Proud of my Catamounts' effort last night.  Their offense wasn't in sync for most of the night, but scratched and clawed it's way to having a chance at the end.  The drought continues.

My girlfriend's Jaspers are dancing and now let's hope that the Seawolves do the same on Saturday.

I got back late from this game last night.  If you're wondering why the offenses looked so out of sync, the arena felt like a sauna, and I think the heat got to the teams pretty quickly.

In the Tigers vs Tigers SWAC opener, #10 Grambling led by 3 at the half and they're now leading by 4 over #7 Jackson State, 77-73 with 1:05 to play.

EDIT - Jackson State's Julysses Nobles missed a jumper and then a three before turning it over with :41 left.

EDIT - Grambling now up 82-73 with :11 left after hitting more FTs. JSU's last score was a layup with 2:19 left.

EDIT - It's an 84-75 final.

* In the MEAC, #8 Howard beats #9 NC A&T 53-47. The Bison get top seed NC Central in a quarterfinal tomorrow evening. Yesterday's two first round winners, #4 Norfolk St and #5 Savannah St, will meet in the 8 pm quarterfinal.

* In the Horizon final, WI-Milwaukee is up 16-7 over Wright State 6 minutes in on the strength of 83% shooting from the floor.

* In the NEC, #5 Mount St. Mary's with an 18-11 lead over top seed Robert Morris with 11:00 left in the half. Julian Norfleet leading the way with 8 pts.

Both underdogs still in control of their conference championships while playing on the road. The MSM Mountaineers have stretched their lead over RMU to a commanding 40-24 with 3:49 left in the half, while Milwaukee is up 24-17 on Wright St. with 7:37 left in the opening frame.

Mount's lead at halftime is 48-32, shooting almost 70%, they're 6 of 9 on threes, 6-for-7 from the line, a 13-8 edge on the boards, and 9 assists to RMU's 3. Their inside-out game is working to perfection, as Norfleet has 14 while big man Taylor Danaher has 11 and forward Will Miller hit for 11 off the bench. Both bigs are a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor.

Wright made a couple of unanswered buckets to get within 4, but Milwaukee closes the half on a 9-3 run and has a 10-pt lead at the half. Forward Kyle Kelm with 14 pts (8/9 FTs) and 4 boards, while Malcolm Moore has 7 pts & 7 reb off the bench, including 4 ORB. Overall, it's an 18-13 rebounding advantage for the Panthers.

In the C-USA opener, bottom seed Rice, a winner of just 2 conference games this year, outscored #10 North Texas 30-21 in the 1st half. The Mean Green stormed back in the 2nd, getting to within a point at 37-36 with 10:45 to play. Rice again stretched things out and Austin Ramljak's three put them up 56-49 with 2:08 to play. But NTU's Brandan Walton buried a three with 1:48 left, Jordan Williams hit a lay-up 20 secs later, and Chris Jones drew a foul down low and sank both FTs with :23 on the clock, all while the Green held the Owls scoreless the rest of the way.

That sent the game to OT at 56-56. Ramljak hit another from out deep for Rice 43 seconds in, and the Owls led 62-58 with 1:51 left. A Walton three and two more FTs by Jones were sandwiched around a critical pair of missed free throws by Ramljak with :23 left, putting the Mean Green up by a point with :11 on the clock. Marcus Jackson missed a jumper at the buzzer, and North Texas survived, 63-62.

Mount St. Mary's is on their way to the dance up 19 with 3:54 left, and there hasn't been a damned thing RMU's been able to do about it all game. The Colonials sure as shit aren't going to find some miracle elixir in the final 4 minutes, and the Mountaineers have destroyed every defense they've thrown at them -- zone, man, 1-3-1, press, you name it.

Meanwhile Wright just hit a couple of buckets to cut their deficit from 13 to 9 vs Milwaukee. Just under 6 minutes to play, Panthers lead 65-56, and they've grabbed a whopping 12 offensive rebounds.

EDIT - Six unanswered for Wright St, and Milwaukee turns it over again.

Heh. Mount St. Mary's fans swarming and storming the Robert Morris court. Great scene. Can't wait to see these kids in the play-in game.

The Colonials become the 8th automatic NIT bid recipient.

Wright now within 4 with under a minute to play, 67-63, after an 11-2 run.

