This post got me thinking:

Go download Classic Shell (free) and make the pain go away...it takes a few mins to config (opposite click on the start button and use the advanced setup, but that's because you can configure it to be exactly the way you want as in XP or 7).

How do you customize your desktop, OS or browsers? What tools, apps or extensions are you using?

I'm playing around with Classic Shell and I downloaded Rainmeter to customize my desktop. For extensions, I have an oil/gas price and addblocker. I added powerbot to gmail to integrate Evernote with my gmailo, and I'm going to try out a Gmail panel extension. What do you use? What am I missing?

I downloaded that on your recommendation for my phone a few months back. I never really used it though. Maybe I will look back into it.

Just use the website for integrating good stuff, it is infinitely easier to use than the mobile app

If you're using 2 or more monitors:

Win 8 has good support, 8.1 even allows you to set all important parameters for each monitor separately.

For Win 7 or even XP support for things like multiple launch bars generally comes via addon commercial programs like UltraMon which offer a wealth of options, the problem is I've found most of these programs, even after years of development, have glitches and stability issues. Zbar is a free utility that gets the basics correct, is very stable and does most of what you want, find it here: http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/.

Primary browser I use is Palemoon, a variant of Firefox which is a true 64 bit version which remains conservative and will NOT be devolving into a Chrome clone in the next few months. It's fully compatible with all FF addons and has the added benefit of using it's own profile and setup so you can run it parallel to FF without direct interaction (unlike Waterfox the other 64 bit variant which will subsume any version of FF you have installed since it uses the same profile). Additions I use are:

Adblock Plus
Classic Compact appearance (allows very narrow headers with control of their height, useful on laptops where you want to maximize useable space)
IE View (right click added option to launch any page in IE for pages that are coded very badly)
Image Zoom (zooms any image on any page)
DownloadHelper (about the most versatile for grabbing media off any site)
