I don't know the guy-- and some people here might and have some basis for having a perspective on this-- but I really wonder if/why Steve would want to go be the DC and UNC. The dude is already a successful DC at a higher-status program. He's young enough to be on track for DC position in the pros or a HC position in college.

I do look forward to the BOB and BB college football matchups … not a sentence I ever thought I’d write.

Also, do you think Matty P will get his own desk as BB’s assistant at UNC? Type is his emails and make appointments for him?

Maybe he really likes spending time with his old man and loved coaching with him? He knows there won’t be many years that opportunity exists so take advantage of it now. He can still be young enough to strike out on his own later.

My point exactly. At some point you'd think Steve would want to get jobs based on their own capabilities and merit, not because their Dad negotiated it into his last head coaching job. I get bringing him with you as a coordinator, but why not let him earn the HC job on his own?
BB is already a lame duck coach with a short lifespan. You cannot compete on the recruiting trail with that type of uncertainty. This way they can sell the continuity of the Belechick regime so other schools cannot use that against them.

I know it's been said 100 times, but I am really surprised he is OK walking away from the NFL wins record only 26 away. I guess he had to choose between the ego hit of not getting the record or cooking with someone else's groceries.

I listened to the Athletic Football pod with Robert Mays and Conor Orr on coaching openings and they were kind of on that page that "total control" mattered more to him than the record. And there was a thought that teams out there, as strange as it sounds, just don't trust turning their whole operation to him at this point. Which may be the ultimate case of "what have you done for me lately".

Edited to add--I can't see any way that he couldn't go at least 10-7 with the Jags roster (assuming Lawrence is healthy next year) even without making any changes. So I am surprised it came to this.

Still hard for me to believe.

Have to imagine Bill and his agent did some owner canvassing behind the scenes and NFL teams were not interested, at least at his terms/level of control.

If he was likely to get an NFL job I have to assume he would prefer that.

Will be interesting to see how much of an investment they will get for NIL to try to buy his way into the playoff.

I wonder how strong the language is for Steve to take over?

Does BB pass the napkin immediately after the trustees meeting or does he have to wait a week?

Honestly, any recruit worrying about how long his coach will be there is an idiot... coaches have been leaving schools during recruiting visits for decades,

It's also all about the bag now in the portal and HS recruiting. If UNC steps up their NIL game to the level where it should be, then it'll work out fine getting players.

Going to be getting season tickets. When I moved to NC one of the hardest things was giving up my Pats season tickets. Now I get to spend a few years watching Bill coach and do some warm weather tailgating.

Wonder if his girlfriend gets free tuition as part of the deal.

Bill deserves a coaching job somewhere. He’s obviously very tight with Saban who I’m sure will be advising him either officially or unofficially for the next few years.

Everyone complains that college prospects are less prepared for the NFL than ever. Maybe Bill helps a culture shift.

Boy, did Jerry Jones fuck this up.
Arthur Blank, too. I don't think it's crazy to think the Falcons would be cruising to a division championship if he'd had the cojones to tell Terry Fontenot to either get with the program or quit.

Legitimately shocked this actually happened despite the momentum the last few days. But who knows what makes this guy tick? All we really know is that he loves coaching football. If he surveyed the NFL market and there was no interest, then teams are staffed by idiots and deserve to continue sucking and getting fired indefinitely. I hope he wins it all next year.

where I was last at
BB's the new BMOC and his massive bruised ego was stroked.

He's going to sell season tickets and attract attention to a program that's generally been in the shadows.

For one year.

Beyond that, I've no idea.

As a Tar Heels fan and not a Patriots fan, I’m ecstatic about this hire. He can’t be any worse than our recent head coaches and has the potential to be a LOT better. Let’s do this!

Wow. Well, I was rooting for Navy but I'll happy take UNC.

I deeply, truly did not want Belichick to spend a few random years obscuring his NFL legacy with the Jaguars or especially the Cowboys, let alone rooting against him and rehashing the Brady/Belichick debate every Sunday.

This will be fun from the outside -- I'm sure there will be tons of videos of his NFL buddies coming through campus and speaking to the students, and we'll get some great press conference moments, and sideline shots of him frowning after a TD. Happy with this result.
I imagine Belichick was rooting for Navy too, but the job wasn't open.

I didn't care whether he went back to the NFL or to NCAA, I just wanted him to be happy whatever he did. He's going to be coaching again, under slightly less insane amounts of pressure, likely with his son alongside him, in a warmer climate, surrounded by hot 21-year-olds as far as the eye can see. I think it's possible he sees what's next for him as something close to Belichick Heaven.

So from that perspective I'm happy for him, even if it's an unexpected next stop. And it'll be more fun than it has any right to be, to watch him absolutely bewilder some poor young 19yo option quarterback on the other team

Sure they have been leaving…..but prior to the recruit signing they sell the kid and his family on the long-term dream and vision of the coaching staff. That’s college recruiting 101.

Lock the thread! It won’t get any better than this!

BB already did well on the recruiting front advertising his program as a "Pipeline to the NFL". How many 17 year kids now see him as their prep for the Show?

I think it is as simple as the NFL owner fraternity is a billionaire's club that needs their fragile egos stroked, whereas a college AD can get fired at a whim so they just want the best results WHOMEVER it is. I also think Kraft spread a lot of info about how difficult BB was to work with to the other owners. However what the other owners failed to factor in is that you are looking at only a 3-4 year commitment to hand over control then you reset with the next hire - the Kraft bitterness is mainly present due to the duration of their relationship and pent up feelings over 20+ years.

Well perhaps the family likes that part of the country. It is supposedly very nice in NC. Bill is originally from TENN so they may like that area of the country.

not bad for a Pats fan (no post-Pats NFL legacy)

kinda sucks as a BB fan

If a college kid wants to be coached by the best there's ever been, suddenly UNC looks very attractive.
