I was little surprised when it was announced “official” this morning. I was buying into the rumblings earlier in the week it wasn’t a done deal. Indy just always seemed like a weird fit especially without assurance that Luck will be 100%.

Schefter reported that this isn't true, BB will be the coach next year and that the two biggest factors in McDaniels staying was family stability and the Pats push to keep him.
So despite what they were saying publicly (post-Wickersham) BB's status for next year was actually up in the air until just recently.

“The Colts' assistants you've seen reported (e.g. Matt Eberflus as DC) have signed contracts and have been in the team's building, sources say. Indications are they'll still be with the team, albeit under a different HC than McDaniels.“

This is actually kind of fucked. Indy is never going to attract a head coach with some other guy’s coordinator in place.

Also, no way Indy signs a defensive coordinator unless McDaniels said he was 100% coming.

Another tweet I saw said McDaniels was calling people today about assistant jobs. This dude has literally torched the bridge and pissed on the ashes.

This doesn't come close to making me feel better about the Super Bowl, but it does help me turn the page.

No. I think it's more that they simply don't talk about those things until the season is over. Season is over, they start discussing it.

You sure seem to know an awful lot about things you don't know.

I wonder if the deal breaker for McDaniels was the thought of dealing with a QB who, instead of being thisclose to fighting him on the sideline, thanked him for calling draw plays on third and long.

If you are an assistant coach being asked by McD to join him in Indy, and you are being asked to sign a contract, how do you not first ask if McD has signed his?

I’m not 100% sure about how all of this stuff works, but why is Indy finalizing contracts with Josh’s assistants before he’s signed his own deal? And why are those guys not checking with Josh to make sure it is a signed, done deal before they sign their deals? These guys have agents, right?

Why would any asst. coach sign a contract before the head coach, no matter what was said?

EDIT: What he said above me.

Colts failed to understand that McDaniels actually taking that position over any role in New England would've been a violation of the ideal job law.

Gotta wonder if him backing out of the Colts gig will be a factor when Kraft is looking for BB's replacement. This can't look good on the resume.

How can anyone feel bad for the Colts after the farce of deflategate. Personally glad he screwed them.
I don't think anyone does. The assistants that thought they'd be on McDaniels' staff there ... now they get some sympathy

Maybe he was calling potential assistants to tell them to forget about jobs in Indy?

Edit: Or it's just a stupid random tweet.

Uhhhh....you realize that Kraft is the one that wanted him to do that? And then he's going to hold it against him?

Here
I’m glad he’ll be coordinating the offense next year, but what a dick move. Really sucks for the assistants who are now under contract. What a great way to start with a new organization.
While true, he probably got them raises and promotions. It’s probably worse for the new head coach, whom I’m fully expecting to be Brian Flores for 10 million a year.

Let's wait til the details come out. Perhaps we'll hear that Colts were saying it was a done deal when it wasn't. I mean, it is Irsay.

Perhaps I should have made the sarcasm more apparent. But after 2,800 content-less posts, I figured I had set a precedent...

I allowed myself to forget the trauma of three years ago during the Colts' courtship of McDaniels in the midst of playoff football, but, in retrospect, how many people could have been more offended by the DFG accusation than the Patriots' offensive coordinator? How do you not return the favor when given the opportunity? I challenge anyone to find a better example of revenge being a dish best served cold.

I do feel bad for Luck. I feel like continuity at the top is especially important when you're at the QB position, and having to not play under all these different coaches has to take a toll.

So why did Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels decide to remain with the Patriots? It’s not because head coach Bill Belichick is retiring (he isn’t), and it’s not because the Patriots have promised to make McDaniels the successor to Belichick whenever he walks away (they haven’t).

Ultimately, McDaniels simply decided to stay put.

Some will say that McDaniels had concerns about the health of quarterback Andrew Luck. The more accurate reality is that McDaniels had concerns about working with owner Jim Irsay.

PFT had heard in recent days that McDaniels did indeed have those concerns, but that efforts were made to persuade McDaniels to make the leap of faith. He did so reluctantly, and then he didn’t. And now, as one source put it to PFT, there will be a “major storm of sh-t” over this one.

The added bonus is that Rog is probably worn out from the Super Bowl and will now have to stay up half the night fielding calls from Irsay.

I never thought it made sense that he would turn down SF (and their long contracts) a year ago because he didn't want to move his family and then jump to an arguably worse situation (though with Luck) the next season.

If you followed the Niners pursuit of him last year, this isn't a shock other than the timing.

So, presumably you have a shot at three jobs: NYG, Indianapolis, or NE in 2-3 years ... which do yo take? But wait, there's more ... what if you could have the NE job and embarrass and weaken Indianapolis at the same time?
