"My thought process was," Scott told Outsports in his first interview on the subject, "is that there's a story about my career and how I got started in umpiring and they're talking to people I have known since junior high and it didn't seem right to have a whole story and pictures without a picture of Mike and I, someone who's been with me through this entire process. We met the October after my first year in the big leagues.

"Obviously, when I sent that picture to Jeff, I knew exactly what it meant. In a small way, this was opening that door in a publication that wasn't going to be circulated nationwide. It could be picked up, but it's not Time magazine. I made that decision to go ahead and do it because I felt it was the right thing to do.
"I realized that it could open a Pandora's Box, but this is not a surprise to Major League Baseball, the people I work for. It's not a surprise to the umpire staff. Until Mike and I got married last November, he was my same-sex domestic partner and had his own MLB I.D. and was on my insurance policy."

Scott comes off as very thoughtful about how he's gone about releasing this information about his life. Good for him

ESPN should send a reporter to see if this is going to be a distraction when he's brushing off the plate.

Good for him. This sort of thing should've never been an issue in the first place.

Every time an active participant in any sport has the courage to make a statement like this, the line moves forward.  I'd like to believe that 5 years from now, this type of story won't be any kind of news at all, but for now, it is a step closer to a future where understanding and acceptance trumps reactionary fear and prejudice.  A tip of the cap to you, sir umpire.

Okay, a decent ump, a crew chief. No big deal. IF a player comes out, get back to me. In the mean time, more barriers come down and that's always good.

Typical example the Ump Show....I kid I kid.

Baseball is an interesting sport. Most of the players are either A) White conservative southerns or B)Heavily Catholic Latin Americans. I'm curious how it would react to a gay athlete.  You have players like Luke Scott. But I don't think most players would care. I don't think fans would care. I'm a bit surprised a hockey player hasn't come out. I think the Hockey players/community being a bunch of white Canadians would be very accepting. And it would be hugely encouraging for shattering stereotypes with hockey probably being the most "masculine" sport.

So you think that next time he yells "You're Out!!" at Luke Scott, Luke will have an inappropriate reaction?

Good for Scott. He was out at home for a long time, glad it's now public.

He's been with his partner for 28 years and is married to him. It sounds like he's been about as out as a person can be for years. The media either didn't know it, or didn't think it was a story until someone at deadspin read last October's issue of Referee magazine.

The article mentioned that his husband has been on Scott's health plan as a domestic partner for a few years now, so certainly people in MLB knew and didn't care whatsoever, and that's the way it should be.

Scott seems happy and comfortable with who he is, which is about all anyone straight or gar could ever hope for. Good for him.

I think it's more likely they didn't know it - I presume sites like Outsports would have covered it, even if the bigger news sites didn't think it was a story.

But really I was just trying to use the phrase "out at home".
