I think the Sale contract ends up working out. Players have off years. It happens. Dombrowski constructed a flawed roster this year and its come back to bite them. Team looks like its quit since the Sox stood pat.

Hindsight is 20/20 but he appears to have handcuffed the team for the next several years with bad contracts for Sale and Eovaldi in addition to hurting the farm system with trades.
This is the cost for an organization that tries to compete every season that develops zero starting pitching. That's not really on Dombrowski, yet, we can judge that in a few years, but because he can only fill the rotation by either spending money or trading from the farm and there aren't tons of options to choose from. I am optimistic both contracts will look better in a few years.

Wasn't the criticism of the Sale extension that there was no rush to do it? The cost made a lot of sense and seemed like a nice deal, but his health was so questionable that it was risky.

New CBA coming after 2021 season could make significant changes to how much they're willing to spend, I wouldn't expect the MLBPA to agree to something like the current luxury tax penalties considering how free agency has been going since they agreed to the current CBA.

Serious question -- was his health that much of a question before he had some issues in the 2nd half of last season? He seemed to be as good as any high-level pitcher at hitting 30 starts / 200 innings, aside from that slightly abbreviated 2014. I know there was talk of him falling off performance-wise in the latter half of his seasons, but even that fall-off still represented a pretty damn good pitcher if I'm remembering correctly.

Of course, he went out and got injured last year and then they extended him. They probably could have waited on that to see if he bounced back. But I'm assuming it came off as a blip for an otherwise pretty consistent pitcher.

OK, just an idea which will hopefully never come to pass. If Sale continues along his present course as a starter and we are stuck with him for another four years because of the contract, does anyone think he could be become a reliever like Andrew Miller was in his prime? It could redeem some of the value of a contract which is beginning to seem like an albatross at this point.
Only if he reinvents himself as a submariner with a screwball.
