I couldn't find a recent thread on this. Thought about putting it in the gaming thread, but there might be other people who are having the same dilemma as I am.
I got a new desktop the other day. Dell Alienware i7-8700, Nvidia GTX 1070, 16 GB RAM, seems to work pretty well. Except for more RAM, I doubt I'll be upgrading anything in the machine for several years. I want a new monitor. The IT guys at work told me to get a 1440p 144hz monitor. There are a wide assortment of these out there, and I'm flummoxed by the options. Prices range from $300ish-$800ish. I don't really want to go over $450, and if I can go cheaper, great.
Even just looking around the $450 price point, the options are many. I'm hoping someone can clarify some stuff for me. Several hours of conflicting youtube opinions has caused me to turn here. I'm looking for 27 or 28 inches. I'd love one of those 34 inch letterbox ones, but it would be sort of cramped on the desk, and the reviews on those are particularly mixed.
My use case: previously I had a laptop with a second monitor and it seemed to be dying. It also wasn't good enough to play Civ 6. Turns out I hate Civ 6, so I'm back to 5 (it does fly on this machine, though). Other than Civ, I'll be doing some intermediate-level spreadsheet work, watching MLB.tv/youtube, and internet browsing with this computer. I have an xBox so if I get a game like Wolfenstein or Doom I'll get it on there so I can use the controller and the TV. I'll also use the xBox as my primary device to watch Netflix, etc. on the TV.
-G-Sync: I guess this is something Nvidia GPUs can take advantage of. Should I care about G-Sync?
-Panel: seems like the IPS panel is superior to the TN panel when it comes to color and viewing angle. IPS is the choice, right?
-Milliseconds of lag: I don't think I care if the lag is a little over 2 milliseconds or whatever given that I'm not playing online shooters. Am I wrong here?
-Since I'm not playing shooters, do I really need 144hz? Further, is my graphics card even able to output a frame rate to take advantage of 144hz? Is it dumb to go with 60hz because it will be obsolete soon? Will 144hz cause that soap opera effect if I'm watching a video? That distracts me beyond belief.
-HDR: this ups the price quite a bit. The only other thing that I have that has HDR is my phone camera. I have no idea what it is or what it does.
-Brand: anything that is good or notoriously bad? Right now I have a Samsung I bought at Costco. It's worked for seven years or more. I have no idea what the specs on this thing are, but I'm guessing it's the equivalent of pairing $80 shoes with a $3000 suit.
There are four Best Buys near me, but they all have the same four or five 1440p monitors, so I can't really go somewhere to see all the various options in person. I just want a decent-sized monitor that will take advantage of the machine I bought. Thanks for any help!
