? If not, what exactly constitutes the difference? Is the argument that he doesn't have "control" of second base until he stands up from his slide safely?

From the official scoring rules (p 111-112):
9.06(c) When the batter attempts to make a two-base hit or a three-base hit by sliding, he must hold the last base to which he advances. If a batter-runner overslides and is tagged out before getting back to the base safely, he shall be credited with only as many bases as he attained safely. If a batter-runner overslides second base and is tagged out, the official scorer shall credited him with a one-base hit; if the batter-runner overslides third base and is tagged out, the official scorer shall credit him with a two-base hit.
Rule 9.06(c) Comment: If the batter-runner overruns second or third base and is tagged out trying to return, the official scorer shall credit the batter-runner with the last base he touched. If a batter-runner runs past second base after reaching that base on his feet, attempts to return and is tagged out, the official scorer shall credit the batter with a two-base hit. If a batter-runner runs past third base after reaching that base on his feet, attempts to return and is tagged out, the official scorer shall credit the batter with a three-base hit.

That's totally reasonable. The slide is a messy event that needs to be fully completed before anything is scored. You wouldn't credit a stolen base on that same maneuver; why would it be worth a double?

Well, I would credit a SB in the analogous situation if it were up to me to decide.

But, whatever, it's the rule. And a totally academic concern anyway.

Probably because they had 'Yaz Day' on the penultimate game of the season. I went to his last game which was the next day. Even then they figured out how to milk an extra dollar out of the whole business!
Yeah. I was at "Yaz Day" where they gave out the ugliest fucking commemorate poster in the history of mankind...I still have 2 of them in a box somewhere.

Reid Nichols made a nice throw and I thought he was going to be a superstar. Kids are stupid.

In the last 15 games Papi has a slash of: .368/.438/.745/1.183

In the last 7: .393/.469/.750/1.219

I said in this thread back in May that I know it's irrational, but I truly believe he will simply play out of his mind and will this team to a championship this year.

Sure looks like that's exactly what he's doing.

Can't wait for playoff Papi!

I dont know, man. You (we) got 13 glorious years of this guy. Some clickbait article can't take that away, and we know he's not an asshole. He's human, thats whats so great about him.

I mean, we want Yankee fans to like him? Every last one of them is a fucking idiot. Lap up those bitter tears.

One of the great things about Ortiz for me is that he was/ is so transcendently great theres nothing anyone can say about him that will bother me. Pedro too. It was just such a great experience to be a fan of his it is laughable some dopey blogger thinks he can puncture that somehow.

David has received positive reaction from all the cities that have held these small ceremonies right up till now. Even more revealing is the love all the opposing players have shown. If the Yankee fans want to be dicks about this, so be it. It just verifies what we all thought of the majority of them anyway.

"Oh, I'm soo edgy and controversial!" click-bait at it's finest.

Cue "Who the hell is [strike]Karim Garcia[/strike] Anthony Fisher."
Except there's not even a there there. The only thing of (questionable) substance it raises is the PED stuff, which isn't exactly news; that's already baked into everyone's opinions on Ortiz.

Aside from that, he flips his bat after homeruns and he's really intense on the field. There's nothing there to back up him being a jerk even if you accept it all at face value. Nothing even borderline edgy.

I think the fact that almost every single actual major league baseball player seems to hold him in pretty high regard says more about him than any contrarian, clickbait shit thrown against any wall.

Really, the worst thing there is the phone-bashing. And yeah, that was a thoroughly jerky thing to do. Immature, stupid, and possibly dangerous to bystanders. Which is why Pedroia immediately and publicly got in his face about it. But if that's the best you've got--a guy losing his shit on a piece of technology, once--that's a pretty weak case for overall jerkdom.

Big Papi showing Derek, ARod, Texeira, Mariano, Bernie, Jorge and Andy how to go out in style, has to be bothering them.

Look at the fact he requested that the Rays cancel his pre game ceremony yesterday to instead have a moment to honor the life of Jose Fernandez and his reaction during that. That's the man he is, beloved by everyone in MLB. Screw that clickbait BS.

I expect the Yankees to do it with class this week. The fans have generally been great to Ortiz there.
Agreed. Given the NY's current predicament, it wouldn't surprise me to see icons of recent good times, like Jeter, Rivera and Posada involved somehow. The NY's are all about that history.

Maybe they'll trot out Teix and have dueling ceremonies.

Can you imagine how shitty it will be tonight for a Yankees fan to have the Ortiz thing, and then clinching on their field?
This may be one of the more vocal Boston crowds in recent Yankee Stadium history.
