Just playing with numbers... Boston is now hard capped because of using the full MLE for Tristan Thompson. If they can create a massive trade exception for Gordon Hayward, they would have enough room under the hard cap to accept a player for a salary up to about $20M in a S&T.
Would that be enough for Bogdon? What about if they threw in Semi and/or one of their recent draftees?

It is interesting that Hayward is joining a team who already has someone who was rumored to be one of his biggest haters in Boston. Terry saw them draft Ball and now Hayward - I expect the sulking to start in earnest.

If they get a trade exception from Charlotte it really changes the past 24 hours from a step back to potentially something else. I don't want to oversell it or the player but if they can snag Bogdanovic from Sacramento or a similar impact player elsewhere, they are actually better overall.

Fingers crossed.

What would a 3 team deal look like with Boston/Sac/Cha?

Bos: Bogdan Bogdanovic, Cha 2nd rd pick
Cha: 2nd rd BOS pick, Gordon Hayward
Sac: ?

Do they need to make it a big 3 team deal or 2 separate deals?
Celtics would need to throw a real asset to Sac to get them to play ball. Seems like Romeo would be the obvious candidate there. Or a lotto-protected 1st.

I honestly don't know what Sac would want. I saw someone mention Langford or a 1st. Seems about right given the Bucks offer. I could see the C's getting Monk back too and Edwards being included to Charlotte or the Kings to get rid of the contract.

Is Bogdan a guy that we have heard rumors about vis-a-vis Boston, or is this a guy we are just throwing out there as someone we'd want, but there's zero evidence that Boston is even thinking this way?

I can't imagine this becomes a 3 way deal. The Celtics will give up some 2nds or eat a salary.

The latter, he's the best FA left so people are trying to invent 3 way deals to get him in a S&T where we are paying to get a TPE

The chatter on Bogdanovic is that the Hawks are pursuing him. But Lakers and Knicks Twitter thinks he is going to their respective franchises.

It would be surprising if Ainge didn't call on him. He ticks a lot of boxes in terms of his skills.

Hawks are the cleanest answer as they still have the cap room. Knicks also, but he’d have to want to go there. Lakers don’t have room under the hard cap, do they?

Lakers are done, they re-signed KCP for basically every penny they had under the hard cap

One thing I like about the Thompson signing is that it frees Grant up to replace Semi as big wing depth rather than having him at center all the time. If Grant’s shooting continues to develop, that’s probably a better use of him than as an exclusive small 5.

Also love Thompson in a conference where you now have to go through Giannis, Embiid+Simmons and Bam.

Makes a lot of sense for the Hornets to do a trade. Stretching and waiving Batum is a brutal plan.
I’d assume that they still will stretch Batum. They aren’t going to give up real assets when they can fit Hayward into space.

They wouldn't be giving up any asset, real or otherwise.

They'd be getting one.

Somewhere
Barring a sign and trade, is there anyone the Celtics would be interested in? I kind of like Giles as a reclamation project, but the Celtics are probably not the place for him to rebuild value.

He signed with Portland. Not too much out there that stirs me.

Not really. There aren't any roster spots if they keep Green anyway.

I wouldn't be shocked if they signed someone from Europe to fill Green's spot tho.

I am big on Giles as an upside gamble and think in a scenario where Milsap is the MLE you might have tried to add him. But there's just not minutes/opportunity for him once you have TT aboard.

I am still not sure how the S+T works out in these scenarios. CHA needs to cut a few million. They can do that by stretching Batum, trading Batum to BOS (not happening), or sending some salary to a team with cap space. Where does the S+T for BOS come into play? Does it have to involve a third team?

Charlotte waives and stretches Batum, the Celtics sign and trade Hayward to Charlotte with a second round pick, Charlotte sends Boston back a top 55 protected second round pick(which Boston never gets, by rule Charlotte has to send back at least that)

So Charlotte gets a free second round pick, and Boston gets a huge trade exception for sending out Haywards salary and receiving no salary back.

Above is the very-likely construction, and for the Celtics it's kind of a no-brainer to give a 2nd (or even 2 2nds that we just acquired) to get a $30 mil trade exception. That exception opens up a lot of options within the season and into next offseason depending on specific timing of the league year. Historically many TPEs are not used, and they already have a smaller one around $5 mil, but still better than not having it.

There's really little reason for Charlotte not do that, save three:

1) If they just dislike the Celtics (no reason to think this is the case, especially given last summer's swap)
2) If they feel, competitively, it is bad for them to give Celtics the TPE (seems unlikely given where both teams are) or hold out for a really high return and Celts won't pay
3) They are incompetent (MIL has failed to create a couple exceptions for this reason in recent years)

They also could loop a third team in should the rumors that Rozier is going to be dumped be true.

I think the challenge here is that I doubt Boston is willing to give up a significant asset (like a 1st) without much certainty they would ever get the opportunity to use the exception. To use the exception we need two things:

1) A team willing to trade an asset for what DA is offering
2) DA/ownership believing that asset is worth the luxury tax implications

Remember, it wasn't long ago we had endless posts about how much luxury tax the Celtics were going to be on the hook for because of Hayward (and repeater tax issues). A $30 million exception sounds nice, but Wyc has to be willing to pay it and there has to be somebody worthwhile to spend it on.

If Charlotte is willing to accept something meaningless (like a 2nd), then the equation gets a lot easier.

I think it's pretty unlikely they will use all $30 mil, but I think it's quite realistic financially they'd use $15-$20 mil of it especially since this year's number without Hayward is going to be lower and thus the repeater issues are likely kicked down the road more.

Just to illustrate what you might do with it, you might offer a smaller asset (a Celtics 1st or 1-2 2nds) and use the TPE to acquire a rotation guy with time on his contract

You might also target a guy near trade deadline who has an expiring, giving an asset like above. In 20-21 there's several interesting guys like that---from Otto Porter to Andre Drummond to PJ Tucker to Oladipo to Evan Fournier to Ricky Rubio. Depends how the team who has the player is doing, depends on who else is offering what, but that's the benefit of having it available

Shaq Harrison maybe. I don't think he's been signed yet.

I love the idea of a logjam in Atlanta. One of the eight teams not invited to the bubble suddenly has too many good players?
The Hawks are deep now assuming they sign Bogdan.

Starters: Trae, Bogdan, Gallinari, John Collins, Clint Capela.

Bench: Rondo, Deandre Hunter, Reddish, Huerter, Dunn, Okungwu, Tony Snell, Bembry.

Lots of speculation that they will try to trade JC since he wants a max.
