Came here to praise Dunn. Then saw the video. He's got skills. T'Wolves are suddenly loaded.
There will be some teams who need a PG now that trade season is almost here. Rubio will certainly fetch a solid frontcourt rotation player but I can't see them, or anyone for that matter, making a trade for Noel and his uncertainly contract situation. My money is on Rubio landing in Sacramento in a deal involving Koufos.

Dunn is 22 going at unproven or younger guys. Impressive but i put as much stock in it as I do Rozier.

Im still totally fine w them passing on Dunn for a higher upside wing

I saw the Buddy highlights and it was worse than the box score indicates. Everything you feared about him at the next level was there.

I agree that 22 year olds should generally dominate summer league. On the other hand, it's still a good sign that he's doing that, rather than struggling or something.

Bender looking very good. I am very sad.

He was matched up against Mudiay, who was one of the leagues most promising PGs as a rookie, nearly the entire night. I'd say that bodes really well.

The two plays that sent the crowd nuts was the alley-oop on the games first possession and the crossover that left Sampson stumbling to the floor. Fun night! I'm gonna be sitting with his Dad on Monday so I'm sure I'll bring back some stories here. So very happy for this kid and he's such an awesome kid.
yeah, dont get me wrong, I didn't meant to appear to be down on the guy, I was just pointing out that he should look quite a bit better than the freshman age draft picks. He's had 3 more years of development. They may never be as good as he is now, but I would expect him to look excellent and summer league and by all accounts he does so far. I wish Dunn nothing but the best, didn't mean to seem like a detractor.

The Celtics can't throw it in the ocean. This team can't shoot.

Portis is a beast. I am probably in the minority here, but I would rather have Portis than Terry Rozier.

I don't think you're in the minority. I think this the consensus, if not unanimous, opinion. Passing on Portis was a head scratcher at the time.

Fraymond showing some flashes at the offensive end. Couple of threes and a pretty drive.

Started terrible, but some good signs as it went on.
Yabusele is playing great smart offense.
Jaylen Brown showed good form on his 3 and is very aggressive on and off the ball.

I thought dunn had some pretty dubious shot selection, he hit but the sprint down the floor beat the defender in one step and knock down a three move isn't happening consistently with that shot or with nba players.
He looked very good and bad shots landed making him look amazing as well. He handled and passed pretty well and was a menace defensively, it didn't seem like he was obviously gambling on the majority of his steals.
But he took some bad shots. I think he's going to be solid not great myself. High floor.

The only thing I'll say in Buddy's defense was that it was a one-game sample and his first game. Brice Johnson also was god awful in his Utah SL debut then was a beast the next two games. Having said that I had Hield way down in the late teens on my board iirc so his performance doesn't shock me.

Those are the same shots he knocked down at Providence last year at an increased rate. His release and rotation is remarkably consistent with his ability to shoot off the dribble against pressure. One thing about Dunn is as a former two-way football player he is extremely competitive. He knew he needed to try and take over the game last night with such dreck on the floor with him so I don't necessarily believe he was making bad decisions.

Do game-thread rules apply here? Am I allowed to panic about Jaylen Brown being a bust?

Panic seems a little strong, but he does seem awfully raw. I'd be surprised if he contributes much this year. For what it's worth, his outside shot doesn't look broken. It does look like Rozier is ready to be a rotation fixture. And I like what I've seen from French Draymond.

We know (or should know) that he's raw though and even though I had him 4th on my draft board I never expected him to be in our rotation at least during the first half of the year. I said this before but people are going to be impatient and calling him a bust in his rookie year when this pick was all about his second contract not these first couple seasons.

Bender looks so so good.
Haven't seen Bender but do we really think he'll be playing any substantive minutes this year? He's can't really compete physically, can he?

Sure. He missed a dunk at the end. Although he did go 2-5 from 3P land, so maybe his floor is to be Bruce Bowen. . . .

I think he'll see minutes, he looks like he can compete physically in the way Porzingis could, he's not strong enough to really bang with a C all day, but he'll be fine against the 6'8" PF he'll see most games.

Wow, Jerami Grant nearly Frederic Weissed Zubac.

And Bender looked very smooth and savvy and good. Really hope Brown comes close to his potential.

Simmons is fascinating. Makes crazy passes for his size.
Refuses to take jumpers.
Tries to finish everything with his right, passing up lefty layups for harder RH shots
Strong rebounder.
Lots of turnovers.
He's going to be fun to watch and the Sixers are probably still going to be the worst team in the league.

So like... Tall Rondo? (skill, not temperament). IIRC, Rondo liked to excessively practice going left all the time and was afraid of shooting in his younger days.

Well he's ambidextrous supposedly so the one hand finishing is weird.
I don't really get it re shooting. It's summer league it where you should be unafraid to try. Brown seems to be sending the message of shoot get used to shooting. Don't stress or worry about missing. The thought process is that he hasn't needed to, and he's so good elsewhere he avoids the weakness in games. Up until now he's been able to get to the rim so easily plus the passing. Now the nba isn't going to let him to the rim and certainly not one handedly.

A young Jason Kidd also works as a guy who could control the offense while being terrified of taking a jumper, though Ason was close to ambidextrous. Simmons has certainly shown some of the flair and vision of both guys:

That last one is insane. Rondo and Paul may be the only guys in the league right now who would even attempt that. I read recently that according to a Draftexpress study, assists are the Summer League stat that translate most to NBA success, and that scoring in SL means little.

Rewatching the game. I dont get the Portis love. Ive counted 4 putbacks where the Cs simply did not box him out. Hes a nice player but i mean hes not doing anything so far thats impressive out there.

Half this board could have had his 1st Q buckets

As long as people are allowed to compare Terry Rozier to Michael Jordan, then yes.
Absolutely. I was serious that I liked this part of summer league. The irrational exuberance (or pessimism in my case) is more than half the fun.

This is true between college and the NBA as well. It's because assists are largely a usage stat (i.e., are you the point guard). The worst point guard in the NBA will get a healthy number of assists.

I'm fine with Simmons not shooting much in summer league. Simmons played 1 season of SEC college basketball - summer league is by far the highest level of competition he's ever seen. There's a lot he's going to need to learn besides worrying about getting a shot off too. Spending the games just getting used to a new level of play, even within his current limitations doesn't seem like a big deal. I assume here he's taking 1000 jumpers a day in practice of course.

At Cox Pavillion for the Wolves game. Apparently Kris Dunn had to have his thumb popped back into place at some point during the first game. He wasn't supposed to go today but he's in the lineup with his thumb taped up.

This Wolves roster is horrific. Raptors dominating on both ends. If not for Tyus Jones two 3-pointers they would be down 17-0 with 2 min to go in the first. Nobody else can even come remotely close to making a shot.

Omg he just broke VanVleet's ankles on same move that was the demise of Sampson the other night!!

Raptors have a pretty experienced team as far as summer league teams go. Wright, Powell and Poeltl could be rotation players for the Raptors, and of course they Caboloco (actually Caboclo).

Speaking of Caboclo, how does he look? Is he still two years away or is he close to anything?

He's made some athletic moves with the ball but also shown the BBIQ of a young JR Smith. Total mixed bag.

All Kris is doing today is creating separation and draining jumpers. Sweet stroke off the dribble with soft rotation. Amazing how far his shot has come in 2-3 years. He's now lethal.

J/k

Taurean Prince is sitting directly behind us with his primary agent and younger agent wannabe. It's hilarious as kid after kid come up for his autograph and they are calling him all different names, have their program turned to another team, etc. It's both cute and hilarious.
