In the Colonial, #5 Northeastern just knocked off #4 Drexel, 90-81. Scott Eatherton racked 23 pts & 15 boards, while David Walker hit for 18 pts. Zach Stahl scored 19 pts & grabbed 12 reb off the bench. In tomorrow's first semifinal, the Huskies (11-20) will get top seed Delaware (23-9), who advanced past #8 Hofstra 87-76 after trailing 40-37 at the half. Davon Usher's 28 and Jarvis Threatt's 23 led the way for the Blue Hens.

Still to come in the quarters tonight: #2 Towson vs #7 James Madison, and #3 William & Mary vs #6 College of Charleston.

Stony Brook has a 26-9 lead on Maine in the 3rd America East quarterfinal of the day.  Even though the Seawolves are only shooting 36%, they are holding Maine to 19%.

It's 37-16 at the under 4 timeout.  The Seawolves are dominating.  Maine is just 5-23 from the field(23%) and has 10 turnovers.  Player of the Year Jameel Warney has 9 points and 5 rebounds already.

One tidbit from the Vermont game: Brian Voelkel had the first triple double in AE tournament history today.  10 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists.  This is a 4 man too.

The Ohio Valley championship is underway on ESPN2. #3 Eastern Kentucky, which frustrated the hell out of #2 Murray State last night on the way to an 86-83 upset, is off to the races in a huge way. They're up on top seed Belmont 12-0, a little less than 4 minutes in.

EDIT - And the Bruins finally get on the board with a put-back following a time-out. But the Colonels are just kicking their asses on the boards while playing smothering defense, and have drained all 4 of their threes.

EDIT - Make it 17-2 now. 5-for-5 from deep, and four different players have hit them. FWIW, the teams split their season pair, with both games played within a 10-day span in January. EKU won at home 74-63, then fell 84-81 at Nashville (though in the latter game, a garbage-time Colonels trey with a second left made it look closer than it was).

EDIT - Belmont answers back with a 7-0 run, drawing to 17-9.

This is one of the most overmatched teams Maine has ever had, but just like Kentucky they're ridiculously young. No seniors and just 4 juniors. This was Ted Woodward's 10th year at the helm, and they did lose a lot of firepower last year, so I doubt they'll can him.

Of course, Maine did the most important thing in the eyes of all fans and alumni, which was to sweep UNH. ;) But I still have no earthly idea how they beat Middle Tennessee (23-8) in the Dr. Pepper Classic during the holiday break, or how they lost to Chattanooga by just 6 in the title game.

Tonight, they should really just wave the white flag right now and let the Hartford-Binghamton nightcap get going at a more reasonable hour.

Eastern Kentucky is stepping on Belmont's throats, now up 28-14 with 7:16 left.

EDIT - Belmont clawed back to within 6, but EKU takes a 34-26 lead into halftime.

Another shining moment in today's Big South quarterfinals. Adam Weary of #1N High Point buried a jump hook from the right side of the key to give the Panthers a 60-59 lead with 5.9 seconds left. #4S Winthrop gets the ball to junior guard Andre Smith, and then this happened:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaQ9nbJ4Jow

March Madness, baby. Smith finished with 12 pts, while Keon Moore lit it up for 23 on 8-of-12 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.

It's being called an "upset" since the Panthers won the North division, the Eagles' conference record (10-6) was 2 games worse than High Point's (12-4), and they also trailed HP in RPI this morning (169-195).  But Winthrop's now 19-12 overall while the Panthers are 16-14, and the Eagles were also ranked higher heading into today's action by both KenPom (221-249) and Sagarin (233-270). Anyway, High Point is on its way to the NIT with an auto-bid as a regular-season conference champion.

Winthrop moves on to face #2N UNC-Asheville (17-14), 96-87 winners over #3N Radford (21-12) in a semifinal tomorrow at noon. The Bulldogs barely ran 2 deep into the bench today, with reserve center Jaleel Roberts getting only 5 minutes while the 5 starters and backup guard Corey Littlejohn, the only others to see action, all played at least 28 minutes. Guards Jaron Lane (29) & Andrew Rowsey (27) led the UNCA onslaught, while center D.J. Cunningham was a beast with 19 boards & 18 pts. The Bulldogs were also whistled for a shockingly low 12 fouls, while Radford was called for 26.

