Cheap webhosting site with Apache and ssh access?

Hey, technology mavens. I have a question for you.

I run a small website to serve pages for some courses I teach. Nothing fancy, just plain hand-coded HTML running under Apache. Everything is static content.

I'm thinking of putting a copy of some material (way less than 1 GB) onto a remote server. Ideally, I could connect via SSH, copy files from my current server, maybe add a few and make some edits now and then. I don't need WordPress or Drupal or any database. I'd much prefer to do stuff via command-line than by some fancy GUI, if I can, since I'll do all the development on a local machine, and just copy files to the remote site.

Any suggestions for good places to contact?

Are you comfortable installing apache yourself? If so, you could get a cheap VPS for about $5/month.
I've used these guys and found the service to be really reliable/easy to use:

https://www.linode.com/pricing

The $5/month plan should be more than sufficient for what you are describing.

They install the OS for you (Linux) with some basics (ssh access) but you'd have to install anything else yourself (apache, ftp daemon if you want to transfer files that way, etc)

Dreamhost is cheap and good-enough for what you describe.

Nobody should use Linode under any circumstances (consider Digital Ocean or somebody who doesn't treat security as tertiary).

Can you elaborate on the security issues with Linode?

Never had a problem with NameCheap's $5/month hosting. I can't speak to security, but their CPanel is pretty fully-featured and has SSH.

Linode has a history of having their control infrastructure owned, most recently in 2016. I am (and I'm speaking in a professional capacity, though the snark is free!) unconvinced that they have demonstrated sufficient give-a-shit to trust them.

I don't particularly like DigitalOcean; they are the Wal-Mart (Linode is a K-Mart that is on fire) that tries to keep people who should know better but don't off of AWS/GCE/Azure with handwaving and half-finished features. But that doesn't apply here I trust them to tie their shoes and if your needs are very modest (a single server) they are a better choice.

StupendousMan just needs to serve some files, though, and running his own web server is probably overkill when he can just SSH into a shared box.

Amazon is my employer's biggest direct competitor by a country mile, and even i can't think of a good reason (besides maybe cost) to use anything other than AWS for pretty much anything.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions. Indeed, for my purposes, a shared server would be just fine.

I'll spend a bit of time investigating the options people have posted, then make a decision. Thanks again!

Right, just grab the free tier baby Linux box and you'll be fine. (Atleast for the first year, it might have some nominal cost after that)
