Wow, you're quick. No news on the (presumably minimal) return yet, but this frees up a MLB spot for J(ohn) R(yan) Murphy behind McCann.

Cervelli and Romine are both out of options, so at least one of them had to go, if not both. Cashman did very well considering that.

I hope Pittsburgh doesn't resign Martin. I'd like to see Cervelli play a full season.

Agree. His walk rate is high, but a spiffy new left side of the infield should help to mitigate that somewhat.

Not only that sometimes these guys can be late bloomers, or have a year or two where they bust out. Not a bad attempt to catch lightening in a bottle by Cashman.

For whatever it's worth, I just called my brother, a longtime, diehard Pirates fan to tell him that I think Cervelli would be someone he probably would like, and his response was "the best thing about this is that I no longer have to look at that fucking Justin Wilson.  all the stuff in the world, and all he ever does is piss us all off! The next important out he gets will be his first one!"

smiling Joe!  By the way, I'm moving to Munjoy Hill in April!  I actually cut my brother's rant off early:  He went into a "And that's Justin Wilson on the mound: ball one, ball two, ball thee, ball 400 etc etc etc"

Hehe. Yeah, he had a bad season this year, but was very good in 2013 and hopefully the fresh surroundings will get him back on track.

As a Red Sox fan, I'm happy to never have to look at Cervelli's face or his .900 BABIP in Fenway again.

Shocked that you left out his post-strikeout fist pumps. Easy to root for but also easy to hate.

Cervelli is underrated, if you ask me, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting for the Pirates now that Martin has left. He's an excellent pitch framer and showed some good offensive ability last year. McCarthy tweeted out, after he was traded, something about him being a stud.

Cervelli is great offensively when he is roiding!

He's been consistently solid when he plays, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy:

"Aside from the concussions, which are basically part of the job as catcher, most of Cervelli's injuries have been flukes. In 2011, he broke his foot. Last year it was a broken hand, then his PED suspension, before he ended the season on the DL with a sore elbow. This season he made it a whole two weeks into April before he strained his right hamstring and ended up spending over two months on the DL."

Also he had a series of migraines this past Sept that caused him to miss games, supposedly unrelated to concussions, but who knows. I certainly wouldn't be too confident he could play 100+ games until he actually does it.
