Final minute. First NCAA win for Providence since 1991. This will be the second straight 4-0 shutout loss in an NCAA tournament game for Quinnipiac, going back to the title game vs Yale.

UND-WI on ESPN News and will switch back to ESPNU once PC finishes it off.

THIS... is the MAIN EVENT!  Already plenty of hitting and chippy play. Nets being knocked off moorings at both ends. Matching minors are about to expire with 16:00 left.

Michael Parks draws first blood with 14:54 left to put UND on top 1-0, taking a feed from behind the net after a dump & chase, and no defenders to stop him from stuffing it past Rumpel. Parks now has 5 career goals in 7 games vs Wisconsin.

Chyzyk scores to put UND up 2-0, but it's waved off. He gets a penalty instead for failing to avoid contact with Rumpel as he barrels into the Badger goalie. Wisconsin's defense is letting down their guard early on with these Sioux net rushes, and it's going to cost them.

Badgers tie it with 8:19 to play. Jedd Soleway corrals a bouncing puck after a turnover and rifles it home from the left circle.

It came moments after UND's captain Dillon Simpson headed to the bench doubled over and holding his left wrist.

Sioux on the power play on a tripping call on Jefferson Dahl with 5:30 left.

EDIT - The Badgers made it look easy killing that one off. They looked like the Globetrotters. I think UND crossed center ice just once.

If Gillies heats up, Providence is a very interesting team. They were my pre-season darkhose darling. Of course, it's hard not to like what Union is doing right now. Excited for that match up.

Still knotted 1-1 in Cinci as UW & UND head to the dressing rooms. This one has lived up to the hype so far. Lots of energy and physical play on both sides.

Wisconsin killing off yet another Sioux power play with 7:30 left. Still a fast-paced game with end-to-end skating and few tie-ups in the corners.

All tied up 2-2 as the Badgers' Tyler Barnes skates in on the right and fires a half-slap over Gothberg's glove. Less than 10:00 to play in regulation.

Sioux retake the lead 3-2 with 1:44 left on the clock as Mark MacMillan lights the lamp on a doorstep redirect of a Brenden O'Donnell slapper from the right point. It'll be reviewed for any issues with high sticks, skates in the crease, or goaltender interference.

EDIT - As expected, the goal stands.

The ensuing faceoff came in UND's zone on the right circle. As the puck went behind the net to the left corner, Rocco Grimaldi lofted it out of the zone on a backhander. And into the empty net it goes, just inside the left post, for a 4-2 Fighting Sioux lead.

43 seconds left and the Badgers need a pair of miracles.

Well, that settles it. Grimaldi with another empty-netter on a breakaway for the hat trick makes it 5-2.

North Dakota silences the critics who said they didn't belong in the field. A Wisconsin win got them in. So did a 3rd-place game win over Western Michigan -- a game no other Division I conference plays in its tournament. But they just sent the Big Ten Champs and the #4 overall seed packing.

Before watching the game today I didn't realize that UVM coach Kevin Sneddon was the sacrificial lamb who dragged Union's program from absolutely nothing to something at least resembling a D-1 sport in the face of an administration that didn't give a shit. Mat Bodie graciously thanked him for his efforts in the handshake line even though he was just a kid at the time. Good stuff. Tomorrow he'll get the chance to say the same to Nate Leaman, who probably recruited him (and the other older guys on the team) and gave Union 8 good years paving the way for what Bennett has done in his short tenure.

This is yet another reason I am very excited for tomorrow's game between Union and Providence. It should be pretty cool on many levels. Current Union coach Rick Bennett played four years at Providence and began his coaching career for the Friars as an assistant. Bennett, of course, then jumped ship to Union to join then-Union coach and current Providence coach Nate Leaman. Bennett was eventually promoted to Associate under Leaman and then full on Head Coach when Leaman left for PC.

Leaman coached five active Union players during their freshman seasons (Carr, Bodie, Ikkala, Hatch, and Sullivan). Seven more (Gostisbehere, Stevens, Novak, Ciampini, Coatta, Vasaturo, and Bennett) were all freshmen the season after Leaman left, so he almost certainly recruited them as well. It's possible Leaman had his hands on a few of the '12-'13 freshmen as well, but he should be responsible for at least 12 of the guys on Union that he'll face tomorrow. That list of players that Leaman is responsible for includes Union's captain (Bodie), both alternate captains who happen to have been ECAC co-player of the year (Gostisbehere) and Union's leading scorer (Carr), the starting goalie (Stevens), and the second leading scorer (Ciampini). Leaman should know them well. Hoping for a great match up.

