Cord Already Cut - Which/How Many Streaming Subs Do You Have and Why?

I thought this topic was specific enough to separate it from the general cord cutting thread. Without getting too specific, I find myself with too many subs costing too much money and I've come full circle to where I am paying as much or more as I did for cable or satellite. Thankfully, MLB TV is free with T-Mobile. Reasons tend to be for access to specific channels like MLB network or Discovery or Golf. But it's too much and we watch OTA network TV probably 80-90% of the time (I get like 70 channels and use the Tablo OTA DVR accessible through my Roku).

I gotta let a few things go. Which subs did you pick or go without and why? What did you decide you could sacrifice after consideration of cost?

At this point, if it's not Google, YTTV or Apple TV I have it. I need to lose some subs. Talk about your experience prioritizing and deciding which subs?

Mention please, if you're comfortable, what you're paying in total monthly fees, Amazon Prime excluded. -Thanks.

I had/have too many.

Thankfully, Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+ are all free thanks to my Verizon Unlimited family plan, but I still pay for:

1. HBO Max
2. Amazon Prime (but more for the free 2-day shippinh)
3. Apple TV (included in a family plan for our Music needs)
4. Peacock (a $5 break because I use the WWE Network for freelance work and now I pay $5 a month instead of $10)
5. Netflix

I've been meaning to get rid of Hulu, but haven't done so yet.

1. Prime (because of the shipping)
2. Netflix
3. Hulu ($5 version)

We use a relative's login for Disney. For live sports I either just follow along on social media or if it is the playoffs and one of my favorite teams is involved then I do a free trial for Sling or YouTube or Hulu or whatever. We actually got rid of our TV recently, so I don't even watch sports with bunny ears. It's been pretty freeing.

I still get cable and probably will be the last of all to give up the cord. Cable and I had many happy years together, it's responsible for my meeting my wife and putting my children through college and paying my current mortgage. That's why I get cranky about theft.

Beyond cable, I also pay for...

1.) HBO, as part of my cable package. That gets me HBOMax for free.
2.) Showtime, as part of my cable package.
3.) Disney+ / ESPN+ / Hulu... thankfully get these for free through work
4.) Netflix
5.) Amazon Prime
6.) MLB (which I could've gotten free through Sprint, but I missed my chance)
7.) Discovery+ (Mrs. Mugsy wanted this one. I'm looking forward to dumping it)
8.) Apple TV+... for free as we're continually buying new Apple devices
9.) Peacock... base version for free via cable

What's missing? Paramount+, Peacock Premium, and any niche services. Use my son's NBC Sports Premium once in a blue moon.

Netflix - Their original stuff is decent and they still keep an OK catalogue of movies and TV shows. They've certainly suffered a lot from Disney and Paramount taking their portfolios to their own services, and I'm not loving the price increases.
Prime - I really like The Expanse and I started watching Bosch recently, so it's pretty safe. Also into some of the British TV it offers, though Britbox is trying to consume all of those. Plus shipping.
Disney+ - Was originally a short-term sub to watch Mandalorian, but fuck if I don't love having all those Disney movies and shows at my fingertips.
Hulu ($5) - Since Drunk History and some other shows went away I'm decreasingly in love with Hulu. It's a bit Netflix light at the moment, in a budget crunch I'd probably kill it first.
(Shared) Max - I don't pay so it's sorta an honorable mention, but I DO love having the Babylon 5 remaster available. If I were looking to swap out one of the services I do pay for, this would be in contention with Paramount.

I've also considered the bundle which combines basic Hulu, ESPN+, and Disney+. If I didn't have MLBTV free through TMO, I'd probably pull the trigger on that one.

1. Netflix - T-Mobile pays for this
2. Hulu - Part of the Hulu/Disney Plus/ESPN+ Package
3. Disney Plus - Same as above
4. ESPN + - Same as above, literally never looked at this
5. Shudder - Obvious reasons
6. Amazon Prime - Byproduct of being a Prime Member
7. Apple TV - Free from buying iPhones, but will probably continue at $4.99
8. MLB.TV - Free with T-Mobile

Amazon Prime (bonus of shipping)
MLB.TV
NHL.TV
ESPN+, Hulu (ad free), Disney + bundle
HBO Max (free with my ATT gig internet)
AppleTV+ (bundled with family plan for music, cloud storage, fitness+....)

