I don't really know what to make of this LSU-UCF game. LSU seems (just watching) to be a lot better. But UCF has blown a bunch of great chances to do more, and this is all with their backup QB.

Does it matter much? Swap UCF into the Clemson game or into the Alabama game, and they’re getting an ass-whuppin.

I can see the charm of seeing a different team, a team other than ND, getting the ass-whuppin. But beyond that, we’re in the same place.

Mack is an ok backup, all things considered, but having watched a ton of UCF in recent years, if Milton were playing, there is no doubt in my mind they are winning this game, and probably pretty handily. He's just a difference maker in every sense of the word. Besides what he does running/passing, he's a leader, the guys respond to him, he's a super intelligent player, etc. I don't care what school it is, or what the competition is, you don't win 20+ games in a row unless you're really good, and he's really good for a college QB (he's probably too small to play at the next level, never mind the devastating injury).

LSU is using WR’s as cornerbacks. This is LSU’s bench scrubs playing against UCF’s best (except at QB of course).
I’m sick and tired of UCF demanding respect as a powerhouse.

Expanding to 8 is going to resolve a lot of arguments, assuming no byes and the 8 playing the 1. That would have had UCF v Alabama, and Alabama picks the score.

And if the complaintfest is centered on who got screwed by being ranked 9 instead of 8, then fine. It’s a foolish complaint and will prove of no consequence once the record of those 8 vs 1 games begins to come together

So what’s the point of even expanding to an eight team playoff if it’s only to satisfy those schools that can say we got in and got the honor of having Alabama drop 50 on us?

This also ignores that the fact now that the players have to play yet another game. Who is going to pay for the insurance for a player who breaks his leg in a meaningless 1 vs. 8 match?

LOL, that's about as understated as it can get, I guess. I mean, the true Freshman with 40 completions in his life coming into the biggest game in school history, should be lighting it up right now.

The whole thing sucks for everyone involved, IMO. Milton's injury means we never get to see what really would have happened, and those who are determined to never give UCF credit will call it an excuse, while those who think UCF is actually a good team will point to it as the reason this was never really a fair fight.

As a big college football fan, I'm just pissed we all got hosed on what could have been both a great game, and another step towards expanding the playoff system. Hopefully, Milton will recover enough to be able to get back on the field and lead UCF to another undefeated season next year, and we can do it all again.

Who pays the insurance when an SEC team plays a DII team week 1? And for that matter why not just cancel the whole season altogether? Let's just line-up the preseason top 4 every year.

I mean, what's the point of even letting non-P5 schools play any games at all if we're not even going to let them have even a miniscule chance at a championship?

Wouldn’t you have wanted to see Georgia v Oklahoma? (5 v 4)

In most years, the purpose of expansion will be to enable 5s and 6s that otherwise would have been shut out.

By that score, why play any football games when someone could break a leg?

The players signed up for a 13 game season (assuming the team makes a bowl game) and fans like you weren’t happy with the BCS so now they have to play one more game in the current system.

Now the fans are bitching yet again and they want the players to play one more game. Just pay the players and they can expand to a 64 team playoff for all I care.

I agree that they should pay the players. And "fans like me" weren't happy with the current system and wanted it fixed. It's still not fixed.

LSU is missing 8 defensive starters, including the best DB in the nation, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I'm also very happy UCF lost today. Enough of their chatter. Do whatever it takes to play a real schedule and then you'll be in the mix.

Milton’s injury is not keeping this from being a true test. Milton’s injury, LSU’s defensive back situation, and LSU playing an exhibition game while UCF is playing their Super Bowl are all contributing factors that make this not a true test.

If UCF were actually willing to play the big boys when it actually counts then this whole conversation would be over. UCF wants a home and home with any potential “big boy” matchup. The big boys don’t want that as it would be the CFB equivalent of Lincoln sitting down with CSA ambassadors and calling them such.

Valdosta State won the Div 2 championship with a cumulative record of 14 - 0. Those guys too are on scholarship.

I try to keep the fairness argument separate. The NCAA is corrupt and abusive, IMO. I’d like to stick a white hot poker up the asses of those who complain about players declining to play in Bowl games. But you could roll back the system of anointing champs 40 years, and these inequities would remain.

Been saying it all year, Haskins is the guy I want as the next QB for the NEP. Probably won't happen, but I think he has the best future of any of the QB's in college right now.

