Hearing from people who'd know former Butler coach Brad Stevens is gonna be announced as the new IU coach as soon as today... thus completing a circle started a few yrs ago when former Hoosier star Damon Bailey randomly walked into a 2-on-2 game in Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse.

i

isn’t Dave buddies with Bill Simmons?

edit: looks like he is an IU Alumni as well.

He'd be a quitter if he left now. An even more massively-rich quitter, and maybe a happier one, but a quitter nonetheless.

I'd believe it if Stevens lost the locker room or the confidence of Boston's young stars and the Celtics are considering moving on from him.

So no, I don't believe it.

This franchise is in serious trouble if we lose Stevens to Indiana. He isn't even close to the top of my list of why this team is struggling.

Brad Stevens, who signed a contract extension (checks notes) 7 months ago, for $22mm, will be leaving the Celtics mid-season to join the (checks notes) 7-12 Indiana Hoosiers, who are done playing basketball until Q4, leaving one of the best young cores in the NBA to rebuild a college team. This is being reported by a reputable analyst covering... football... who is best known for... being a comedy writer and "performer" on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Right.

At present, this should be considered about as serious as the critiques of Stevens interactions with the referees. That said, this would be a pretty big loss for the franchise. He isn't perfect but the guy is excellent at getting players to max out their abilities.

Dave Dameshek "breaking" basketball news is probably as reliable as Craig Carton "breaking" NFL TV deal news.
Dameshek has exactly as much to lose by putting something like this out there as Craig Carton does. Cousin Sal would be more credible.

Doesn't Dameshek run in the same crowd as Simmons? It seems very unlikely Simmons would've been silent about this (he hasn't said anything on Twitter AFAICT) if it were real.

My hot take is I don't really care either way because NBA coaches barely matter outside of managing personalities and Stevens has shown no particular skill or weakness in that area outside of not being able to corral a space cadet, for which nobody should fault him.

Some guys are obviously a tire fire and are the coaching equivalent of trying to fit into their dad's borrowed suit, so basically you just want to make sure you avoid those guys and get a guy who is fine overall and could handle elite talent.

Edit: All that said, college coaches don't go back to college after successful NBA stints, which Stevens' run surely has been. For what—to go schlep around the country all year courting high school recruits? Nah.

Rick Pitino is not walking through that door.
It's crazy to me that it has been nearly twice as long since the Celtics traded KG and PP to the Nets as it was between Larry Bird retiring and Pitino making that comment.

I actually appreciate Dameshek's brand of humor. He likes to use old, half-forgotten turns of phrase. But he worked for the NFL and his NFL takes were terrible. So I imagine his NBA takes are worse. Perhaps an IU booster fed him hopes and wishes.

This all started with Mark Titus outright admitting that he’s trying to speak it into existence. Assuming Brad stays, it just shows how easy it is to get folks on social media riled up.

Stevens went on the radio this week and denied all reports connecting him to Indiana. This is bogus.
Isn’t that often the lead up to it? There is also the chance that they were still negotiating so he never had an offer in which case he can’t say yes or no at the time.
