I don't know about you all, but this is my favorite time of the year. Saturday, Michigan starts its hockey campaign. I will make the voyage down to Yost and I will cheer on my #4 ranked Wolverines. It's the best time of the year. For those who have been unfortunate to not have hockey at their school, let me explain; college hockey is one of the most organic sports environments in the realm of American sports today. You have to experience it to really understand. And Yost, woooooooo-eeeeeee, what a great ice arena.

I think we have a strong chance this year, especially after having been hosed in the regionals last season by the officiating (yes I'm still bitter, I was there, it's my right). You have a strong senior class led by Carl Hagelin and Louie Caporusso. Caporusso struggled for most of last season, but came on strong at the end. He was really a large part of the revitalization of Michigan Hockey last season. Hagelin was consistently one of the best players for Michigan all season. Matt Rust was a fantastic linemate for Hagelin all season, also providing his own contribution. Bryan Hogan returns from injury and probably should take the ice between the pipes, though Shawn Hunwick is still here if he should struggle. Tristin Llewelyn, Chad Langlais, and Scooter Vaughn round out the senior class.

There is also a strong sophomore class led by Chris Brown and Kevin Lynch. These two were solid contributers as freshmen and should undoubtedly step up into a larger role as sophomores (sidenote: I'm also in class with them, so yeah, they're funny and I like them even more now). AJ Treias will probably center the third line. This is going to be a very strong team, despite losing some top recruits to juniors and what not. We should compete for the CCHA title (again) and definitely be a challenger for the National title.

Personally, I need this title. It's been a while for the most storied school in college hockey (1998). I haven't seen a title in my time here. I hope this is the year.

Looking forward to the CCHA-Hockey East arguments all season long boys. Let's get it started.

I have never decided which rink has the best atmosphere: Yost or Alfond. For a one time deal, the UW-NU game at Matthews when Dany Heatly was at Wisco was amazing as well.

I hate BC, but they are going to be REAL strong again this season. I don't see how they aren't heavy favorites. Good news is they actually play out the games.

BC is going to be very, very good. They only lose Matt Lombardi, Matt Price, Ben Smith and the ever-enigmatic but solid Carl Sneep. They gain a couple of solid guys in first round pick Kevin Hayes (Jimmy's brother) as well as two other draft picks.

Once again, the big concern for me is the goaltending position. Although Muse played well in the Frozen Four, my biased self felt it was more the effect of blocked shots by the forwards and defensemen. They played a very tight system those last two games and it worked brilliantly.

Like pretty much every BC team of this past decade, it's going to be a small one but one that should play a fast, exciting, up-tempo game. They appear much more solid to defend their title this year than in 2008-2009 when they lost huge contributors on both offense and defense. So long as someone takes the leadership reins and they figure out the goaltending situation it should be another good year for them.

Michigan visits the Whit this year and as a UM Alum and a UNH Faculty this may be quite a confusing game for me. Luckily it doesn't mean much until they meet in the Frozen Four, so I'm just going to enjoy the experience. Mid-October weekend during the peak of Fall Foliage, nice time to visit Durham. The place will be packed for this non-conference game.

Though I will add that it is much easier to get UNH hockey tickets this year. It used to be an impossible ticket to get unless you had season tickets or knew someone with season tickets - not so much right now. Time for Umile to move on.

One thing CCHA'ers should be able to agree on is that Notre Dame is going to suck. If I had to make my own predictions I would say that Michigan probably wins the CCHA tourney, and Miami the regular season title, mostly because those are the types of teams they are. Michigan hits some roadbumps, gets super hot, and JLA is a tough place to play. Miami usually just hums along in the regular season, and then breaks down and gets out of rhythm toward the end it always seems like. Alaska is the only other school to even make the top 15 right now. Miami gets Michigan at home this year, late in the season, and then of course we'll get thumped in the conference tourney later.

That's actually during my fall break. I don't know if I'm heading back east, but if I do, I'm definitely going to try and hit that game up. Missed out on Michigan's visits to Agannis the last couple years.

