Danny Etling QB from LSU pick #219

Combine:
6'3", 222 lbs, 31" arms, 9 3/8" hands
4.76 40, 30.5" vertical jump, 114" broad jump, 7.09 3 cone, 4.37 short shuttle

Etling has decent size and an NFL arm, but his mechanical inconsistencies -- often brought on by impending pressure, are big concerns moving forward. Etling will have to prove he can improve his poise in the pocket as well as his ability to win with his progressions and decision-making after the snap. Etling may find an invite into camp, but will face long odds in making a roster.

Sporadic accuracy and frantic against pressure. Occasional deep-ball dime but overall his accuracy and timing downfield is worrisome. Some mobility. Good, not great arm. UDFA-type.
'17 vs. Texas A&M

'17 vs. Auburn (poor quality)

'17 vs. Florida (against Duke Dawson, #56 pick)

He’s been working with Tom House, who’s Brady’s throwing coach.

Underperformed at LSU (and Purdue), but I like the pick, low cost. Recruited by Iowa (BB connection) in addition to Purdue.

He is good, especially at long passes, when given time. But true, he's bad under pressure. But he's much more mobile than Brady is or was.

I thought this quote from Mike Reiss was particularly interesting. After all the Lauletta talk, Etling had at least as a high of a grade on their board as Lauletta.

So Etling, who will sign a four-year contract through 2021, is a notable part of the discussion. The Patriots viewed him as favorably, if not more, as any of the quarterbacks who were selected on the third day of the draft (Kyle Lauletta, Mike White, Luke Falk, Tanner Lee, Alex McGough and Logan Woodside).

La Mancha.
Any info on his release time?

I'm not in any shape or form a scout, and only watched a few minutes of the vs A&M video posted above, but it seemed to me that he has a strange, compact, throwing mechanic. If that means he can generate good ball velocity while having a quick release time, that's good - but, again, I really don't know much about this stuff. Scouty-type people please correct me.

Will defer to the pylon guys, but this was my main takeaway from macho's scouting notes above:

Year 1 Projection: Outside shot at a late round pick, likely a UDFA who earns a training camp invitation. Can stick around as a practice player.

Year 3 Projection: Could develop into a lower-tier backup.

Scheme Fit: Projects best to a run-heavy, West Coast offense.

As @DrewDawg noted he has worked with Tom House this off-season to fix his release. He was compensating from injuries and realized after the season that that compensation was leading to poor mechanics and accuracy.

You have to imagine the Patriots' evaluation is a little bit rosier or they wouldn't have drafted him ... but not a lot rosier or they wouldn't have waited until the seventh round.

I kinda think this is implied by them drafting Etling. They had plenty of chances to draft Lauletta and clearly weren't that interested. They had the 105th pick and traded back to 114, for which they only picked up pick 178. Lauletta went 108.