EDIT - Milwaukee with a huge move underneath, with yet another ORB and picking up a foul. Two big FTs swished, and the Panthers are up 6.

EDIT - Wright misses a three, Tybee with a board, and Dixon with an unnecessarily hard foul. Tybee got up to charge him, but was smartly intercepted by his mates and turned around.

EDIT - The Panthers dribbled out the clock, and they're on their way to the dance.

* All Zags so far in the WCC final, as they're up 20-8 with just over 12:00 left in the half. Gonzaga's shooting 9-for-12 while BYU's just 4-for-13.

EDIT - Make it 25-9 Gonzaga. 10:30 until halftime.

* In the Summit final, IPFW's up 22-16 over NDSU with 9:19 until the break. The Mastodons have a 12-5 boards lead, including 3-0 on ORB, and they're shooting 4/7 on threes vs the Bison's 2/6.

EDIT - Bison on a run, and they've cut it to 28-27. Huge block by TrayVonn Wright on IPFW center Steve Forbes on a dunk attempt. 4:00 left in the half.

Kid can elevate, huh? That was impressive.

BYU shooting just 33% while Gonzaga's at 61% including 4/7 on threes. The Cougars also have a huge edge in free throw attempts, making 8 of 12 while the Zags have shot just twice (makng both). Gonzaga's guard pressure has been insane, making 6 steals, forcing 10 turnovers, and limiting BYU's ball movement and passing lanes (just 2 assists vs 11 for the Zags). Even BYU's 8-2 edge on the offensive glass isn't helping them at all.

Great comeback by NDSU. Up 1, they get a stop on IPFW and grab the rebound with :45 left and a 10-sec shot clock difference. With 12 secs left, Taylor Braun drives left to right, gets the Mastodons' big man Forbes up in the air, draws the foul with the body and shot-puts the ball up and in while falling away after contact. Nails the FT, and they're up by 4.

IPFW gets a quick basket with 3 secs left, then fouls with 2.2 left. Corey Brown hits the 1st for NDSU, but misses the 2nd leaving IPFW hope. The Mastodons get the rebound, but the best they can do for a shot is a 3/4 court chest heave, which bounds off the backboard a few inches to the left of where it needed to land. North Dakota State wins it, 60-57.

The Bison head back to the dance, while the Mastodons will likely get an NIT, CIT or CBI bid.

He's now 0-for-3 tonight. Not that it matters much in the end, he still got his 20/13.

Tough way for Kyle Collinsworth's season to end if that knee injury's serious. BYU will undoubtedly get an NIT bid, and his absence would leave a huge hole. He's only a sophomore, and for him to put up such rebounding numbers as a 6'6" guard while distributing the ball and scoring effectively both inside and outside has been pretty impressive.

Collinsworth is heading off on a two year mission so he's going to get two years to heal without losing playing time.

I thought they said he just returned from a two year mission in Russia.  Maybe that's where he learned how to grow that rat tail.  Got to believe someone from the honor code police will be after him to cut his hair real soon.

Also, from someone who has watched at least 25 Gonzaga games this year; don't get suckered into picking them in your hoops.  They are a one and done type team.  They can't play a full 40 minutes.

Yep, not to rag on Gonzaga but this isn't the same type of team you have seen from them in the past. If you take a look at their resume, their only top 50 wins have come over BYU and even with this win I don't expect them to be much higher than a 7 seed.

* In the SWAC, #8 Prairie View A&M eliminated #9 Mississippi Valley St, 79-63. The Panthers go from one APR-penalized team to another when they face top seed Southern U in a quarterfinal tonight. Yesterday's other winner, APR-hindered #10 Grambling, plays #2 Texas Southern in a quarterfinal this afternoon.

* In C-USA, #14 Marshall upset #11 Florida Atlantic, 63-59, behind Chris Thomas' 21. The Owls turned the ball over 15 times. Later, it was #12 East Carolina coming back from a 9-pt halftime deficit to knock out #13 UTSA, 79-76. Akeem Richmond lit up the joint for 36 pts on 11-of-19 shooting -- all on three-pointers. Paris Roberts-Campbell added 20 for the Pirates. The Roadrunners fall short despite a balanced attack with all 5 starters in double-figures, led by Devon Agusi's 21.

