Brutal trade. They could have walked away with a 3rd round comp even if they didn't resign him.

wowowowowow.

Was wondering about all the linebacker movement last week, but thought it was more about someone being dinged up and Collins or Hightower being a surprise IR candidate. This is certainly a facemelter.

I mean, they generally don't get these type of trades wrong but between the way the team was rolling, the lack of playmaking on defense after moving Jones, and the uninspiring return...wonder if the lack of a contract for next year was getting disruptive in some way or something.

I am not surprised that Collins has been traded. Apropos of the date, he was somewhat trick or treat. He made some incredible plays and disappeared. But still, that the return was only a late round third is kind of shocking to me. I was assuming they'd get a first or at least a second if they traded him this season.

Now go sign Hightower!

Roberts has been the better player, though I'd think they'd keep him for depth this season. Maybe there's another issue there and/or maybe they really like what they've seen from one of the others (Mingo?) in practice. Oh well.

Yeah this is the part I don't understand. They'd have gotten a comp pick in 2018 anyway. If the trade was for a straight 3rd rounder - aka the 65th pick - I would have understood it a bit more.

This is the only thing that really makes sense. This is the message to everyone else on the team. Don't let contract negotiations get in the way of doing your job, or else you will go from the best team to the worst team, and you will have to move from Boston to Cleveland.

They'll jump a full round since Cleveland is going to pick like 65th or 66th and given the number of players that are up for free agency they weren't necessarily going to get a 3rd round comp pick for Collins, but doesn't seem like great value.

I wonder if it's a locker room/chemistry issue. Not that Collins is a bad guy or anything but just that the defense needs a kick in the pants, Collins hasn't been playing great (and isn't worth the extension) so maybe this shakes things up?

Has to be something behind the scenes, if seems more like dumping a guy than trading them.

Why would Cleveland want him, anyway? The guy isn't worth franchising.

This is so cold from Bill, I'm laughing. Won't budge on that contract and playing poorly? Here, enjoy some Cleveland Browns.

Upgrade from a 5th to a 3rd round pick (plus losing 8+ games of service from Collins).

There's most likely something else here. But they presumably are planning on re-signing Hightower and Butler.

There has to be more to this that we obviously don't know.

Maybe the hidden footage came out and Jamie was Hernandez's trigger-man?

Seriously, why would the Browns do this? They are 0-8; even if they were to win every single game left on their schedule they're missing the playoffs. Winning games in 2016 is now a bad thing for their future. Jamie Collins is an UFA at the end of the season. How does this help the Browns in any fashion? Do they think that, after seeing how well-run an organization the Browns are, he'll re-sign with them for a discount?

I find it strange that Collins, a guy every one in the league tends to rave about, only got a third round draft pick.

I tend to think BB knows more about football and personnel than anybody else so I trust him doing whatever. But this hurts.

This is pretty much where I'm at, though I don't know if I would say I'm not surprised. He was definitely inconsistent.

I think a lot of people are blinded by the big plays he makes, and seem to not notice the plays he allows because he guesses wrong, over pursues, takes a bad angle, etc. Especially in this defense, that stuff doesn't really fly.

Damn, not a fan of the trade, or the return. Can't believe they couldn't get at least a 2nd rounder.

Long term view, coming into the season they had to resign Hightower, Collins, Jones, Butler, Sheard, & Ryan. Now Collins is gone, Jones is gone, and Ryan is being demoted. Plenty of money to go around now.

They can franchise him, and then they hold the leverage over him as at a time when he'll desperately want to get paid.

Any word from Collins? From a First to Worst. He can't be happy at all.
He probably can't be but if he is asking for something like 50 million guaranteed with his sporadic play no chance the Patriots were going to do that.

Collins on the second play of the game does whatever he wants and Bills gain 28 yards. Been happening all year. It was not going to continue

Well, he's a free agent, so the bad teams won't give up a second and you don't want to trade him to a good team. I'm not even sure why the Browns want him for a 3rd.

Not surprised by the Pats trading Colllins. Not been playing well at all they need to get the defense fixed. This will get their attention
This is well and good, but that LB corps wasn't exactly teeming with depth before this. And with Hightower's injury history? Scary. Would hate to see a repeat of "Eric Alexander, AFC Championship Game starter."
