Dalton Jones name recently came up in a recent bar discussion. I remembered that he had a real good Sept. in 1967. I decided to look up his stats using Retrosheet.org play by play feature.
I was shocked how productive he was the last 6 weeks of the 67 season.
He batted .407 (24 for 59) from Aug 19th thru the end of the regular season. While he batted .346 with runners in scoring position for the entire year. The last 6 weeks he batted in incredible .611 (11 for 18) . He had 14 rbis in the 59 at bats.
Highlights
8/19 6th inning pinch hit single leadoff single leads to 2 runs . Sox losing 6-5 at the time . Sox win 12-11

8/20 Jones enters game in the 5th inning Sox losing 8-1 at the time. Singles in the 5th inning and scores on a Yaz 3 run homer (8-4 Angles) . An inning later doubles with the bases loaded making it 8-6 Angles . Scores tying run on an Adair single. Sox win on Adair homer 9-8

8/22 breaks scoreless game with a 2 run triple in the 7th inning. Sox win 2-1.

9/4 Sox losing 4-2 to the Senators in the 6th inning. Jones has an rbi single in a 4 run inning. Sox win 6-4

9/18 He has an rbi single in a 3 run 1st inning. He goes 4 for 5 with game winning 10 inning Home Run against the Tigers

9/21 Sox leading 1-0 when Jones has a bases loaded single which made it 3-0. Sox hang on to 6-5 win against the Indians

9/24 Jones goes 4 for 6 against the Orioles with 5 rbis . Sox win 11-7 Home Run shy of cycle

9/30 Sox losing 1-0 to the Twins .Pinch hit single in the 5th inning. Sox score 2 runs in inning. Sox win 6-4

10/1 Jones singles in 5 run 6th inning. Sox win pennant 5-3.

He went on to hit .389 in the World Series. .600 when not facing Bob Gibson.
Big single in game 2 before a Yaz 3 run homer . Started a 4 run rally in the bottom 7th inning of game with a pinch hit single after the Cards had tied the game on a Lou Brock 2 run homer earlier in the inning.

This was the second game of a doubleheader. I think Dick Williams was starting to wave the white flag .The score being 8-1 Williams decided to give some of the starters a break. He replaced Rico Pertrocelli after plate appearance in the fifth inning. Adair moved from 3rd to short and Jones came in to play 3rd. Turned out to be quite a move.

Remember the home run vs the Tigers...same game that Yaz tied it up with a homer in the 9th.

Different times. The bottom of the 10th (1-2-3) was pitched by Jose Santiago, a starter. Unless he was at that point in Williams' rather large doghouse and not in the rotation (he ended up back in it by the end of the season, as we all know).

Surprisingly Jose Santiago only started 11 games in 1967. Gary Waslewski started 8 games in 67. They started 3 games in the World Series. Some rotation!

Williams platooned a lot, particularly after July. A lot of times it would be Dalton at third and Adair at 2nd. The other days it would be Foy at third and Andrews at 2nd. I assume it was Jones facing righties and Foy against lefties.
