why are fake draft picks allowed? most 2nd rounders are worthless anyways. why not convey a late 2nd from somewhere?
Fake draft pick just means it's protected for a number of years, and the answer is... why not, if it wasn't allowed teams would just send $1 instead. This way if a team unexpectedly makes a deep playoff run they give something up. I think the BRK pick last year was a "fake" pick from like 4 years ago that conveyed because they got Durant and Harden after that.

Do they need to do more to protect against the Jaylen all star game possibility?
I'm pretty sure moving both protects against that, but Keith Smith thinks this portends another move?

They aren’t actually “fake.” They are usually top-55 protected, which just means they are unlikely to convey unless the trading team is really good.

All due respect to Keith Smith, but the next time he gets some kind of trade deadline prognostication right it will be the first time.

All I know is that if Stevens is negotiating with other teams, his position would appear to be marginally strengthened by eliminating the need to get under the tax as part of that transaction.

I think the Danny Ainge style “fake pick” is simply top 55 protected and similar doesn’t convey.

yeah when I say fake pick it's pretty standard around the NBA.. top 55 protected for a number of years then it expires if not conveyed.

Yeah, Smith is a really good cap guy, he's not the guy teams generally leak to first, which is why he isn't going to get "Scoops", but he can tell you what a move with the cap means. He was noting that freeing up that much space that early in the day means you have a lot more ability to make other moves.

This was definitely the move needed to make a deep run in the playoffs. The type of move we've been sorely lacking from Ainge over the last few years.

Will Wyc invest that $11 million back into the roster, or will we spend the next 5 years putting the repeater tax off one year at a time? It's getting frustrating hearing that line year after year. Team continues to get worse because they are so concerned with financials.

is the team worse... they traded 2 guys doing nothing for nothing and got money back.

I don't know that I've seen even a hint of a rumored trade that makes this team any better yet. I mean... Terrence fucking Ross?

This is silly - there was no upside to bol and dozier. They were aquired because they would be easy to move, and paying the luxury tax without a legitimate shot of a chamionship run is silly as well.

Let's grade the team when the dust settles. Again, if there are trading partners who have been playing hardball with the Celtics given their tax considerations, this plus the looming deadline changes the calculus. The best time to go shopping is when you don't really need anything.

It's interesting that with Ainge there always seemed to be rumors of a big splash that ended up in disappointment. Anything we've heard regarding the Celtics this year has been very minor.

GMBS is off to a rousing start this trade deadline. Take the unusable bodies and get under the tax. CHECK Add something valuable to this rising roster before the deadline. . . . ?
