Changing a username?

So yeah. How can I change my username? I seem to remember reading that the ability to change one's SoSH handle is auctioned off for charity every once in a while?

Any info about how I can go about ditching the IHateDaveKerpen handle would be much appreciated.

Don't get me wrong - I still hate Dave Kerpen. I'd just prefer a new name.

When I signed up with my username, I tried to make it "Conigliaro's Potential" instead of "ConigliarosPotential", but for some reason the system wouldn't let me put in a name without punctuation and with a space. So I'd quite like to fix that at some point, FWIW, just because I'm a grammar snob.

SoSH used to have a policy against changing names, but it's antique and can be suspended. PM me with your preferred new name. Expect some reminder of your old username to show up in your tagline (ie, "still hates Dave Kerpen") -- we'd like to maintain some continuity and recognizability.

I'll do this only once per user, so choose wisely.

This is intriguing, I never really thought hard about my name at the time, I just wanted to stop lurking. I figure I will spend the next few months overthinking what my name should be, then end up not changing it because I'm afraid of choosing wrong.

Back in the day I had 2 accounts because I'm not sure why. I was dumb and chose this name instead of Cesar Crespo. I'm not sure if that's available or locked or whatever but I'd like that username if possible.

I did a quick search to make sure he hasn't had off the field issues and as far as I can tell, he hasn't.

Somebody already has the name of Cesar Crespo. Is that your other account?

It was my other account a long time ago. Back it 2004. Another mod asked me what name I wanted to keep and I picked this one. I don't know if the account was deleted and someone else ending up using the name or not.

I renamed both accounts: Bosox79 is now Cesar Crespo, and the old Cesar Crespo is now Cesar Crespo (duplicate). I don't want to delete the duplicate account, because that can screw up the archives, but please don't revive the old account.

I won't. Thank you.

I've set the (duplicate) account to Disabled, too, which should make it impossible to revive meaningfully.

The fact that seemingly everyone who got their name changed is a member of the Port Cellar does not help. If we have another crisis like earlier this year when everyone's picture got deleted I will have no idea who the fuck anyone is.

Can we get a pinned chart of old and new names? It seems like a lot of work to figure out whose posts aren't worth reading all over again.

I think this seems reasonable actually. Have past names tagged in their profiles at least?
Their avatars are the same and their old names are reflected in their tagline. I expect the number of changes to be in the high single digits. If you're still unsure, then read this thread.

I was thinking of going with The Stallion who Mounts the World but was talked out of it. First time I heard it said I knew that it was me they were talking about, not Rhaego.

Same here -- got an apostrophe in, but (with all due respect to Binge Mode) I'd like to lose the underscore.

edit: Thank you, Sprowl. It's unnerving how liberating it feels.

For the record, my advice would NOT be "get banned after teasing the site's founder a little too hard, get invited back a year later, then ten years later try to quit cold turkey by having a friend change the email and password, fail to quit, make a new stealth account, get that banned 2000 posts later in a fit of pique, then make a 4th name and roll with it for a while because you're now in your 30s and no longer quite so impulsive".

I would probably recommend going along with Sprowl's offer.

Sounds like a case of SoSH Rehab gone wrong.

Nice route, Magellan.

Oh, you're dead to me. One of my greatest moments.
And this changes things, how?

For the audience at home - the rest of the story.

Atlanta bash, 2007 I believe (12 years ago? fuck!)

Brian McCann is circling behind the plate to catch a pop up. The ball strikes the wire holding up the screen, eluding McCann's glove.

DJ with the instant heckle - "Nice route, Magellan."