* In the ACC opener, #12 Wake's been in control ever since #13 Notre Dame scored the opening bucket. They're up 77-69 with :49 left, and the Irish and their ugly-ass uniforms are done.

EDIT - It's an 81-69 final. Coron Williams was 7-for-8 from the floor and the FT line, and made his first 4 threes on the way to a 25-pt game for the Deacons. Devin Thomas added 19 pts along with 10 boards.

* In the SWAC, APR infidel Grambling won't win another game this year. The 10-seed Tigers trail 2-seed Texas Southern 70-45 with 5:00 left.

* In C-USA, #10 North Texas looking to pull the upset over #7 Tulane, leading 39-29 with 15:28 to play. The Mean Green led by 11 at the half.

* #15 Va Tech out to a quick 15-7 lead over #10 Miami, as they've hit their first 4 threes. The Hokies' only two regular-season ACC wins both came at the expense of the Hurricanes.

* Final in the SWAC: #2 Texas Southern 79, #10 Grambling 54.

* C-USA: #7 Tulane has battled back to take a 62-59 lead over #10 North Texas with less than a minute to play. And now the Mean Green cut it to a point with a bucket. 39 secs left.

EDIT - NT's Brandan Walton misses a tying three with :03 left, and the Green Wave hit their FTs down the stretch. They hold on for a 66-61 win. Jonathan Stark with 21 pts and Tre Drye grabbed 11 rebounds.

* #8 Utah up 34-24 over #9 Washington at halftime in the Pac 12 opener.

His teammates are just 6-for-17 from the floor overall. Miami's winning the board battle, 15-10, while the Hokies are hitting 55% from the floor.

* In the Mountain West, #8 Utah St is all over #9 Colorado St, 24-14 midway through the 1st.

* In C-USA, #14 Marshall trails by just 2 to #6 Old Dominion at halftime.

* Final seconds for Miami-VT, Canes up 53-52 with 21.1 left. Hokies will inbound pending officials' review of who just knocked the ball out. Miami has several fouls to give, so VT will have trouble getting a shot off.

EDIT - And there's the first hack. 16.6 left.

EDIT - And there's another one. 10.3 left.

EDIT - VT inbounds under their hoop, and they're able to get fouled while shooting. Unfortunately, the Hokies suck ass at free throws.

EDIT - Predictably, Joey van Zegeren misses both. Then he fouls out on the rebound attempt, which puts VT over the limit and puts Miami at the line the rest of the way.

EDIT - Rion Brown nails them both. VT needs a three to tie with :08 left.

EDIT - Devin Wilson gets fouled with 5.7 left, which puts Miami over the limit. He hits the first, and VT calls time-out. Do they miss this one intentionally and hope for the rebound? Or make it, foul quickly, and hope for a Canes miss and a final VT shot to tie?

EDIT - Well, he does miss it, and Jarrell Eddie gets the board, but loses it on the way up. Miami sinks 2 at the other end, and it's over. Jim Larranaga's Canes are still dancing like Muhammad Ali, 57-53.

The Rams made a game of it and then some, charging back to a 31-31 halftime tie, and then taking a lead in the 2nd half that grew to 62-51 with 2:40 to play.

But the Aggies started shooting the lights out, making 5 of 6 -- four of them from beyond the arc -- to draw within 66-65 with :42 left. CSU was clearly unhinged, committing fouls out of frustration, turning the ball over, and getting whistled for a T. Utah State hit 8 straight free throws the rest of the way, including 6 by Spencer Butterfield, to forge ahead and stay there. To recap, they close on a 22-7 run to win it 73-69.

ODU pulled away in the 2nd half, with 8 unanswered points out of the gate. The Herd got as close as 4 with 14:00 to play, but the Monarchs weren't seriously threatened as they win it 73-58. They dominated the boards 39-26, with each of their 9 players who saw action today logging at least one, and 6 grabbing four or more. Sophomore guard Aaron Bacote led the way with 25 pts & 8 reb.

In the Pac 12, #5 Colorado nearly saw their NCAA hopes evaporate. After breaking a 50-50 tie with 6:30 left, the Buffs scored 8 straight to build their biggest lead with 3:09 to play. But #12 USC went on a 6-1 run down the stretch to get within 3 before Byron Wesley missed a three at the buzzer that would have tied it for the Trojans. The Buffs survive, 59-56.

