Good thing the NFL is letting 70k people in the stands what’s going on while they watch the teams clean up the benches. Just announce its done for tonight and go home and updates will be coming.
This is really not an every possible scenario kind of thing. It's not like we had a roaming volcano. Someone possibly dying on the field has to be planned around.
That's a really interesting possibility and while super, super rare MAY be statistically more likely due to a blunt chest injury causing a primary cardiac injury. That could cause tamponade. Damaged/torn muscle, intact pericardium. Hope not, much, much harder to treat - have to crack his chest. Had a case 2 years ago of blunt atrial rupture after a car accident. Tamponade, classic signs. Thought of needling his pericardium (would have killed him outright - I have nightmares) but bedside ultrasound showed an atrial clot (which saved his life). Went to OR and cardiothoracic surgeon (who happened to be there for another case - a miracle) repaired his atrial tear - went home 5 days later. Gnarly.

Pulmonary vascular injury (Bledsoe)
Cardiac dysthymia unrelated to trauma (I haven't seen play)
Tension pneumothorax
Just horrible. Hoping for a great save.
They likely need to get stadium personnel in position to help exit the crowd. Parking, gates, etc. they’re wildly off schedule, obviously.
No I think exactly the opposite. The timing makes it clear that nobody at ESPN has thought through how they would handle an incident like this, which is pretty shocking for how much money they’ve put into the rights. It’s disgusting and disrespectful.
I’ll ask again, what should they be doing differently? It’s a developing situation and they are doing the news piece of the network.
My guess is they suspend and resume tomorrow.
Upthread someone linked to a good story about the Muamba situation, that was also a long time in the ambulance. Basically one of the things is that you can do a lot of stuff in the ambulance, and don't want to be moving while you do it. Once you've done all the same things you'd be doing either way, you drive to the best hospital for the job.
Isn't Schefter an odd choice to have on as one of the three commentators? He's like one of the most tone deaf people out there.
If this is intentional to let the teams clear out, I think it's reasonable to hold off announcing to the fans.

They probably don’t have anybody else at ESPN at 10 pm with proper gravitas on a Monday night.
Let Joe Buck send it to alternate programming and run a ticker announcing that greater detail will be shared as soon as it is received.
I’m not a doctor, and I didn’t stay at holiday inn express last night, but generally with a serious trauma the EMTs are in radio communication with the hospital regarding what to do. And at an NFL game, there’s already doctors there. So even if the prognosis was very bad, I doubt they would say, eh we’re just gonna call it here and not hurry. It’s more likely a decision was made with and by doctors that he could receive better care stationary in the ambulance than hauling ass to the hospital.
If you extrapolate it to every sport in every league that’s played, I come to the exact opposite conclusion.
Ambulance didn't leave the field until 30 minutes after the incident. No idea how long after they actually left for the hospital. It's possible paramedics may have had to administer more care in the parking lot.
Going home tonight was obvious from basically the minute cpr got administered. Those players were shattered and Hankins life is in peril. Whether to resume/cancel/call it a tie/etc is a much harder question-but not one thst needs to be answered tonight
It's definitely happened more than that, I can think of 3 or 4 soccer matches that have had this happen before off the top of my head, at least 1 or 2 basketball (college).
I don't know what you prepare for it though, other than suspending the game and re-scheduling which it looks like they'll do.
I would presume that if they choose to continue at a later date then they will pick up where it was paused.

They may have made the decision to suspend a while before they announced it publicly in order to prep stadium personnel, etc.
Yes, exactly. I was pretty surprised that some people here were suggesting that we should wait and see and maybe the players will want to finish the game. The logistics of what to do about the game going forward are kind of irrelevant at the moment.
It’s the least of it, but I am struck by how good Booger and Kolber have been and how out of his depth Schefter seems. I’m sure this is completely unfair, and obviously trivial compared to everything else that is happening.
It happens infrequently is the point. It’s a developing situation that they should be reporting on and are best equipped to provide updates, which everyone wants - hence this thread. And they have to do some tap dancing in between as they learn new info.
From a coverage standpoint this is like the 1989 WS earthquake when Al Michaels turned into a news reporter on scene with Ted Koppell anchoring from the studio.
Everything I saw was handled with the right amount of gravitas. Both announcers and studio people.
They've got to be incredibly shaken. They did well.
Yeah, for once I can’t actually fault ESPN’s coverage. I think they done as well as could be expected.
so a sports news and information provider should just bail when there’s a news story like this and not cover it? I disagree. No one has to watch this, but it seems worth covering
