Given his public demonstrations when things didn't go his way it feels naive to think he hurt his non-throwing hand falling off a bicycle.

Came up on one of my 4 wrist surgeries, but I’m pretty sure docs can tell a good deal about how an injury occurred based on imaging. Like a break from a punch will look different than one from sticking your hand out to break a fall.

But would falling off a bike look different than falling off a bar stool?

Anger/substance issues. Doesn’t believe he fell off a bike. Likely punched a wall or something. Questions his other out of game injuries, how & why they happened.

Well, Sale has 2 - a cracked rib and a busted wrist.

According to Captain Septum, what kind of substance causes a cracked rib?

What's the insuation? I don't want to listen to Mazz's nasal whine.

And what's the deal with that?

You kind of have to wonder if he sticks something up there and it gets stuck.

I mean, no one has ever given us an explanation about that.
One thing they brought up that I had forgotten is the mysterious broken foot in 2015 that he was cagey about. Looking back on that it is consistent. And weird.

https://www.mlb.com/news/chris-sale-fractures-right-foot-in-accident-at-home/c-110730586

But it was all speculation. They were wondering if maybe the same impulses that caused him to pitch a hissy during his rehab start or cut up uniforms caused him to get angry if he was cut off on his bike and do something that led to the injury.

Wasn't he going to BC to throw? That suggests to me a more-than-minimum amount of fucntion.
I wondered about that report. It's hard to imagine throwing productively with a fractured finger. I assume the finger is splinted somehow, and the thought of throwing with a splinted finger or for that matter, throwing with an unsplinted fractured finger hurts a little just thinking about it.

He rolled his foot in the off-season and made 31 starts that year.

What is is that "consistent" with? How is it "weird?"

Can we not cast aspersions on people’s personal lives and accuse them of substance abuse because two of the shittier sportswriters in town have nothing better to do?

I only brought it up because it’s one of the NESN in game broadcasters that’s saying it.

You don’t break your distal radius throwing a punch.

No idea if he fell off a bike, fell off a barstool, or jumped off a building.

But I highly doubt he got that injury punching someone or something.

Yeah, this. Definitely more to the story which seems like the local reporters are hinting at. His anger is on record with the uniform rips and trying to destroy the TV at a triple A club. Given his history of breaking his foot at home, getting a rib stress fracture during the lockout, followed by a mysterious non-orthopedic, non-Covid medical setback, and now a bicycle accident where there have conveniently been zero videos of a high profile athlete getting injured while in the BC/ Brookline area it's hard to believe he's not his own worst enemy.

Edit: Don't believe it's an alcohol/ drug thing by any means, dude is just angry.

Will Middlebrooks has been very active in defending Sales today on Twitter, and one of the things he keeps saying is that the finger is no longer broken because of the surgery.

Does Will think surgery heals broken bones instantaneously or something? Surgery or no, it's still healing.

How the hell did he land Jenny Dell again?

I think they are on to something. Maybe they should look at the film and see if he reaaally broke his finger trying to field a ball.

My assumption was that this was Dombrowski's big Red Sox deal and he didn't want to lose it, ie Koppech and Moncada keep paying dividends for the White Sox while Sale was pitching for another team. I think he backed up the Brinks truck dumped a ton of money on the guy (I'm actually surprised that Sale wasn't injured signing the contract) and hoped that Sale wouldn't completely break down. Or maybe they made contract offers to their biggest free agents (Mookie, Sale, etc) and Sale knew what was up at the time and jumped at the chance to sign while Mookie bet (no pun) on himself and wanted to get to free agency.

Otherwise, I'm with you, I have no idea why they extended him after 2018.
I thought it was more of a "lifetime achievement" award or something like that. After all, Sale had "only" earned something like $40M up to that point.

Here's another article from that 2015 Sale injury when he fell off a truck and fractured his foot. The writer then lists all the freak baseball injuries that turned out to be not the whole truth. Doesn't look like they have updated it with the latest "riding his bike to get lunch" incident just yet.
Some other quotes in this one too:
Sale, talking to reporters with tongue in cheek, said he was actually fighting off an intruder, delivering roundhouse kicks to the head.
And he told several of his teammates, "I'm going to the grave with it.''