As long as we don't get fucking hosed in the NCAAs again. Oh my god. Fuck Miami. Seriously, fuck Miami.

Notre Dame will suck. Michigan State will have a team of criminals. What's new?

My friend and I have already decided we're going everywhere Michigan plays during the NCAAs.

I presume you will also be attenting this one with 105,000 of your closest friends, too. The outdoor stadium game thing works SO well at the college level...

I hope they''re in Green Bay.

And on December 11th, I presume you'll be among the 105,000 or so at the Big House? That game will be an amazing atmosphere...and the intensity will be through the roof (if there was one). The outdoor game thing works so well at the college level.
I have two tickets actually from my football and hockey tickets. I should have bought more though. These would have been easy to scalp. It will be incredible watching hockey at the Big House and being a part of history (already been to the game with the highest attendance, though that will probably be broken against MSU). However, I have a soft spot for Yost.

It's not enough that the refs handed you guys that game, you have to rub it in my face? I was there. That was just an awful experience. Getting screwed like that.

Red Berenson has named Shawn Hunwick the starting goaltender for the opener against Mercyhurst. Hogan will start the exhibition against Western Ontario on Sunday. I expect them to shuffle goalies like Miami does with Reichard and the other guy.

I'm really interested in seeing what the lines will look like. Might have to ask those guys to get an idea.

Haha I'm just fucking with you. You could just as easy post the video of us managing to lose a two goal lead with a minute left in the national championship, or sucking against every Boston team. It's just funny to me to see Michiganers hate Miami so much now when three years ago they couldn't give two shits about our so-called "rivalry" with you.

We're picked #1 and #2 for the CCHA (in one poll, we were number one, in the other, you were). And the BU National Championship (full disclosure: BU is probably my second team, since my mother went there and I went to games in the mid-90s), doesn't relate to Michigan. Who else would be our "rival" right now though? Notre Dame is horrible. Michigan State is always little brother...

Picked up my tickets last night and the new hockey t-shirt. I'm "sitting" behind the Michigan bench. Can't wait.

Anyone Michigan fan who is interested, check out the countdown to faceoff. It's been helping me get even more pumped for tomorrow.

Sadly, I am unsure what to expect out of the Wolverines this year. We're ranked pretty highly, and we should get in the tournament (again) barring Miami murdering us in the CCHA playoffs, no small thing out at Joe Louis. Speaking of the JLA, I hope to make it down for a Red Wings game or the GLI this year. Always a good time, with the Michigan Tech alumni association setting up their camp down by the Olympia Club (a great area for kids-not joking). I also hope to get down to Yost for a game, as it is probably the best atmosphere in hockey, period. I remember recently that Yost built it in 1929, and they used it for football more than once not often. The Big House game should be great, I wish I could get there in person. as for the team, it's well built. You have very good seniors in Hagelin and Caporusso. Defense-wise, Scooter Vaughn and Tristin Llewelyn should be just fine. In net, Hogan should be back strong from injury last year, but there is always Hunwick there if necessary. Overall, this team should live up to expectations. Who knows, maybe a national title is in the works for the Maize and Blue this year.

What do you mean, when you left? Did you really leave the game early?
Yeah, I'm a horrible fan. I thought we would keep a three goal advantage heading into the third period at home. I guess I was wrong. I had to pick up some dinner (I hadn't eaten since 2:30) and go to my friend's party. Sometimes, you have to let sports take a back seat. Not an excuse for leaving early, just an explanation.

At least I went to the damn game. All my other friends that had tickets bailed on going.

We need to cut out the penalties. Losing Hagelin was a big blow and then we seemed to be facing special teams situations for the rest of that period. Lack of discipline killed us last year, and we need to learn from these mistakes. All the sophomores looked great, Treais, Brown, Lynch...Cap got a nice goal, Merrill was solid in his debut. We just need to be more disciplined.

