Wow. Love this. Thought he would for sure get an offer he couldn’t refuse for more money and 3 years.

Great deal. Writing was on the wall for role players the moment Lou Williams signed an extension for $8 mil a year before even bothering to hit free agency. Sucks for anyone unlucky enough to have missed the bonanza the last couple seasons.

Source close to the Baynes negotiations: "To call it a negotiation is way overstating it. Conversation was:
Boston: You wanna be here right?
Baynes: Yup.
Boston: Can you do a little less to give us some more flexibility?
Baynes: Sure. Whatever works.
Easiest deal ever done"

Summer League is going to be important for Yabusele. Its a coin toss he is on opening day roster

Unless someone is willing to take Yabusele, he probably sticks on the bottom of the roster. Celtics are going to be bumping up close to the tax, paying Yabusele to not be here for a different 14th man probably doesn't make financial sense for them.

Why?

With a Smart or MLE signing, the roster will be at 15, but that counts Nader, who is completely expendable. Thus, even if Ainge decides to blow through the tax threshold by signing Smart and using the MLE, there is no reason to cut bait on Yabusele yet.

And, if they end up a bit over the luxury tax threshold and need to cut salary, I suspect the market for Morris or Rozier is much stronger among teams with cap space. They are both also on 1 year deals instead of under affordable team control for 3 more seasons.

Getting a bona fide starting 5 for somewhere around 5-7% of the cap is reason to celebrate. Keep working on those corner and top of the key 3's, Aaron!

That's the key. I dont expect him to shoot 3s with the success he did in the playoffs, but if he can throw up 1 or 2 of those a game at a reasonable clip, this deal becomes fantastic.

Aaaay....Beeee....forrrr....threeeeee

Very pleased with this signing. Doubt he would have represented the C's at the NBA Awards show if there wasn't a strong mutual interest for a resigning.

If Baynes is going to start (certainly a reasonable possibility, and a defensible one) that means one of Tatum, Brown, or Hayward will not start.
Brad will go situational with starting line up. But Baynes will get the majority of the starts. Yes, one of Brown, Tatum, Hayward will not start but they will play major minutes (more than Baynes).

When we play Phil/Det/Ind/Tor/etc, Baynes will start. He'll primarily beat on the other teams #5 defensively. Hopefully, he's working on the 3 this summer and he'll help spread the offense.

We're not paying Yabusele to be on another roster. But if he is a bit thinner in Summer League, I could see Danny trading him to unload salary. A rebuilder may take a flier on Yabu to be a late-blooming big that can shoot. Yabu also has a team option next season and the year after, so a rebuilder may also find that attractive. He'll need minutes to develop and the Celtics won't have them for him. Williams is a much more intriguing Big, that will get those development minutes at the NBA level

Great signing for the money, the front court is real deep now and can matchup with anyone. I expect this to really be a 1-year deal with the player option as injury insurance.

Worth noting that the starting lineup on opening night, with I believe only Morris out, was Kyrie/Brown/Hayward/Tatum/Horford.

This is a lineup that will blow most opponents out of the water and I think it’s what should and will start again.

Love was the opposing big in that opening night line-up. Crowder, James, Love, Wade, Rose was Cleveland's starting unit. Hence matching Horford up made the most sense.

Brad will be flexible with his starting unit due to match up and health of players. But I'd expect Baynes to get the majority of the starts

l. Boston is re-signing Baynes using his Non-Bird rights, so as to keep the entirely of their Non-Taxpayer MLE whole.
This part is huge. Rare to find someone who hasn't made a ton of money leave some on the table to be where he wants.

Great signing for the Cs at that rate. It also preserves the opportunity for him to shoot the moon in a year, so he's not totally hamstringing himself. Seems like a nice win win.

Obviously, you like this move.

There are a bunch of classic bigs available. There just isn't a lot of money available to them with the game evolving. Its a game of musical chairs with this group. Many, like Speights, will be going overseas.

So, how much more happy could we be about a signing of this level? Like, not a star or anything, but just, like...

This is literally as well as the business for this slot could have gone, right?

Seems like it’s earmarked for a Smart replacement if he leaves.
Yes. If Smart looks like he'll opt for the QO, the MLE is also usable if there is someone out their they like more than Morris or would prefer to lock in long term (assuming Morris could be dealt to the Bulls who badly need wings). I suppose Ainge would also potentially blow through the tax this year if he thought it was worth it and ownership was on board. There will probably be more talent at the MLE this year than the next 2 as the cap crunch will ease substantially in a year.

If LeBron goes west our need for Morris might be slightly less and we could opt for 2nd unit offense with Tyreke.

Morris brings more to the court than covering Lebron IMO. And in addition to his on court contributions, he provides flexibility in trade now and in season. He's a value player at that salary.

That MLE provides flexibility also. If Smart stays on the QO or otherwise, then having the MLE and some flexibility with Morris, Rozier, and the end of the bench will really help Danny hedge against injuries.

We always think this about our young guys at the end of the roster. Someone will claim Demetrius Jackson on waivers. Someone will take RJ Hunter for free.

Every team has their own versions of Yabusele. It's possible someone would take him for free/little. But just as likely, even more likely in my opinion, if the Celtics waived him he'd pass through waivers and stay on the cap. Same for Nader.
