SOURCES: Tonight’s Holiday Bowl between UCLA & NC State is getting canceled. The Bruins D-Line room has been decimated by Covid issues.

Was listening to Paul Finebaum's radio show while driving. He kept referring to Houston as Cincinnati.

I’ll be surprised if the Alamo Bowl happens. Oregon’s being hit by covid, opt outs and injuries.
If Oregon bails out we may have an NC State/Oklahoma game somewhere, at some time, in one of the bowls. Holiday Bowl officials have not cancelled the game this year but are instead looking/waiting for an opponent to play the Wolfpack. Rumors out there is that UCLA players voted not to play today. If this is true like wtf.

Edit: Holiday Bowl officially cancelled. It would be interesting to know if NC State is ready to jump in on 2-days notice somewhere. This could get crazy.

I've got a box of Cheez-Its waiting for today's 5:45PM kickoff in Orlando. The salty, cheddar-"ish" squares are one of two favorite, guilty pleasures that I allow myself to partake in when visiting family in NH. Go Tigers!

right here
Didn't expect them to win with all the good players Fuentes ran off and half the starters out. But ouch.

Clemson knocks off Iowa St. in one of the better 20-13 games I’ve watched in a while. Cheez-Its and Tangerines for everyone!

Unusual ending. ISU qb on 4th down scrambled for a first down, had crossed the line to gain by a few yards, but got stripped. He recovered the fumble, but 7 yards back. So Clemson got the ball. Had he slid, they still had 3 or 4 plays left to get 50-60 yards.

That's some peculiar play calling by Tennessee. Best case is a 57yd fg try?

Justice says blocked kick returned for 6.

Guys this isn't even controversial, the ball is dead by rule as soon as he is no longer actively moving forward. There is a reason it took replay .2 seconds to confirm it.

Great game and I for one am always happy when Tennessee loses. That review call was not controversial at all - sure the whistle might’ve blown too early but oh well the whistle doesn’t matter either there.

The whistle hadnt blown and he was moving forward is what a lot of us are seeing.
Moving forward is clear since he made the ez eventually. The replay with the whistle was clearly after he lunged across on that one replay.

If he is continuously held the entire time, yes.

Whistle timing, like flag timing, is irrelevant.
Can you explain the latter? The play is live until a whistle is blown no? Refs can actually just arbitrarily say well, no, the play was over 2 seconds before my whistle?

Why make the caviate that he has to be held the entire time? If it is absolute, like you say, then the moment he is shoved back, forward progress has been stopped.
Because he has to be both stopped and under control.

Look, I hate the rule and think Tennessee got boned by circumstances. But it’s been a rule forever.

It’s situational.

If they are ruling forward progress has stopped, then yes.
The whistle is irrelevant after a referee rules forward progress has stopped.
But clearly he was not stopped. He moved another 1.5 yards forward since he was
Hit in the backfield.

ill edit to remove ‘clearly’ and say ‘to me’. I dont know how to do the cross out on a phone.

I couldn’t care less about either of these teams, but the RB made a great play and got hosed.

He actually was stopped for about two seconds, which is plenty of time to justify the call. However, his teammate arrived after a couple of seconds and tried to pull him into the end zone and he suddenly remembered to extend the ball.

As I said, I dislike the rule because it’s inherently arbitrary. But he was absolutely stopped, the ref made the call and began to move in with his arms waving. The problem came because there was a delay between when he decided to make the call and blew his whistle, which created the confusion.

Welll. Agree to disagree. But the whistle not coinciding to end of the play seems a huge flaw.

Anyway, Pitt being on 3rd string qb isnt great

Which, by the way, is a foul (though obviously seldomly called).

I think it's kind of a 50-50 type play. The runner was held up, but often times at the goal line (and especially 4th down, since forward progress is often blown quickly to avoid a cheap fumble) the players are given a lot more leeway to decide it. But I'd rather call forward progress than flag helping the runner.

As to the whistle, an old officiating axiom to stop young officials from blowing inadvertent whistles is that "The whistle doesn't kill the play, the play kills itself". The ball is dead when the official judges it is dead by rule. Also, even for quick decisions there is lag time between when the official makes his or her determination, grabs their whistle, blows it, and the sound reaches wherever ESPN put their microphone in a very large stadium.

We were zooming with friends last night at 7, but I was hate-watching the game (not a Vol fan), and I may have let out a few off topic utterances when he reached across the line, then some other ones when the call was upheld.

Have watched really few Bowl games so far but really happy I DVR’d the Music City Bowl. It was great but more happy I did it because it was so so long (and could have been longer) because of all the injury timeouts and other stoppages. That was so long of you had to watch it live. Great game.