Union up early again after a snipe by Bodie from the top of the circle. Unfortunately I missed it as ESPN2 had to stick with tennis while Serena finished wiping the floor with somebody.

Absurd quick whistle when GIllies never really had it. Union looks really sharp.

1-0 Dutchmen after the first, with Bodie nearly making it 2 ringing another bomb off the bar.

Gostisbehere had an unreal sequence in which he made 3 or 4 legitimate saves in a row. Gostisbehere is a defensemen for those who aren't familiar with Union.

While nice, I think that's also why BC won't win it this year.  Too top heavy and a young and shaky, albeit talented, backline and goalie.

Dutchmen up 2-0 at the end of two after yet another early period goal, a softie by Gillies who has simultaneously looked very shaky and played very well. Stevens stood strong on one Providence breakaway but other than that Union played a solid, safe period. The Friars are going to have to take some risks to get more offense going.

Can't say I'm crazy about the dump-and-retreat shell Union has dropped into, but it's working out so far.

Yeah, I was surprised to see them go to that. "Playing not to lose" generally backfires more often than not.

6:15 left, and still nothing doing offensively for PC.

EDIT - And no sooner do I post, but Saracino scoops the loose puck off a rebound over the scrum in front and into the net from the right doorstep with 5:05 to play. 2-1, Dutchmen.

Ugh, predictable. Ass-clench time.

HUGE rush by Novak and the finish by Hatch to get the breathing room back.

Matt Hatch gets it back for Union on a feed from Max Novak. 3-1 Union.

EDIT - Man, that was pretty. Novak came screaming around the back of the net from right to left, and all the PC eyes were on him. Nobody put a body on Hatch who crept toward the left side of the crease, took the perfect feed, and one-timed it.

That's two really solid wins in a row for Union against a pair of more physical opponents. Nicely done.

If they want to win the crown, though, they'll have to make it three straight over Hockey East teams.

Back to the Frozen Four! The program has really gone places since I quit my work-study at the Achilles Center under its bitter and tyrannical rink manager in the spring of '06 for a cushier gig at the library.

Minnesota playing big, dumb & stupid. Already down a man for roughing, they commit another needless penalty trying to be the bullies of St. Paul. RMU ain't backing down though.

* Minnesota cruised to a 4-0 lead, but RMU answered twice in the 2nd period. Leading scorer Cody Wydo scored at 13:43, and later Wydo fed line mate Zac Lynch left-to-right to finish a 2-on-1 break in the final minute.

4-2 Gophers with 20 minutes to play.

* Ferris & North Dakota scoreless after a period in Cinci, though the SIoux have carried play and lead in SOG 12-8.

Cory Kane gets a wrister past Gothberg to give Ferris a 1-0 lead with 12:30 left in the 2nd.

The Bulldogs now killing off a penalty (Kane for slashing), and with 12 secs left in that one Scott Czarnowczan goes off for tripping. The Sioux will be up 2 briefly.

EDIT - And there's the tying goal on a one-timer by North Dakota's Paul LaDue on a give & go at the left point with 9:20 left.

No scoring yet in the 3rd out in St. Paul, but RMU's Matt Cope just went off for interference with 6:00 to play to put the Gophers on the power play.

EDIT - And just seconds in, it's Hudson Fasching making it 5-2, Minnesota.

David Friedmann scores for Robert Morris to cut the deficit to 5-3. Still lots of work to do and only 3:34 to do it.

But Minn's Travis Boyd is going off for goalie interference, so there's still hope for the Colonials. However, they're 0-for-2 on power plays today and scoring at just 17% on the year.

RMU pulled their goalie with 20 seconds left in the power play and the face-off in Minnesota's zone, and it backfired as the Gophers get an empty netter to seal it with 1:40 to play.

By the way, it was 35 years ago on St. Patrick's Day that UM-L (then the University of Lowell Chiefs) and Minnesota State (at that time Mankato State) met for the NCAA Division II National Championship. All-American and future Bruin Craig MacTavish led the Chiefs to the title that day, 6-4, by scoring the game-winning goal.

The following year, Mankato got revenge in beating Lowell 8-1 in the national semifinals on the way to a championship. And they'd meet again in 1981, also in the semis, with the Chiefs winning a slugfest 8-7 in overtime on the way to their second crown.
