I think it’s very different from the other side of the rivalry, especially for people who remember decades before 2004, but while BOS winning the WS again is clearly the worst possible outcome of any season for Yankee fans, it’s hard to be too bothered while the real world is melting down around us. This Red Sox team was in 4th gear from Opening Day (or the day after) starting off at a ridiculous 17-2 and never really cooling off even when NY passed them for a bit, shifting back down to second gear for September when they had everything clinched and then kicking it into overdrive for the postseason, demolishing two really really good teams and one great one (the Astros). It’s arguable that the Yankees actually played them toughest of the three, and that was with a 16-1 game in there. Amazing amazing season for you guys, extra congrats to @Rasputin who finally got his 100 win season and much much more. John Henry had better make sure Nathan Eovaldi gets paid in the future, one way or another.

As far as how this affects the Yankees going forward, if Hal wasn't giving Cashman a blank checkbook for this offseason before, he had better be now. Even the highest tax level shouldn't be a genuine deterrent if Cashman thinks that is the smartest way to go, they can live with those penalties especially after this year's big international draft class.

They are chanting 'Yankees Suck' now, so funny. They don't suck, they were one of the top 3-4 teams for the second straight year, so if they actually did suck currently, your dominant team would be way less impressive by comparison. There are times that one or both of these two teams actually suck (not often) but 2017 and 2018, no.

You are a class act.
You know we don't say that lightly to a yankee fan.

You're a classy guy, Jon. If all Yankee fans were like you we wouldn't hate them...as much.

You're great, Jon... I think part of this is like when I walk by a Yankees fan in a Red Sox hat they shout 27! in my face. It's a rivalry. I wouldn't overthink it.

Hi Jon. This one was special for me because of so many Sox farmhands that I followed for years playing a key part. I reckon you’ll have the same feeling soon enough. I will not be as graceful as you when that happens.

This rivalry is going be must see tv over the next couple of years. So much young talent, Mookie, Judge, Devers, Torres. Millions will be spent, new villains added (Machado). It’s going to take 100 wins to win the division next year and both teams are set up for a run of championships,

Thanks for your grace, and appreciation as a fan. And I like the Yankees Suck chants....you guys suck even when you're formidable, as you most definitely are. And I agree, I think the Yanks played the Sox the toughest.

The rivalry is back on, and has been fully flipped on it's head. You guys are the underdogs now...gulp.

You do understand it isn’t about the quality of the baseball they offer on the field, right?

That's a great post, Jon. The fans of the Yankees and the fans of the "21st Century Yankees" really have so much in common these days--it's silly for there to be acrimony.

Good post sir, thank you.

My dirty little secret here is, as a middle aged man living in NJ now, and married to a NYY fan, I have a much more moderated view of the Yankees than most Sox fans, and than I did growing up in Boston. I certainly dont root "for" them, i just tend to be pretty meh about them. If it was Dodgers vs Yankees I would have hoped the Dodgers won but it wouldnt have been nearly with the passion of others. And as unpopular as it is to say, i sort of like some of their players. I think judge is a good kid and a unique talent for example.

That being said, I told my wife a couple days ago, if they sign Machado, he will fuel a singular hate that is reminiscent of my youth. Which will probably cause disharmony in my house but I dont care. I hate that guy.

I also think that is something that comes with age. I can't waste time hating a sports team. It's fun to play and beat you guys, but hating a baseball time is kinda immature IMO.

I'm happy for you guys, frankly because of this board I interact with more Sox fans than Yankee fans these days (plus Sox fans I have in my real life.). Kudos. R

Rick Porcello is still overrated though.

And Clay Buchholz stole laptops that one time.

That's all I got.

Yeah, this is me minus some years. Hell, I even stand to co-inherit NYG season tickets. If you like baseball enough and for long enough, it becomes a lot easier to generally be cool about it, especially after the last 14 years. Luckily my father-in-law isn't a dick about it even if he does like to rib me now and then about some things. He texted last night with his bitmoji wearing a Sox hat to say congrats, so that was pretty cool, except that it was in the 8th inning and he was clearly trying to jinx them. I told him as a Red Sox fan it's in my blood to be nervous until the last out, and he said as a Yankees fan it's in his blood to assume the Yankees are going to win even if they are down 10. Of course he did still throw in how many they still need to catch up to the Yanks.

I too am married to a NYYfan, and he really doesn't want his team to sign Machado. Partly because he's a dirty player, but mostly because he doesn't seem to understand how to play as part of a team, always seems to be trying to launch one, and is dismissive of the need to hustle on the bases. (Sorry for furthering the off-topic point, but you are right, hatred will come back into play if the NYY sign that guy.)

Luckily that chant is starting to die and most fans weren't involved. It's a pathetic chant and some fans even tried to break it up. We just won the World Series, and they are chanting about the Yankees, a team not even involved? At least go with "Beat LA" if it's not going to be "Lets Go Redsox."

edit: inferiority complex describes it perfectly.

I hate the chant, too, as it conveys obsession depending on the context of where it is chanted, but no one in their right mind would ever think it's about anything but thinking they are unpleasing to Sox fans.

I mean, if it was "Yankees Stink" would we be having a conversation about how the Yankees are ACTUALLY quite pleasant smelling?

My wife says the same thing. But then when I say, is that why Yankees fans say "Boston sucks" she says, oh definitely not lol.

Well, they haven't played any baseball in a few weeks, so they've had plenty of time to shower and get cleaned up.

Didn't want to click, did click, wish I hadn't clicked.

"Cities have identities and if we can make sure that when people think of Boston (or New England for those Sox fans outside the state), they think “Yankees Suck” instead of all that other stuff, that’s a win."

Seriously? Alrighty.

If the Sox sucked, this would have stung. The Sox were a powerhouse that played like it was impossible to lose and somewhere during the Astros series, my close yankees friends and usually vulgar uncles started saying things like "they're earning this one" "this team just doesn't want to lose." So, yea...absolutely, take this one and enjoy it.

I look forward to the Sox offseason thread.

Hard for me emotionally to keep it together as I'm writing this little note to you, Jon

I could send this via private but I think in the public forum is where it needs to be.

I'm no easy person to deal with when it comes to my Boston fandom - I've been banned from sports talk in my office more than a few times and I am emotionally unbalanced and often a sports driven basket case even when my teams are winning (which as we know, they often do)

Jon is more than just a classy guy. He's a man with backbone and despite being as hard core a Yankee fan as exists, he is able to see clearly realities of situations. He is the same way in his support of other things he believes in.

He is also the reason I'm on this board. He also is one of the people I knew in 2004 that was there for me when very few were. I received a couple of musical packages & attended a concert in NYC in early 2005 that was very VERY important to me when I had no means or ability to be there

I believe we have highest quality Yankee (and baseball) fans posting here as any site on the 'net. They can give as well as they take it. This thread maybe isn't going the way JA anticipated it would but it seems really appropriate.
