WTF. This is out of nowhere. I thought they were keeping Richardson.

I hope he remembers how to shoot! I was more a Coby White fan, but there's some logic in getting more of a passer. Strongly suggests Smart is sticking around, which I think is a positive

selling JRich high, buying White low

IME has to know White well from his time in SA

Schroder probably getting moved?

Wow---if there's a 'real' first in there that is a pretty stiff price. I hope they are correct about the fit.

4 years left on contract, $15.1M cap hit, but with Langford going with Richardson, they save ~$200k in cap.

Edit: Richardson and Langford, apparently.

Brad trying to figure out how long he can be in charge without having to make a 1st round pick.

Surprised at Richardson moving. Can White shoot better than he's been shooting?

Wow, this is kind of unexpected. Similar ages, similar players? Richardson has been at 40% from 3pt this year while White has underwhelmed at 31% (career 34%). I don’t know enough about him defensively — better/on par with JRich? Looks he signed a 4/$73m extension last year that will have him in Green thru 24/25’. I’d be interested in the takes from the gurus here. Feels kind of a wash — with upside on the contract?

That's a huge price; Romeo is a useful rotation player (even if Ime doesn't really have a big enough rotation).

White is a nice get, but feels like an overpay. Presumably, Ime is a big fan from SA days and celts really like the fit.

I wonder if this means there's a Smart deal out there?

It's a fake first, so it's really J-Rich, Langford, and maybe a 2nd pending the specific protections.

EDIT: Nevermind, tweet is gone and the actual protections are definitely not a fake first.

protected 1-4 means SA gets it if it is anywhere from 5-30, so it's definitely going out this year barring both an epic collapse to miss the playoffs and some crazy lottery luck

Hope they really like Derrick White, because that's a decent amount of capital for him. Even if Romeo is essentially worthless (and I don't think he's worth much more than that, considering he's only locked in for one more year before you have to make a decision), this is a lot to move for a 27 year old bench player who is unlikely to get much better.

How is it a fake first? If it's protected 1-4, isn't it almost guaranteed to go to the Spurs? I must be missing something.

Chris Forsberg: Celtics can take Derrick White into the Evan Fournier trade exception and add some time to use that. Celtics remain out of the tax by including Romeo Langford in the deal.

I think Pop is going to make a player of Romeo and quickly. Him and a first feels like a lot to give up. Might be a good deal anyway.

I hate this so much. Guy is only a year younger than Richardson, and makes more money, is a worse shooter, is a worse defender, is signed for a lot of years at an escalating price, and the only thing that he does better is get assists. Giving up a first and Romeo for him is a lot. Can anyone sell me on this? Seems awful. On court talent downgrade now plus we get worse in the future.

One thing on White, his shooting is down, but he was an absolute killer on corner 3s last year... 48%.

He's the epitome of a 3 and D guy.... truly is your 2nd Smart, but with more shooting (and a bit less defense).

How does that make it “fake”? It is likely in the 20’s perhaps, but not sure what you mean ?

This deal mostly comes down to what you think of the improvement from Richardson to White (while also considering contract difference between those 2).

Three point shooting, last three seasons:

White: .366, .346, .316 (.344 career)
Richardson: .341, .330, .397 (.361 career)

Of course other than the numbers I can look at on basketball-reference, I don't know anything about this guy. I'm trusting you all when you say he's pretty good. His overall numbers seem fine, but not the three point shooting.

White is a better player than Richardson. The rest is just spare change in the current scheme of things. And if you draftniks are correct, does anyone besides people who watch NBA for binky development care about a protected (ha!) 2022 draft pick?

Somewhere
White probably starts for this team, and he’s signed for 3 more seasons at Smart money. The Spurs definitely don’t dump him for nothing. With so many teams contending you really can’t expect starter caliber NBA players to fall off the back of a truck anymore.

White started almost every game for SAS. He is not a bench player.

RAPTOR absolutely loves Derrick White.