I just heard a bunch of talk about you being a superfan and traveling the world to see the team- thought I'd check in and see how that was going. :rolling:

Seriously though, it would be nice to see Michigan pick up where they left off last season, they played so well down the stretch, and were looking real dangerous. Be nice for Red to get one more before he's done.

New rule change in college hockey regarding icing.
Those attending the University of Vermont men’s hockey exhibition against New Brunswick on Sunday might have been occasionally confused as to why linesmen waved off what appeared to be obvious icing calls. Certainly some players were.

In the past, if a college player sent the puck into his team’s offensive zone from outside the center red line without any other player (from either team) touching the puck, it was automatic icing and the faceoff was held in the offending team’s defensive zone.

This contrasts to the National Hockey League’s touch-up rule in which icing is called only if a defending player touches the puck ahead of an attacking player. The college rule was designed to eliminate the occasional brutal collisions that occurred along the boards, including cheap shots on vulnerable defensemen along the boards.

Now the NCAA has introduced a hybrid-icing rule designed to keep the game moving. Once the puck has been sent into the attacking zone from beyond the center line, a linesman must make a judgment call as to whether the attacking player has a step on the defending player, thus putting him in position to make a play on the puck prior to the defending player. If so, the icing is waved off.

“The linesman has to make a decision by the (faceoff) dot as to which player is going to get to the puck first,” explained UVM head coach Kevin Sneddon.

I'm surprised to see the Fighting Irish in this poll. There are twelve incoming freshmen on the team, ten of whom will dress every night. In addition, the 09-10 team did not come close to meeting expectations. Jeff Jackson must have earned the benefit of the doubt from the media.

won't be playing for another year, but the 2012 beanpot should be that much more interesting... hopefully he helps win BC's third championship in a row.

Former Boston University hockey player Vinny Saponari said he is headed to Boston College for the 2011-12 season.
Full Story:

Somewhat surprising that York would want to take on somebody with a disciplinary issue, both he and Parker seem very strict.

hope the kid can take advantage of the second chance he's been given.

Meh, York doesn't run as tight a ship as everyone would lead you to believe. There have been plenty of players who weren't exactly angels off the ice. Not to say they committed crimes or whatever but many had their fair share of fun.

No. 7 Maine and UConn tied 3-3 tonight. A little surprised the Black Bears came out so flat after taking it to UMass-Lowell the night before. But I guess if you're going to be unfocused and tie someone, do it out of conference.

Should be interesting to see what Maine does Thursday and Friday night at Michigan State. Good test.

Michigan swept Bowling Green this weekend, winning 4-1 and 4-2. The Wolverines are now 2-0-1 (2-0-0 in the CCHA). They have an exhibition against the US U-18 on Tuesday before heading up to New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats on Saturday.

Good start for BU, beating Wisconsin 4-3 and Notre Dame 5-4 to take the IceBreaker. Despite the loss of a lot of offensive firepower, it seems this team will have no problem scoring goals. Freshman Sahir Gill and Charlie Coyle have already made their presence felt, and Warsofsky (2g, 3a) looks primed for a huge season. The major question now is: how will all the new guys on the blue line play? There is a lot of talent there, but just as much inexperience.

Michigan tied UNH last night 3-3. Michigan was never behind, but never in the lead by more than one goal. I wanted at least a tie from this game and we got it, but I'm really frustrated with our inability to hold the lead. The same thing happened against Mercyhurst. Hope we improve against Nebraska-Omaha next weekend.

I was there...Michigan looked real good at some things (PP, breakouts) and not so good at some things (D zone coverage). Hunwick was flat out awesome, and kept this game a tie. Enjoyable game to watch, got pretty stressful even though I'm a UMass fan first.

Heading out to Minnesota this weekend, going to catch the St. Cloud/UMN game tomorrow night. Anyone ever been to Mariucci?

Just got back from Yost. Tonight was one of the worst performances I've ever seen. Shades of the team that failed so hard against Miami early last year. The first 50 minutes were absolutely miserable. It looked like the whole team had been at Skeeps last night. They played like they were hung over. Nothing was right, the teamwork sucked, the skating sucked, the hitting sucked. We were down 4-0 after 2.