BU in early trouble in the Patriot final, trailing American 16-7 with 7:30 left in the half at Agganis.

And the Terriers get a 3-pt play to stem the bleeding. Still, 8 turnovers for them so far is pretty ugly.

EDIT - Another hoop cuts it to 16-12, but they just missed an easy look down low.

EDIT - The Terriers' struggles continue, down 24-16 with :05 left. Darius Gardner with a dozen for the Eagles. And after a time-out to set up the final play of the half, BU gets called for traveling. Good fucking Christ...

Despite dominating in ORB (5-0), steals (5-1) and opponent turnovers (10-6), BU is turning into a complete shit show when they have the ball, shooting 6/24 from the floor and 1/9 on threes. Mind you, American hasn't even been awarded a free throw yet.

* MEAC top seed NC Central annihilated #8 Howard, 92-46.

* In the MAC, #5 Ohio U (22-10) is facing a stiff challenge from #8 Miami OH (13-17), with the Bobcats up just 56-55 with :38 to play. The RedHawks just sank a pair at the line, and it'll be Ohio ball after a time-out.

EDIT - Instead of holding the ball, Nick Kellogg drives straight to the hoop, makes the layup, and gets fouled, nailing the FT to complete the 3-pt play. Miami was not expecting that.

EDIT - Willie Moore misses a three, and Miami has to foul. Two more FT's and the lead is 6.

EDIT - Ugh. Horrible Miami turnover leads to a Kellogg breakaway layup and an 8-pt cushion with :14 left.

EDIT - And that'll do it. Put the checkmark in the "shove it down their throats" column, not the "let's hold on and make them come after us" column. Ohio wins, 63-55.

So GA Tech has missed 24 FGs and 3 FTs tonight, while grabbing 12 offensive boards. That's 44% of all their missed shots going back into their hands. BC getting killed overall 32-17 in rebounding, and they're down by 10 on the scoreboard with 10:48 left.

EDIT - Heh. Back from break, and the announcers tell us GT has 7 ORB on 9 missed shots in this half alone. Same wavelength and all that...

American's zone continues to flummox BU, forcing them to take crappy outside shots. The Terriers are 1/10 from deep. They'd gone scoreless for over 5 minutes -- until that layup by DJ Irving, his first points of the game with 9:55 left. They still trail 35-26.

BC on a 7-0 run, and they're down just 3 with 2:11 left. Didn't see that coming.

Heckmann (10) and Owens (3) have score all the Eagles' points in the last 6 minutes.

EDIT - Until Olivier Hanlan hits the floater and cuts it to 1 with 1:43 left.

EDIT - Tech really falling apart down the stretch. Heckmann ties the game hitting 1 of 2 FTs with :52 left.

EDIT - Foul underneath on Heckmann on a GT drive, and it looked like he had all ball with no body. GT makes 1 of 2. BC ball, down by 1 with 33.5 left.

EDIT - Smart time-out there, BC had nothing working. They'll regroup with 16.1 on the clock.

EDIT - Hanlan drives, gets his shot blocked, but he draws the foul with 5.2 left -- and he misses the first. Makes the 2nd to tie it.

EDIT - GT drives the length of the court, forces contact with 2 Eagles as he lost the ball, no foul called, and we're on to OT. Good no-call there.

In the New Big East, Seton Hall was up by as many as 13 over Butler (with 9:30 left), but had to hold on for a 51-50 win. Gene Teague with 14 pts & 13 reb for the Pirates.

BU is toast, down 54-34 with :45 left. They couldn't have possibly laid a bigger egg. They'll go to the NIT, but the American Eagles get the NCAA auto-bid from the Patriot.

Meanwhile, BC is up 67-66 with 1:33 left in Greensboro.

GT's Trae Golden ends a nearly 5-minute field goal drought for the Jackets, and he gets fouled & hits the FT to put them up 2 with 32.2 left.

EDIT - Man, a disjointed possession there for BC, but they still got it to Anderson underneath for what should have been an easy bucket -- and he was way off. Heckmann just fouled out with 14.7 left.

EDIT - Golden hits both FTs, GT up 4. BC misses again at the other end, and that'll do it. A spirited comeback, but Jesus did they dig themselves a hole tonight. It's a 73-70 final after a garbage BC three at the buzzer.
