I didn’t know who Luke Kornet is. Apparently, he’s 7’2” and shoots 75% from two and 26% from three. Unfortunately, he takes only .3 shots from two per game and 1.8 shots from three.

He’a the rare NBA barely made the league player whose father was a barely made the league player, Frank Kornet. So he’s second Kornet.
He's the all-time leader in NCAA history for three pointers made by a 7 footer, with 150.

Seriously.

So it looks like the Wiz/Bulls trade ended up being the Wiz/Bulls/Cs trade.

Kornet is big so there's that.

Did the Celtics trade Theis to give more playing time to Tristan Thompson? What am I missing.
They did it to get under the tax and because it cost nothing. They likely felt they wouldn't re-sign him, and they'd rather keep TT's salary for offseason use.

They traded Theis to get under the tax, to give more time to TL, and because Theis can't bang with big guys in a few matchups as well as TT.

Trading TT instead of Theis also removes a lot of salary matching options in the summer.

This trade was about everything except relative performance of TT and Theis.
Fair enough I don't really buy that Thompson has matchup value over Theis (even against big matchups), but I get there's salary matching value to his contract. Fairly frustrating outcome here.

Wagner's ~80% FT is a possible work-around for Hack-a-Williams (62%) and Hack-a-Thompson (60%) in the appropriate late game situation.

Does anyone think this means Williams starts? I predict it's still Thompson (when he returns).

(BTW, Celtics have won 1 of 6 games since TT has been out...after winning 5 of 6 games leading up to his absence)

Not really sure why Chicago even wants Theis if they are worried about Vuc/Lauri. But Vuc does need a backup.

I think the major reason for keeping Thompson over Theis is the contract length. Theis is an FA at the end of the year and I think he was as good as gone.
Thompson has another year left so there’s certainty with him

I believe TT has a player option

A Kemba/Fournier/Tatum/Brown lineup works better with TT or TL than Theis. I would rather have the considerably better offensive rebounding the former 2 provide.

There are maybe some Smart lineups that would work better with a 5 who can space the floor but there's always Wagner.

I also think it's a case that it's pretty easy to find someone who'll take on $5M for bird rights at the last minute, harder when you're getting over $9M.

Though from a lineup perspective, I think they want to play smaller more, and Theis' rebounding issues were concerning.

Bottom line is that the team needed Fournier and the salary slots more than it needed Theis.

Theis is better than Wagner and they got 1.5 million dollars in cash. Seems like a no brainer for them even if Theis doesn't play a minute
Yeah, easy decision for the Bulls. Kind of a no-brainer trade for both teams given the tax for the Celtics.

I'm not a big Wagner fan and at 6'11" he sadly has an even worse rebound rate than Theis.

On the bright side, he is young, not too terrible on D, and seemingly has room for growth as a 3pt shooter.

His shooting has been a bit of an odd combination as a supposed stretch big.
Career:
FG: 50%
FT: 81%
3PT: 30%

College 3 Pt career 39%.

Feels like he should be a better shooter than he is. Maybe he will figure it out, even if it's not on the Celtics.

Also, the Cs were getting killed at the rim. I don't know if Wagner solves it but something had to be tried.

Ibaka got an option in LA, and that's one reason I liked the TT signing better.
But isn't the option in the team's favor? :drums:

Staying under the tax this year makes it much easier to pay whatever combo of Fournier Smart and Williams they're interested in keeping long term over the next 2 offseasons, since they're already guaranteed to be over the tax next year.

From what I read on the interwebs, Moritz is 6'11.5 with a 7'0 wingspan and a 9'0 standing reach. Those are some awful measurements. And I know, they aren't everything.

I'll miss Theis.

I won't miss how he literally got whistled for everything but breathing on the other team.
When they called the foul on Gianis and not Theis last game I worried about the very fabric of time and space.
I will miss him. He was a real warrior and made the most of his ability. He was so close to being the stretch guy they need.

To add, he also has elite hand width. I don't know if that's a valuable thing or not.

Ditto on the sentiment re Theis. He played with his head and heart but he was just too damn small to be a #5 and his 3-ball was almost good enough. He always played hard and never got a call. No respect no respect at all.

Presumably, this also means there was nothing to the story about TT violating covid protocols because I can't imagine they'd have been comfortable going forward with him and TL as the only proven centers if that were the case

Damn, DT lives in my neighborhood. We even nod to each other when walking our dogs, so bummed to be losing a friend like that.
Theis lived in Needham? Where? I lived for two years on Grant Street right behind the hospital.

I'll miss Theis, who was a real hard worker who got the most out of his ability and was a key player on some fun teams. I get getting under the tax this season though. Oh well.

I'll miss Theis too. I had a lot of respect for his attitude, his demeanor, his effort and his shot (except for last night's game-ending clunker, of course.)

What's the O/U on number of games Theis plays for the Bulls before Billy Donovan gets tossed for arguing a call against Theis? I'm saying 10.

Theis got more bad whistles than any player I can remember in the NBA. It was comical at times how much he got screwed.

I'm a Theis fan, but I'm also a fan of the moves today, so no hard feelings here, just a few mixed emotions.

Right on target to me.

I wonder if Team Theis talks to Boston before he signs anything somewhere else. They do like him, IMO.

Edit: To be clear, not likes him as in amazing player, but good team guy, works on his game, etc.

Here's a scary thought: while there is no guarantee the Cs make a deep playoff run, they have no chance if TL can't remain healthy.

I hope Cs medical staff are up for the challenge.

I think you missed a subtle fan service callback to one of SoSH's epic arguments dating back to one David Price.
Was it Price? I couldn’t remember who, but i thought it went back further than that for some reason.

I wonder if there is still some SoSH contingent which adamantly believes a player option is beneficial for the team.

He's physically almost a dead ringer for Kelly Olynyk, but with a bigger wingspan and better vertical

Edit- basically the same height, reach, weight, lane agility, 3/4 sprint. They're twins