OTA antenna with Tivo DVR (paid the one time fee) with one mini receiver (30 or so DTV channels with sub-channels)

3 Apple TV 4K's as streaming "hubs" for TV's

No Paramount+, Discovery+ or Peacock, yet. I expect to start rotating with Netflix and some of these. Not sure I'd have HBOMax if it weren't free with internet. It would be rotation worthy with these others at best.

SiriusXM/Apple Music via Sonos for audio in the house.

6. Apple TV
7. MLB (via TMobile)
8. AT&T TV for live streaming (news and sports for me, the Mrs. watches a bunch of stuff on here)

I cycle through some others temporarily to catch up on some stuff but don't subscribe regularly (Showtime, Shudder, etc.)

I appreciate all the responses. I should have said in the OP, what is your monthly total for all your streaming subs. Amazon Prime can be excluded for the other benefits.

Amazon Prime
HBO Max
Hulu ($2 add on to Spotify)
MLB.TV
NHL.TV
ESPN+
PGA Tour Live

YouTube Music
Sirius XM (Internet Only Plan)
Prime Music (family plan)
Spotify

That's a lot when I write them all out but I somehow managed to only get one service that ends in a +, so that's something. I also still have DirecTV but that's temporary while my wife gets used to YouTube TV.

Amazon Prime - not even sure what that costs
Netflix - 13.99
Hulu - 5.99
Spotify - 14.99

I listen to the Sox on the radio or can find a link online if I really want to watch them. I'll get Sling ($30/month) when the NHL/NBA playoffs start.

We used to pay well over $200 for cable. And I found myself pretty much just watching local channels anyway. So now we just have an HD antenna that I paid $30 for and that gets me CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX. I don't miss having all the channels at all.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Start with the free apps.

Pluto: tremendous amount of archived shows, albeit with the same ads over and over and over again (@soxhop411 works for them);

Stemium: interface for Locast, which offers all of the live OTA digital channels in 31 markets. Programming times out after 20 minutes so you can either just re-open the app, or pay $5/month to go ad free.

Paid:
Amazon Prime: since it comes with a Prime membership, and we abuse the dickens out of free prime shipping;

Netflix;

Hulu/Spotify: $5/month with an edu email addy.

YouTube TV - We basically treat this as our cable provider after ditching DirecTV last month
Netflix - I can usually find something worth watching if I look for it, but it's mostly because my daughters like their kid shows
MLB.tv - Traded a $4 Amazon GC for someone's T-Mobile access code on Slick Deals
HBO Max - Excellent content
Disney+ - For kids stuff, though I'm beginning to question its value, since the kids typically just watch Netflix
Amazon - 2-day shipping. I honestly wonder what they gain from their Prime service--I don't know anyone who gets Prime for streaming content versus the shipping.
Peacock Premium - Because no one provides a pre-2004 Red Sox nut punch quite like Tottenham Hotspur

In previous years I got the NBA package, but I don't feel like shelling out for both NBA and NHL, and some nights I'd rather watch the Bruins if both are on, so I just go the illicit streaming route.

Great thread, LoweTek.

In my place for a few more weeks, i have a forced below market package at $200 from landlord with internet, full Directtv (save blackouts for major sports), Amazon Prime (for shipping), Hulu, Netflix, AppleTV, and somethign else maybe I can't think of.

I'm taking a break from screentime when I move out for June, and most of May and July, since I had about 10-12 hours every day last 6 months, and 7-8 hours, the 7 months before that. Going to get some vitamin D and eye rest.

But, I plan to return to 7-8 hours after that. And 12-14 for the Olympics.
Will get whatever I can for the Olympics, hope that Peacock+ is enough and/or PEacock by itself is good for most.