As a Winthrop alumnus, I could watch this all day long.  Exciting to see the team make a run as this was considered another rebuilding year; next year was when they were really supposed to make a move back towards the top of the Big South.  The offense has made a quantum leap this year (albeit from "abysmal" to "not bad") thanks to Freshman Keon Johnson and JUCO transfer Keon Moore.

They went 2-0 vs. Coastal Carolina this year, including an OT thriller on the road.  Can't wait for noon tomorrow!

Belmont is not going away. It's a 51-48 EKU lead, just under 9:00 to play.

EDIT - And we're all tied up 54-54 with under 6:00 left. EKU is now looking incredibly tight (i.e. 2004 Yankees), and they're reacting petulantly when they're called for fouls as if the dream is slipping away.

EDIT - Holy crap, Glenn Cosey just nailed one from about 10 feet beyond the arc to put the Colonels back up 3.

EDIT - Looks like the tie is spurring EKU to defend their hill. They've scored 8 straight now, 4:16 left.

EDIT - EKU's Corey Walden made a great steal and had a chance for a breakaway lay-up to put his team up 9, but he showboated it with the ball-handling, attempting the one-handed dipsy-doo, and lost control of the ball. Belmont goes back the other way and nails a three to cut it to 4. Could be a turning point. 1:57 left.

EDIT - They find Cosey on the cross-court pass, and he's left all alone to drill a trey. After a Belmont layup the other way, Colonels lead 68-63 with 1:19 left.

EDIT - Belmont's comeback falls short. The Colonels knock off the top 2 seeds, and they're waltzing. Belmont automatically qualifies for the NIT.

MAAC quarterfinals update...

#1 Iona had no trouble whatsoever with #8 Rider, 94-71. The Gaels led by 16 at the half and just cruised behind Tre Bowman's 28 (9/13 shooting, 5/9 on threes), Sean Armand's 20, and David Laury's 18 with 11 boards. As a team, Iona shot 60% from the floor (31/52). They hit 11 of 25 threes, so they were 20/27 on 2-point buckets (74%).

#4 Canisius just advanced past #5 Siena, 71-65, as Billy Baron (Jim's kid) leads 5 starters in double-figures with 17. Chris Manhertz grabbed 11 boards, 5 of them ORBs. Brett Bisping had 22 pts & 9 reb for the Saints (15-17).

So the Gaels (21-9) & Golden Griffins (21-11) will meet in the first of tomorrow's semifinals. Still to come tonight in the quarters: #2 Manhattan vs #7 St. Peter's, and #3 Quinnipiac vs #11 Niagara.

The #2 Jaspers held serve, but only after a stubborn Peacocks squad held a 39-34 lead three minutes into the 2nd half. Manhattan then outscored St. Peter's 38-16 until the final seconds of the game.

Meanwhile Niagara's upset train is still chugging, but we'll have to see if they have enough coal, They led 24-15, but Quinnipiac has scored 7 straight to draw within 2 with under 8:00 left in the half.

In the Patriot League, BU ended up winning over Army 91-70.  They await the winner of Holy Cross and American for the championship on Wednesday at home.

The Crusaders led 28-22 at the break, but the Eagles destroyed them in the 2nd half 35-18 on the way to a 57-46 victory. So the top two seeds will play for the auto-bid.

After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes a 12-0 run by Coastal has given them a 10 point lead.  Winthrop missed some good looks from 3 early on, and can't seem to get any offense generated as of late.

Edit: And as soon as I type that, 4 quick points for the Eagles after a good TO by Kelsey.  They overcame a double digit first half deficit in the first round against Liberty.  Let's see if they can do it again.

Frustrating to watch from the Winthrop side.  Eagles are getting good looks from 3 and can't throw it in the ocean.  Meanwhile, Coastal can seemingly pull up for a guarded 3 and bury it whenever they want.

