Excluding pitcher, I don't know that I can recall any time when a team lost 3 starters at the same position to serious injuries within the span of a month. Hell, this rarely happens in the NFL over this short of a time.

It just happened to the Yankees at 1B with Teixeira (although he is trying to play through it despite definitely needing surgery after the season), Ackley and Parmelee, plus Greg Bird in the offseason.

The FO thought a converted catcher who played a couple pro games in the OF would be a better choice than Brentz, so...I dunno. Holt was the the opening day LF, so if he's somehow ok I'd guess it's gotta be him. Interesting how little the org seems to think of Brentz. They've had plenty of chances to bring him up, but they've almost gone out of their way not to do so. He and Coyle have got to be hanging on to the 40-man by a thread.

It would be cool if Allen Craig had something going on right now, but of course he's injured too.

It's probably that neither of those players are good. That said, this situation is exactly why they're on the roster.

The Rangers have lost 3 SPs in the span of like a week, including two in one day.

Edit: Didn't see the "excluding pitcher" part but still somewhat amazing regardless.

Since it's Young who is injured, this is the first time they've needed a RH left fielder, so Brentz might get the call, or Castillo.
They have one roster spot open with Young to the DL, and LaMarre could be sent down at any time. So I would guess Brentz will get the call for now, and Holt will come up when he is ready, which could be tomorrow or later in the weekend. But you don't want to rush a guy coming off his second concussion. Hopefully he will be ready to play in the majors soon.

LaMarre is one of the weird and dying breed of Bat R/Throw L, so presumably they don't "need" another specifically RHH LF unless they're somehow really into right-handed throwers in LF. A decent one of any handedness would be great.

The roster/bench flexibility of Swihart being able to cover behind the plate also came into play in that decision I would assume.

Given the Travis Shaw callup results last season, why not bring up Brentz?

I don't think it's a typical thing to perform better in the majors than the minors. Even then, Brentz has had chances before and never looked special. The fact that LaMarre came up first tells you how much his stock has fallen; two years ago that would have been Brentz's spot.

age 27 Bryce Brentz's lifetime minor league #s: .262/.326/.459
age 25 Oswaldo Arcia's lifetime minor league #s: .297/.358/.517

They wouldn't be a bad platoon in LF. At least offensively.

Could this be Rusney's last best chance or is he not an option?
Considering they outrighted him off the 40-man roster rather than option him this last time they sent him down, I think that ship has sailed. Unless something magically clicks and he catches fire over the next couple months, I imagine the next time we see Castillo in a Boston Red Sox uniform will probably be in Ft Myers next March as a non-roster invitee.

Speculation on my part, but it seems the front office isn't overly concerned about the injury situation. They assume Holt will be back any minute, and resume his opening day role as the every-day left-fielder, aided by whatever AAAA guy is left (Brenz, LaMarre).

The 10-day DFA period for Arcia ends Sunday, and if DD hasn't moved on him yet, I'm thinking he won't.

Yesterday I was joking on the game thread about other options; Shane Victorino, Nate Schierholtz, Domonic Brown. Those are indeed awful ideas.

However, the front office is going to need to dig a major league outfielder up from somewhere. Holt isn't healthy enough to be an every-day player, and is better suited for the super-sub role anyway. Is this where we take on Nick Markakis? Ugh.

I'm guessing since LaMarre was brought up first and has better Pawtucket stats, he's the presumptive starter until Holt returns. SoxProspects says this about Brentz "Fringe-average hit tool plays down to below-average due to lack of plate discipline, poor pitch recognition and over-aggressive approach." Ugh.

Great. Give him the locker next to Hanley.

Not thrilled with Brentz, hopefully very short-term

Hanley, Vaz, LaMarre/Brentz is a huge 7-9 black hole

In 2010 the Sox lost Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek within three days, while both their AAA catchers were already hurt. Which led to trading for Kevin Cash and his playing 30 games with a .378 OPS.

Eh. I think LaMarre got called up first because he can play CF. I have zero confidence in Brentz to be even remotely adequate as our starting LF, but I suspect he'll get a chance to do so.

1n 1973, the Mets lost starting catcher Jerry Grote and backup Duffy Dyer to injury. Traded for veteran Jerry May, who promptly got hurt in his first or second game and then used Ron Hodges straight from AA, where he had been been hitting about 150 (but actually didn;t suck for the Mets).

Hanley has three hits in the last two games. Farrell probably moves him back to the 5 hole today. Maybe not, but he has to come out of it sometime. Why not now? The way he's swinging the bat, he doesn't look like a guy that's hurt, but WDIK?

Young is a good way to prevent Benintendi from getting worn down. In the long run his apparent lack of a platoon spit will make him the everyday left fielder. For now, Young and his unusual ability to hit lefties gives the kid a break.

Yeah, even if Benintendi doesn't suck against lefties, Young still probably hits them harder. When Holt was the LF, even though he has pretty neutral splits (this year he hasn't hit lefties at all, but he has like 30 ABs), it made sense to start Young against LHP because he murders them.

Also, Benintendi, Young, Holt, Betts, JBJ offers a ton of flexibility for testing (or, you know, resting...) outfielders down the stretch

I assume you mean Resting and I think you are right. I think it also means that Young's strength against LHPs combined with all three starters abilities and needs to rest means that we might see Young and Benny in the lineup at the same time.

I hope that Holt will be used primarily as a Util Inf until 9/1, especially is Marrero gets down today to make room for Owens.

Was also curious about "testing". If you meant resting then I do agree. I like this group as a whole and now the guy they were forced to rely on as there everyday LF now becomes the 5th outfielder and free to be used where he's most valuable to the team.

Yup, definitely meant resting. And I agree with you that there may be times where Young and Benintendi are in the lineup at the same time - vs a LHP when JBJ needs some rest I can definitely see Beni in CF with Young in LF.

And JBJ can play RF -- even at Fenway -- far better than Holt or Young, if Mookie needs a day here or there for his calf during the last grueling 6 weeks of the season.

Anyone know JBJ's minor league splits vs L? Why wouldn't the lineup be like it is tonight every night vs a L? Isn't he the weak bat? Or does his defense override that?

edit: He has little career split but his career is so weird. He has a huge split this year.

MiLB.com still has all his stats. He had one half-season where he had a reverse split, but otherwise was better against RHP. It could either just be him getting a night off, or he might be the one who sits when a LHP starts to give Chris Young a chance to do what he does - kill LHP. Benintendi has more neutral splits in his short time in the minors and can handle CF just fine. When Young replaced JBJ in CF earlier in the year the defense suffered for it, but putting him in LF with Benintendi sliding over is less of a defensive dropoff.