I'm in the Lose camp where I'm watching more Netflix than HBO/SHO/EPIX/Starz, so I hope to find Comcast in my new place wherever it is, and have internet plus standard cable and the sports package for under $200

Long term, I hope to either have just Comcast cable and Netflix, because Netflix has the most extensive library (not being a kid, have no use for Disney) and good complement to Cable/ESPN, and ESPN+ (for college sports), and just binge a month or two a year for Hulu, HBO Max (Flight Att, Dragons, etc), and whatever else there is that I need to catch up on. If I am starting to not find a lot of stuff on Netflix, then will just drop that and binge like the others on a rotation.
Doubtful I will ever use Apple TV after my soon to be started year is up (just not enough of a library. I did enjoy Ted LAsso last week on landlord's account, only thing I saw on it)

I got a Roku for when I move out

Short and medium term:
Mid May-Mid-July: Amazon Prime (for shipping), Peacock regular, Pluto, regular Youtube (for 8 minute MLB game highlights) and Apple TV because I have a free year (new Iphone)
Olympics: Above plus Peacockplus and anything else useful for Olympics
End of August-Thanksgiving-ESPN+ for college sports and maybe Netflix and above free ones
Thanksgiving onward: Netflix and above free ones

Finding the 8 minute summaries of NFL and COllege FB games 2 years ago, and now MLB, has been really helpful. I'll be moving in that direction for all non-Olympics, non-World Cup, sports viewing.

Fuck.

We have:

Disney/Hulu/ESPN bundle $13.99
HBO Max $14.99
Netflix $15.99
Amazon Prime ???
Apple TV+ ???
MLB TV $129 (I think)

We also still have DirectTV that historically I have used for the MLB/NBA/NHL/NFL packages — which is like $700 a year I think in total, but I bought just the MLBTV version this year and use that on Apple TV (the app is awesome). Have been considering canceling the DirectTV because we really don’t use it for anything anymore except for sports — which I would get those either way. I think the DirectTV sans the sports packages probably runs me $175 a month between all the TVs and receivers (living room/bedroom/2 kids rooms).

NESN/MLB needs to get on the program and have a $3 or $5 a month standalone streaming sub that is never subject to blackout and shows everything.
The Regional Sports Network fee on a monthly cable bill in Massachusetts is $10.50 per month. They're not going to undercut themselves by offering it for $5 a month.

Right now, just Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Recently cut out Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max. I'll resubscribe to YouTubeTV at some point just to watch Better Call Saul S6, then promptly cancel again.

It's probably NESN, NESN+, and Comcast Sports Net or whatever they call the channel the Celtics are on, but it's not explicitly called out on the bill and compulsory. The regional sports networks get that $10.50 from every single cable subscriber all year long. Letting people split it up would kill their leverage and torpedo their main revenue source.

It’s not like they are liberal in their use of funds

but ok,I’m willing to go $5.25 (honestly, I’m willing to go $10.50 if they made it easy)
Perhaps selling NESN to Red Sox and bruins fans in California or Florida or wherever, can make up for that lack of leverage.

Netflix 15.99?
Amazon (99/12=) 8.25
Hulu + HBO (6+15) 21
Youtube 65
MLB free with T-Mobile
Apple (bought an iPad a year and a half ago, still have access)
Disney+ 799 (just to watch Wanda, need to cancel)
1gb Spectrum internet (and phone) 110 just expired, going up to 130

So that’s almost $250 total going forward, which is around what my ATT cable/internet was when I canceled. Amazon doesn’t really count since we’d have it anyway. Could probably ditch YouTube if I got Discovery+ and could convince my wife she has other options for MSNBC.

I did get Sunday Ticket last season but I’ll be back at the bar on Sundays this fall.

I received the email that Roku may no longer support YTTV and I’m thinking of using this as an excuse to get NESN back through AT&T TV (but it will likely be $15 more a month than I pay). However, I love the YTTV interface and set up. What’s everyone’s experience been with AT&T TV? The channel lineups seem to be fairly similar and I don’t want to pick up any other streaming equipment (I have two Roku’s so I’m all set).

The product for those folks is MLB.tv, which is $20 a month. That raises the question of what one would pay to watch the Red Sox on TV. We have a lot of people in these threads who aren't willing to pay much of anything and switching to YouTube TV. I know I'm an outlier who watches just about every game and would pay $50-$100 a month to do it. I don't think there's any way they could possibly generate the revenue they currently do if they relied on people choosing to subscribe. If cable subscriptions crater, the entire economics of the game will have to change very quickly.

I pay about $25/month, which I get 5% cash back for and share with my nuclear family across the globe:
Spotify Premium, Family plan (~$16/month)
SiriusXM (~$6/month via annual renegotiation)
PS Plus (~$2/month via recurring sales)

Parents pay for:
Netflix
YTTV
PBS Membership
Brother pays for:
HBOMax
Friends pay & allow me to access their accounts for:
Hulu Premium
Amazon Prime
MLB.TV
NESN app via FiOS log-in
Other:
PLEX server maintained by my brother
Kanopy from the local library
So a lot of content & value for $25. I use Spotify at home the most and am a fan of SiriusXM in the car, though I would cancel it if the price went up.

