Yeah this. And like I point out in almost every thread about a contract, it's impossible to state with any certainty what a player's tax situation will be because there are several variables that have to be considered. So trying to calculating his savings is a pointless exercise.

 
And quite frankly, every jurisdiction has certain, umm, monetary needs that have to be met, and generally we all pay for them in some way shape or form, whether it be income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, water/wastewater taxes, or what not,
 
I never did understand the preoccuptation with income taxes, and hopefully, when someone is negotiating a 100 million dollar taxes, their agent could give them an idea of their total tax burden by jurisdiction.

The proliferation of foundations among rich athletes suggest they are preoccupied with taxes.  Income tax considerations, state and federal dwarf all the other taxes , and a lot of money is spent on accountants and lawyers to help minimize them.   For the average Joe making 100K a year its perhaps not a big consideration, but when you make 20 million a year it is. 
 
How much of a consideration taxes were in Choos decision I have no idea.  Cost of living considerations, quality of life, property costs, etc are all part of the equation.   I suspect taxes were perhaps a lesser consideration for him since only 1/2 of his MLB income would be subject to NY taxes, and he can establish residence outside NY to protect his non-baseball income.
 
Also, maybe he just wanted to play for a contender. The Yankees immediate future under the 189'ers is pretty bleak.

The point isn't that athletes aren't concerned about taxes, it's that the tax problems are so complex that there are people who have full time jobs just for that specific need. We're not going to figure it out with idle speculation. It's not just blanket state taxes of home vs away. Some cities have taxes per game. There are tax refunds based on which states you're playing in when that credit your home state. The taxes would change drastically year-to-year based upon each team's individual schedule. There are some taxes that apply to just being on the roster and some which only apply if you actually played in a game on a specific date.
 
Just saying "he saved $15M going to Texas" like one of the linked articles said is simply untrue.

I don't know - maybe it's not such a bad thing to have TEX, LAA, OAK and SEA beating each other up. Takes away a little of the advantage the West teams enjoy from facing the Astros 19 times a season.

Average Joe makes nowhere near 100 grand. And its probably not the case, but someone making 100 grand should be a lot more concerned with their tax rate than someone pulling in 20 million

Ehh.  That's not that impressive.  Andrus is a good hitter for a shortstop but not impressive.  Fielder was not that great last season.   Rios sucks every other year.  Moreland's nothing special and Soto hasn't been a good hitter for a couple years now.  I look at that lineup and see Choo, Beltre and a whole lot of maybe.

In Woody Allen's movie Sleeper, he wakes up 200 years in the future after being cryogenically frozen and there has been some kind of nuclear attack in the interim that disrupted society.  They have gaps in their understanding of how our culture worked.  They show Woody's character a clip of Howard Cosell at his *most* overbearing and solemnly ask him to confirm that this footage was used to torture prisoners.  Yes, he replies, that's exactly what that was used for.
 
Deep in the future, if only splintered cultural artifacts exist, that footage in the spoiler may be hypothesized to be film shown to pregnant women whose fetuses are expected to be born with birth defects in order to convince them to have abortions.  If any of us awake in the future, please tell anthropologists of the 23rd century that, yes, that's exactly what that footage was.

Truth......

Plus there's a good chance they'll piss away some winnable games due to the genius that is Ron Washington. That was the area that probably needed addressed.