Haskins is incredible. If the Pats got him, SoSH should celebrate, hard. They will have to trade up, assuming Haskins goes into the draft.

The thing I love about him is he's one of the few college QB's that truly goes through his reads. Most of them will look downfield, and force it in there, especially with his arm strength and accuracy, rather than check down and take the 5-10 yards that's usually there. He's really impressive.

Jumping in way late. But losing one of the best QBs in the nation is a big hit. UCF isn't Bama. If Brady got knocked out the Pats wouldn't be the same team either.

Ya I would have rather had UGA - Clem than ND - Clem. Ya have 6 or 8 would have been better. But without their star player UCF is an also ran. Even with LSU's defensive losses the QB is the most important guy on the field.

How many games would Oklahoma and that Powerhouse defense have won this year without Kyler Murray?

Anyway, it's not worth the argument. Like I said, college football fans got screwed over when Milton got hurt, because we could have at least settled one debate (ie. whether or not they could have competed with and beaten the big boys).

It's also not their fault the committee (cough, Florida ducked them, cough) didn't put them in the Peach Bowl against Florida, instead of against a depleted LSU team. That was the real joke this year, basically on par with sticking them against Auburn last year. Instead of Florida/UCF in a battle for state supremacy, and Michigan/LSU (who have never played against each other), we got Florida/Michigan again, and nobody cared about it, again.

Don’t think that’s not intentional. A College football game is a great spectacle. College football the sport is a dirty scam enterprise.

From several local reporters here, UF has actually reached out to UCF with multiple proposals.

No, you don't mean that. After all, the Florida AD, who sits on the playoff committee and helps determine who plays what bowls said he "left the room" when it came time to talk about his school's opponent. I mean, we have to believe him, right? These guys are always so above board. No, the reason they didn't set this matchup was because Michigan at #7 was the highest ranked team, so they got to play in the bowl closest to their school. After all, Atlanta is sooo much closer to Michigan than Arizona.

Wait. I think we are agreeing. The top QBs make a huge difference. Except for maybe Bama, but Tua just takes them to another level. I was rooting hard for UCF (With Milton) to make the CFB playoffs.
UCF is good but not a top 4 without Milton.

UF didn't reach out to UCF. UCF reached out to UF, and offerd a home and home, or 3 games, one at each school and one on a neutral site in Florida. Florida responded with 2 games at their school and 1 in Orlando (although there is a question as to whether the one in Orlando would even be at UCF's campus stadium, or at Camping World in Tampa).

The problem with that proposal is that it doesn't make any sense for UCF at the moment. Why would they commit to that when there is already a massive groundswell about expanding the playoffs to 8 teams. Once that happens, and it will, UCF doesn't need Florida anymore. They can play the same schedule they've been playing, and still get a seat at the table, without giving up home games in the process.

Yeah, that article I just linked is from the reporter that broke the UF/UCF story and obtained the emails between the two AD's. If you read it, he thinks it's laughable that the two teams weren't put in the Peach Bowl.

Hope Texas doesn’t get blown out like UW.
I hope so too, but I fear it's going to be more of the same.

It also deprived us of seeing Ohio State play Georgia, which could have been awesome. People forget that Georgia/Ohio State had a memorandum of understanding to play a home and home series against each other in 2020 and 2021, but seemingly out of the blue, Ohio State cancelled after hiring Urban Meyer in 2012. I can't seem to remember if anything ever came out as to the reason. Meyer generally owned Georgia when he was at Florida, so it was strange. Those two teams haven't played since like 1993.

Here’s the article about the email exchange between the two AD’s. Mike Bianchi is one of the best reporters on UF athletics.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/open-mike/os-sp-ucf-gators-danny-white-scott-stricklin-college-football-playoff-20181216-story,amp.html

As far as who initiated the conversation, I’ll back off my UF initiation statement but only a little as it started after a public statement by Strickland. Local radio guys (UF alums with seemingly legit sources who had Mullen days before he was named last year) say that that email exchange wasn’t the first contact. I know it will be hard to find a source for that but I’ll hunt a bit for it.

Right, Bianchi is the one who wrote the article I linked to as well (I read him quite a bit), and I think it's pretty clear from that piece that he doesn't believe the committee's reasoning for not putting UCF and UF in the Peach Bowl. You can see the tongue planted firmly in his cheek when he talks about Stricklin not involving himself in that decision.