In terms of TV it's almost all about the sports. NESN app for Bruins, YTTV for Celtics, PL, MLB Network, others. I'm not watching much Red Sox this year and will watch the Angels or White Sox on MLB.TV instead. PBS, Jeopardy and Colbert are basically the extent of what I watch with any semi-regularity on YTTV.

Frankly the way I consume digital media has evolved. I don't follow many series and even the ones I do I usually wait until all the episodes in a season are available. The majority of my non-sports TV watching is with friends/family watching a movie or TV show. I think that's driven by the evolution of story telling in video games. If I'm on my own, I'm more inclined to spend 2 hours exploring an immersive 1P world than to go along for the ride on most movies/television. Via PS Plus I get most of the games of interest eventually, and Sony releases a wide range of other games for free on a regular basis. It's a massive amount of media with a wide range of engagement levels to choose from.

Basically, if it weren't for live sports, I'd be fine without any of the video streaming services.

I'm surprised more people aren't sharing services. I pay for my own Netflix, Hulu, & MLB.tv..but I share my MLB.tv with 2 others. We're all fairly low-use users. I split Paramount+ w/ my brother, and access HBO/Showtime and all of the network streaming options via my parents cable login. They are old school live TV-only, so I do not feel guilty using their access that they don't use at all.

Prime: More for shipping, but worth a couple nice shows a year.
Hulu+Disney+Espn bundle. ESPN's gonna have hockey and the marvel/star wars stuff is neat.

I also spend about $50/month on a dozen youtube content creators through Patreon in two major categories: Disc Golf and Science Education. These payments are optional, but I write software for a living and have some extra fun money that I've budgeted because I really like the content they produce.

I have cable and YTTV and use both quite a bit, so I'm happy to have both. I like running multiple screens and while I do have a lot of cable boxes, they are static and cannot be moved. Youtube TV can be moved anywhere.

I also subscribe to basically every streaming service. (the only ones I see in this thread that I don't use are Criterion Channel and Shudder) The world is my oyster. There are awesome shows on every service and movie channel.

The only service I have canceled in recent past(in March) is my Amazon Channel HBO subscription, because I already have HBO on my cable in NYC and in my current home in Ohio. It was extremely redundant. Back in the day, I used it in my office because the interface worked better. I should have canceled this a while ago but just lost track.

Your cable provider doesn't have their own streaming service? As much as I hate Comcast's customer service and pricing, their tech side is actually quite good. They have an app and website that basically mimics your cable box, letting you watch any live TV or DVR content anywhere on anything.

I have Spectrum, which is not available on Fire TV or Roku.(it used to be but they shut the app down this year, in another content pricing fight)

I think it's available on the Xbox and I know it's available on Apple TV, but I don't like either for streaming. And I have TVs everywhere, so just using YouTube TV is easier because then I can add screens where I want. And move them around, if necessary.

Well, per Ars Technica:

"This isn't Roku's first app carriage dispute, and in the past, being removed from Roku has only meant being pulled from the Channel Store. Users who already had the channels installed could continue watching. So if you're a YouTube TV user on Roku and are worried about all this, just make sure the channel is installed, and hopefully you'll be able to ride out all the mudslinging. We'll probably see something happen soon, since Axios writes, 'The carriage agreement between the two companies is set to expire imminently.'"

Don't log out of the app, though.

This happened with Spectrum, as I noted above, and in the time this happened, I moved. For my Roku's, I had the app installed from the store but it was logged into a different account. When I tried to log into the already installed app with my new credentials, it didn't allow me to do it.

So if you have YTTV on the Roku, don't log out and you'll be good to go.

I can’t wait to see @AlNipper49 ’s response.
LOL why so I can crash the server with the streaming services that I have to watch just one or two shows?

I basically have every single one, and they all suck. I have Peacock now, which is basically my Office streaming device. I have Apple, which is my Ted Lasso streaming Device. I have Disney which is my Mandalorian streaming device. I have Netflix which is my Community and Arrested Development streaming device. If I had to keep just one it would be Netflix, because they made Queens Gambit, bought Cobra Kai, American Vandal and Ozark.
