My recollection is that Terry Duerod beat out local draft pick and HC star Ronnie Perry for the final roster spot (after Maravich and Cowens retired) on the soon to be 80-81 World Champs.

Yes I remember this. I’m pretty sure Perry made a run in minor league baseball but never made it to the bigs.

I didn’t know it until looking up, but despite playing college ball for Kansas Wilt Chamberlain was a territorial pick of the Warriors, by virtue of having been born in Philadelphia.

No NBA team in Kansas. There is an old story about Auerbach trying to get Chamberlain to go to Harvard so he could snag him.

With Muscala, the Celts have six bench players shooting 39% or better from three: Brogdon, White, Grant, Hauser, Griffin, and Muscala, plus Pritchard, who is 40% for his career from three. Lots of long range firepower on this roster.

Attempted threes per 36 minutes:
  • Hauser: (short) career, 9.5
  • Muscala: career 6.1, but during his 4 season with OKC, 9.4, this year, 8.5
  • Brogdon: career 5.1, this year, 6.3
  • White: career 5.3, this year 5.9
  • Grant: career, 4.4, this year, 4.8
  • Blake: career 2.4, since the year he want to DET, 6.3, this year 4.2
Muscala and Hauser are the 2 guys who fire away the most, and I would expect Muscala's number to go up because he'll get more open looks in Boston.

Given that Muscala is jacking up ~18.5 per 36 with the Cs so far, it's looking good

Muscala's release is just so good. It sets him apart from the other Celtic shooting bigs.

Edit: Actually, this Memphis game showed the good and the bad if Muscala. Late in the third, Memphis got him switched onto Ja three straight times and Ja torched him every time. His interior defense was also exploited. Teams will hunt him, and the Celtics will need to protect him.

He won't be the only big torched by Ja Mortant this year.

Despite being picked on by Morant, he managed to put up 10 points on 7 shots in 17 minutes, and grab 5 rebounds. The Celtics bench held Memphis to a 34-34 draw, even though the Boston was deeper into the back of their rotation, with three of their top six players out with injuries.

He looked pretty good to me.

That’s what I mean, “the good and the bad of him.” He’s the best shooting big on the team once you take accuracy and the quick fluid release into account.

The Morant thing was less on Muscala (not many bench bigs hold up in that matchup), and more on the team for a dumb coverage.

Once they stopped giving the switch and went under instead, Morant couldn't put Muscala on an island anymore. No way they switch Muscala onto Ja consistently in a playoff format; this was regular season stuff.

Damn I heard that guy's name a ton of times growing up in Somerville. Never saw him play anywhere, but the folks there made him sound like white Jim Thorpe.

While that's true, he looked especially bad against Morant, even for a big. When Morant scored against him, they weren't even in the same ZIP code.
Others commented already, but no game-planned scenario would have Muscala matched up on Ja Morant. Nobody would leave Kornet or Blake on him either. They'll scheme better if we ever match up against him in the playoffs. Guy is a 160# explosive dynamo. Most dudes look awful against him in space.

True, but the difference is Morant didn't ruthlessly attack those match ups when they happened. I think he knew Muscala was a weaker defender.

We had Pritchard, Kornet and Muscala out there together for a little while. It wasn’t hard to find a weak defender during those minutes. Yikes.