Then Kevin Lynch hit a guy to stand up for a teammate by the UNO goal. He took a penalty, but it was a good penalty. This team had no fire. For the last ten minutes, they played like Michigan. Lynch scored the first, Wohlberg took the second. They just didn't have enough time. Let's hope for a better performance tomorrow.

Maine scored just 43 seconds into the game en route to a five-goal outburst in the opening period that carried the Black Bears to 7-3 win over the nation’s second-ranked team, North Dakota, in front of 5,216 fans. Maine snapped a three-game winless streak and improved to 2-1-2. North Dakota fell to 3-1-1.

Hot, cold, hot, cold. I'll give them this much; when Maine gets hot, they get really hot.

Last year Maine reeeeeally struggled when their starting goalie was hurt and they had to play one of their two back-ups. This year one of those back-ups, Shawn Sirman, is the starter. He's been okay so far but his progress bears watching. This team definitely has plenty of firepower but the goaltending could be their downfall.

So far it's 2-1 at 18:17 in the 2nd, Maine. What happened? Their goalie last year, name escapes me, was thought maybe to leave his "issue" behind and maybe return. I guess he didn't.
Update: Maine wins 4-2 to sweep #2 North Dakota. Should move up from #12.

Much better from Michigan tonight, a slaughter in fact, 6-1. David Wohlberg put Michigan on top 8 seconds into the game and they never looked back. Scooter Vaughn and Carl Hagelin both contributed goals, Nebraska wasn't ever really in the game. Nebraska eventually tried to start a fight, which they lost and results in the dismissal of one of their players for a game misconduct. There were still some issues of questionable discipline, but it was a good win to get. We've got Ferris State next weekend for a CCHA away and home.

The celebration on ND's part was a tad...overexuberant. I thought they had just won the National Championship. Act like you've been there before guys.

For whatever reason ND has seemingly always had BC's number in the regular season in hockey. One of those things that's tough to explain.

Scott Darling, and yes, the issue didn't go away so he did from Orono.

Maine started sophomore Shawn Sirman (19 saves) in Friday night's win and 21-year-old freshman Dan Sullivan (23 saves) in Saturday night's win. Looks like those two will get most of the work. And offensively, the Black Bears are getting balance. The top five scorers in Hockey East -- Spencer Abbott (5-6-11), Robby Dee (4-5-9), Gustav Nyquist (2-7-9), Joey Diamond (4-4-8) and Tanner House (4-3-7) -- are all from Maine.

We beat Ferris State tonight after fighting hard to work for a tie last night (we lost in a shoot out). Tonight, Scooter Vaughn (he's having a great season), Kevin Lynch (we have BIO Section together!), and "Hot" Carl Hagelin all scored. Bryan Hogan was once again very solid in net for the Wolverines. I have been really impressed with his display thus far this season. I think Hunwick's run last season was good for him. I think it made him understand that he had to fight for his place. He has been nothing short of stellar thus far. As a team we have to step forward on both sides of the ice, but we're playing well.

Maine played its first road game in Hockey East play tonight and won 3-2 in overtime at Vermont.

Sets up an intriguing matchup next week with No. 6/7 Maine at No. 5/6 BU. Not a two-game series, though. Just one game Saturday night.

There's a good article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press about the upcoming summit between the NHL and college hockey. Paul Kelly of College Hockey, Inc. and several division I coaches will be traveling to NHL headquarters to meet with Gary Bettman. What I want to see addressed is NHL teams signing NCAA players in the middle of the season, and signing players with eligibility remaining only to stash them in the AHL.

Maine and BU tied 2-2 last night. Another missed chance for Maine, which has now squandered late leads at Michigan State and at BU. Still probably too early to be thinking Pairwise, but those games -- had they been wins -- would've made Maine's resume far more impressive when the numbers are crunched.