50-36 with under 12 minutes left.  Gonna be an uphill climb for Winthrop.

And they just lost Keon Moore with 4:30 left. Still down 9.

Yeah, if they'd hit even some of their shots, this obviously would have been a different ball game. Winthrop has been executing pretty well in other areas, in terms of rotating the ball, getting open looks, and defending in the half-court. But the fast breaks spawned by some of those misses have made it tough.

So the Atlantic Sun final is showing up in ESPN's scoreboard as "delayed", and ESPN2 is showing bonus coverage of FSU-Syracuse. Anyone know what's going on at FGCU?

EDIT - Never mind, underway now. Mercer up 12-11 ten minutes in.

EDIT - Since a 13-13 tie with 9:05 to play, Mercer's on a 16-2 run. Time out Eagles with 3:30 left in the half.

CAA: Northeastern has cut a 14-pt deficit against Delaware down to a 22-21 game with 9:00 left in the 1st.

EDIT - The Huskies tie it 24-24 on a Scott Eatherton bucket & FT. NU is killing the Hens on the boards 17-9, with a 6-0 margin on the O-glass.

MVC: Wichita up 35-24 on Larry's alma mater with 3:44 left in the half.

Make it a 20-2 run, before FGCU hits a pair at the line to close out the half. Mercer up 33-17.

FGCU is shooting just 21% (5-for-24). For perspective on how awful they've been, they actually have more offensive rebounds (7) than buckets. Mercer crushing them on the boards (24-14, 11 offensive).

A-Sun: FGCU has outscored Mercer 25-10 in the 2nd half to draw within 43-42 with 9:00 left.

Colonial: Delaware starting to put some space between themselves and the Huskies, up 8 with 12:30 left.

--- EDIT - Now a 74-52 lead with 8:55 left. NU wearing down and not playing nearly as aggressive, and things are falling apart quickly. Not a surprise, since Delaware has better athletes and more of them. Blue Hens leading 16-2 in fast break points. Devon Saddler just buried a pair of threes for UD.

Crunch time in the A-Sun, and FGCU is back within 3 at 59-56 with 2:21 left. But they just missed a pair at the line.

EDIT - Eric McKnight just fouled out on an over-the-back call at the offensive end. He joins Chase Fieler on the FGCU sideline. Both bigs are done, and likely so are the Eagles. After 2 FTs, Mercer now up 7 with a minute left.

Wichita punches its ticket, 83-69. The Sycamores should be a shoo-in for an NIT bid.

EDIT - And moments later, so does Mercer, 68-60. Dunk City is no more, but they'll probably get the call for one of the postseason tournaments.

In the America East semis, top-seeded Vermont(15-1 in league and won by margin of over 20 ppg in league) loses to fourth-seed Albany 67-58.  It is the most shocking result I can remember as UVM crushed everyone in the regular season.  They fell behind by 16 at the half and could never recover.  The second semifinal will start at 7:50 between #2 Stony Brook and #3 Hartford.  Whoever wins will host the championship game on Saturday at 11:30 AM.

Edit: forgot to mention, this game was on Albany's home court and Vermont is now 1-4 in the AE tourney vs. Albany.

Huge bummer. I was really looking forward to seeing another title game played at Patrick Gym, one of the best small-facility atmospheres in college hoops. And this year's team was a crapload of fun to watch. That Duke game will live in infamy.

Vermont might not be the only top seed to fall tonight. In the SoCon, #1 Davidson (20-11/15-1) has been forced into overtime by #5 Western Carolina, tied 86-86 in Asheville NC.

EDIT - 30 secs left, Davidson down 1, just missed the first of 2 FTs...  and made the 2nd. Tie game.

EDIT - Holy crap. Foul called on Davidson's Jake Brooks with 3 seconds left. W. Carolina can win it at the line.

EDIT - WCU hits both FT's to lead 99-97.

EDIT - The Wildcats need a miracle, and didn't get it. They're off to the NIT, just like UVM's Catamounts. Meanwhile WCU's Catamounts have a chance at the dance,
