I’d guess something like a mid level prospect and a 2nd. Donato/Frederic/JFK

edit: Donato and a 5th apparently. I like this trade a lot

Donato and a 5th (if true) is a real good deal for Sweeney.

Donato may yet put it all together, but for right now he’s a one trick pony.
I agree that this is good value now, but man did they miss the boat on his value last year. They could have gotten a haul for him in the offseason.

That said - selling low on Donato, buying low on Coyle. Curious if he can turn it around here but the record of people coming back home to the B's isn't great. There better be another move for a top 6 winger.

I looked up his current contract, saw that he is schedule to make $4.25M in the 2019-2020 season. Is this going to be a bad issue? At least it's for more than a short rental.

No that’s a very movable deal if you need to move him to do something bigger in the offseason.

Haggs wrote an article in December saying he didn’t want Coyle so there’s a point in favor of the deal

Yeah, this is decent. Stings to lose Donato, but they have a surplus of winger prospects. There’s no real way they could keep Cehlarik, Bjork and Donato and fine enough ice time for all 3

Coyle is on a good cap number for this and next year, and certainly will be the best 3C they’ve rolled out all season.

I like the trade, we needed a 3C badly at this point. It does sting to lose Donato but JFK and Frederic are not ready to take the 3C job yet.

Eh, a lot of red flags with Coyle for me. Shooting % has gone from career best 15% in 15-16 to 11% to 9% and now 8.8%. He is also pretty terrible at FO career 46% and basically a career neutral Corsi and FW rating.

Would have preferred to see Donato in a deal for someone with a little more upside. Coyle looks closer to a rich man's Beleskey or Hayes.

6'3, hometown, big-bodied kid? Typical Bruins trade.

I actually am kind of for it. Hasnt been great lately, but he still has upside and does a lot of the little things well. Plus as noted, hes the best 3C weve rolled out this season, so...fuck it. Why not?

What sucks is Donato was probably their best trade chip that wouldn't hurt the future.
Coyle by himself does nothing to measurably help the Bs. If he was a complementary piece then sure he could help elevate the blackhole that is the 3rd line a bit but now they need to dig further into their prospect stockpile and likely ship out a Studnicka or Vaak plus a 1st for an impact trade.

I would have been OK with Coyle for a 4th but I think they sold low on Donato and paid market value for Coyle.

The center options on the trade market aren’t great. They would’ve had to have paid a 1st, Donato and something else to rent guys like Duchene or Kevin Hayes. After that your down to the Brassard’s and Sheahan types that they likely could’ve gotten for a mid round pick. Coyle seems like a reasonable gamble for the Bruins, and they get him for a year and a half.

I don’t think losing Donato means they can’t do something bigger here in the next 5 days. They still have plenty of pieces.

I wonder if they were trying to get both Staal and Coyle and Staal wouldn't waive. Savard had the tweet last night about a player holding up a trade.

I like this deal. Bruins get an established NHL middle-six forward for a 5th and Donato. Donato’s future was tough to read. Great hands, great instincts but not much of a skater and could get pushed off the puck. The kid’s heart must be broken.

I hate hate hate rentals given how much you typically end up overpaying—always seems like you can find guys with term ahead of the deadline for much better prices. So I’m glad to get someone locked in next year for hockey reasons and also, psychologically, to stave off the potential regret of throwing pieces away if the seasons ends too soon.

Feels a bit like a Peverly/Kelly type deal that feels a bit underwhelming but fills a needed spot. Does sting to lose Donato if he rounds out the non-skill aspects of his game.

I don't love trading for term just for the sake of trading for term. It is the mid tier Beleskey type contracts that kill flexibility in the off-season. Given Charlie Mac and Carlo will both need substantial raises and Chara will need to be reupped or replaced the 3.25 hit might be unnecessary if JFK or Studnicka/Frederic are ready. That extra 3.25 may prevent them from adding a top tier FA in the offseason.
Now if they add a Kreider who is performing well above his cap hit for another year that would be a significant win.
Picking up a 3rd liner who is playing at market rate isn't that exciting.

I will admit to not knowing Coyle as well as others. But I worry that Donato has a very good upside and that we may well see it play out down the line.

Don Sweeney knows all of this. I'm not head over heels on the deal but it's not going to stop them from doing anything they want to do in the offseason.

Beleskey was a useless player on a long-term deal who is still on the books despite being long gone. Not even close to a guy signed for one year at market rate.

Interesting. I thought it’d be Frederic or Kuhlman. Unless Cehlarik’s injury made him the choice.
Guess it makes sense to pair Coyle with Krejci to start until Pasta returns or they trade for a top 6W.

Whatever Donato's upside is, it seemed that he made zero improvement in any aspect of his game that needed improving. Assuming his offensive skills are as advertised, he didn't have to morph into prime Lucic or a Selke candidate, but other than playing in the offensive zone with the puck, he seemed to add nothing. I didn't see him play at Providence, but I'm sure the brass did.

Cehlarik is dinged up and the only scratch that could be sent down without waivers. They had to move someone and the other other candidates (Frederic and Kuhlman) were playing when they made the deal. I think it is possible they make a Cehlarik for Frederic swap before the STL game barring any further trades. They are only allowed 4 regular call ups between the deadline and the end of the regular season so there will probably be some juggling between now and Monday with waivers and the waivers exempt players at the bottom of the roster.

Also, Cassidy said they’ll probably start Coyle at 3C.

I don't think this is really fair. Coyle is a much better skater than either of those guys and his shooting percentage isn't likely regressing due to skill with his PDO dropping 4 points since last year. His XGF% is 55%, which is good offense. He's certainly not Mark Stone but he's a good 3rd line Center. He also has a pretty weird split between offensive zone draws (well oer 50% for his career) and defensive zone draws (puke). I don't know what that really means but its there.

I like Donato but it scares me that his biggest weakness (lack of foot speed) is keeping him from being in position to ever use his biggest strength (shot, hands). I don't know that he ever tops out as more than Coyle is now. Maybe more goals.

To put a bow on the transaction, Cehlarik up; Frederic down. Was just a paper move last night to get Coyle on the roster.

He's a career 10.9% shooter, so the 15% was probably an outlier.

Thought Coyle had a strong debut. Much stronger on the puck than I had expected based of multiple MN Wild fans reports of him. Also seemed to make the right play at the right time and didn't try to do too much and the SO goal was a thing of beauty.

If he can keep that level of play up he should fit in well.

Bruins stats on Twitter had a stat that the third line had one high danger chance in the past 6 games, and with Coyle they had 2 in their first 5 minutes together. He also finished with good possession numbers that seemed to confirm what I saw. He really made the third line significantly better, and after a brief adjustment period was very effective. The shootout goal was nice, but driving possession and making the third line a viable threat was great to see. Nice game from Charlie, and I agree he was very good on puck battles, and seemed to create a half dozen opportunities while he was out there.

Production has been poor but my eyeballs tell me he's been a solid contributor. Having a rotating cast of linemates - including some AHL drek - hasn't helped much.

11 games is still a small sample size when it comes to point production, especially for a guy like Coyle.

One goal, one assist in his last 11 games.
Hot take police! Clearly a shallow take and pretty disappointing coming from you. Do you intern for Adam Jones now?

While the stats aren't there, his Corsi is 61.2%, and his Fenwick is 61.5%. Those are gigantic possession numbers, and show that he has rescued that third line. The sooner they get healthy, the sooner they become a 4 line wagon again. I still love that trade.

All you have to do is watch the games to see that he's been an effective player.