Or alternately he should be forced to join this conversation.
I was shocked reaching the end and it’s just Brutus, Cassius, Judas and Tony Mazz endlessly discussing Sale’s contract and injuries.

He broke the foot. It is consistent with the idea he is injury prone. It was weird that it was reported at the time as though it was an open secret in the White Sox clubhouse that the unpacking boxes story was not accurate.

As for data, I found these in the 37 seconds I'm willing to devote to demonstrating that Sale riding a bike is not like Lonborg skiiing or Jeff Kent washing his truck, or Wade Boggs willing himself invisible.

incidents referred directly to the medical examiner.
Yes but we sort of have to travel in automobiles. We don’t have to ride bikes when we have broken digits that are trying to heal.

Also, yes you can ride a bike with a broken hand - but it’s also very easy to crash because your weight is not evenly distributed on the bars. I actually broke a pinky riding bmx and you can’t ride safely afterwards - you can do it, but the wrong move equals trouble.

If something happens where you need to put more weight on, or steady the bike with the bad hand (like hitting a pothole you didn’t see or misjudging a turn) there’s an impulse to overcompensate with the opposite hand. So you end up using the wrong side of the bars to steady the bike to keep from putting too much on the the injured hand. Then it’s curtains for you, and you risk an awkward, dangerous fall for the same reasons - protect the bad hand. And which wrist did he break? The right wrist - opposite of his injured left hand.

This reminds me of the people who said you can throw fine with a broken pinky because it’s not directly used in gripping the ball. It isn’t used directly, but your range of motion is extremely restricted.

It was also 100 degrees out that day. We’ve been in a blistering heat wave drought. Athlete or not why would you go riding out in that weather.

Well. Looks like Columbo cracked the case.

What are we doing here? If the point is that he lied, other than local beat reporters on a slow media cycle - who gives a shit? Name the last player to get their contract voided by a team. Worst case, he lied and the Sox would fine or suspend him. Woopdee fucking do.

If the point is "he has an anger issue"...so fucking what? In a league where Marcell Ozuna can strangle his ex-wife and still be paid almost $20M a season, I'm supposed to give a shit that Chris Sale isn't taking his anger out on someone else?

By the way, multiple people here are combining a broken wrist - a distal radius fracture where an ortho surgeon pretty clearly stated a few posts above, "You don’t break your distal radius throwing a punch" - with broken ribs and a broken foot...and trying to insinuate all of those happened because he kicked/punched things. With no proof at all.

This board is better than that.

This "he has anger issues" stuff is such bullshit. When Paul O'Neil was routinely destroying water coolers after striking out on a Yankee dynasty, it was because he was "a gamer" who "cared so much." When David Ortiz smashed a phone, it was okay because he was "Big Papi, curse breaker." But when an overpaid, injury prone member of a disappointing team smashes a TV out of frustration, it's a sign that he's a bad, bad man.

It's like the chicken and beer thing in 2011. That members of that team would drink team in the clubhouse meant that they were unprofessional losers. But the 2004 team doing shots before the comebacks in the ALCS showed how loose they were and demonstrated Kevin Millar's great leadership.

It's all sportswriters and fans trying to fit the story to the outcome.

X Rays would definitely show a much different location of break from a punch vs a fall. When you brake a fall your hand is open. Punching someone closed fist. Bruising would tell too (bloody knuckles vs scraped palm)

I don't know what happened, but if he punched someone/thing and broke his wrist, the Sox would know.

Are we sure that Sale isn’t involved in the that massive fentanyl ring with Hanley Ramirez that several Boston media members (McPhee, Carrabis, Merloni, et al.) “sleuthed out” a few years ago?

There’s not much worse than sports talk radio. Sale’s injury is maddening but on the bright side, it probably nets us a slightly better draft pick. I still think there’s hope he has a couple more 3-4 win seasons in him.

Do you mean like 3-4 WAR or like literally he goes 3-5 in 11 starts?

My favorite take on that award was from Kate Upton (Mrs. Justin Verlander) who vented her displeasure at Porcello winning by saying "The only one allowed to f*ck my husband is me."
A HoF worthy girlfriend/wife quote. Although, based on the Celebgate scandal from that time, I definitely think there were other people fucking her husband.
