Not going to lie, was hoping Miami would take him in round 2. Watching him go to NE one pick in front of Miami in the third certainly stings.

Maybe the most NE player in the draft.

He can also catch passes (former TE). Not that Belichick ever asks players to play on the opposite side of the ball or anything...

This guy fucking rocks. Insane motor, nice complement of moves, and student of the game. Will definitely thrive in NE under BB. Fell because of perceived physical shortcomings but he was a 3* out of hs that was all big 10 (I think).

Winovich was the most fun player to watch at the Big House last year. Full of personality... and talent.

Depth? PFF had a first round grade on him with a 92.3 pass rush grade - only Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, and Joey Bosa graded out better. His combine measurables were elite.

Winovich’s play style is going to see every cliche in the book thrown his way, but he’s far more than just a high motor. At the combine in Indy, Winovich put up a 4.59 40-yard dash, 6.94 3-cone and 4.11 short shuttle at 256 pounds. All of those are elite figures and he ranked top-five among all defensive linemen in each drill. Here’s the full list of players besides Winovich who have run 4.65 or better in the 40 with a sub 7.0 3-cone at 250+ pounds at the combine this century:

Brian Urlacher (2000)

DeMarcus Ware (2005)

Mark Anderson (2006)

Cliff Avril (2008)

Connor Barwin (2009)

Jason Worilds (2010)

Jerry Hughes (2010)

Justin Houston (2011)

Jordan Willis (2017)

Harold Landry (2018)

Leighton Vander Esch (2018)

That’s some pretty darn good company. Every player that’s gotten through their rookie contract on that list has been a resounding success. Jordan Willis has been the least productive of the bunch but is only heading into his third season in the NFL.

With production and athletic comps putting Winovich in elite company, it’s worth asking what are the knocks keeping the Michigan defender from getting more hype? It could be that some simply didn’t realize how absurdly athletic Winovich really is. His nfl.com draft profile listed his NFL comparison as Markus Golden, a man who is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum athletically after running a 4.90 40-yard dash and a 7.39 three-cone at the NFL combine in 2015. The profile even says he could be limited by his physical traits and explosiveness despite having the third-best 10-yard split of any defensive lineman at the combine (1.57). The bottom line is Winovich, a defensive lineman with already refined hand usage, incredible on-field production, and elite athleticism. When evaluating the Michigan draft-eligible defensive linemen, this is the one worthy of a first-round pick.

I think they killed day 2. To be honest I liked Wino more than Rashan Gary. Wino is all the scrappy, hard-working, and football IQ traits put in a highly athletic body. He’s a little undersized but he overcomes that with his hand usage. He is a good pass rusher. Getting him a round later than he was expected to go is a win.

Wynn, Winovich... it’s obviously the new market inefficiency.

That and seemingly extraneous punctuation marks. N'keal was a good pick but wait'll you see the guy with a stray umlaut that they're targeting in the sixth round!

First team All-B1G. And also two-time second team All-American!

Early comps have him being very Ninkyish, but I actually think he’s more like Vrabel in terms of his position versatility, football IQ and personality. I think he’s going to add a lot to the locker room in addition to his production on the field.

DJ Khaled going to be making a lot of royalties out of Foxboro.
If "All I do is Win" doesn't get blasted on the PA after each 3rd down stop by this guy I want a new sound guy.

One of my favorite players ever at Michigan. Winovich played a big part in suppressing Gary's sack and TFL numbers because he was simply faster to the ball. He continued to produce at a high level in 2018 without elite play from UM's interior DT's.

I think he is nothing like Nink - he has elite speed and quickness - question is leverage and strength. More of a TJ watt type

I love being the team that, beyond just getting their call, players are ecstatic when they find out we’re drafting them. “Massachusetts! Patriots!”

Mark Schofield @mascho with another excellent Locked on Patriots podcast on Thursday, where he argued that Chase Winovich could be a full down player in the NFL. Said he had excellent hands, and excellent pass rush plan and mental approach (swim to the inside and dip and rip to the outside) insane motor ("he wants to kill you"), and very good skills against the run. Sets the edge extremely well, and turns things back to help.

Saw his podcasts praised in another thread (N'Keal's) as well. And the Joejuan WIlliams podcast was also very good.

Based on various sources including the LOP podcasts, seems like the Patriots maximised their take from this year's draft, at least from the first several rounds.

Good for him.

However it’s sad that something like this exists in the US (Lunch debt). Kids shouldn’t have to go broke just to have a meal.

They don't. Did you read the link you posted? He's paying off the school system's debt for subsidizing meals for kids. The schools "owed" the debt, not the kids. This isn't little Timmy owing his elementary school $14. It's not "sad" this exists, it's a good thing. Now the school system doesn't have to pay that money. The "lunch debt" is what is allowing needy kids to eat.

But then the school has to cut athletic, music, etc programs to balance their budget. Food/shelter is obviously a higher priority ...

Not everyone has heard your words of good cheer.

Yes, but unless you can figure out a way to produce free food, then a system that allows the kids to eat is a system that is doing good work. I just wanted to make sure it was understood that if he hadn't paid, it wasn't like the school was coming after families directly for this. It's part of their budget.

Only 5 defensive snaps and a handful at special teams in 3 games this season. Clearly saw the writing on the wall. Hope all goes well for him.

I had such high hopes for him when he was drafted. Alas, it always seemed like he was hopelessly out of position.
