Yes, but I thought he put some things into perspective. For example...

"The story polarized any discussion surrounding New England, particularly as it became clear that the 2007 Patriots were a special football team on the field. If you're unfortunate enough to find yourself reading a discussion about literally anything to do with the Patriots on social media, you'll encounter the same debate. The Patriots are either totally innocent of all charges and subject to a massive conspiracy in an attempt to prevent them from Doing Their Jobs or a totally fraudulent franchise that would have been relegated to the Arena League years ago if it weren't for Belichick's unique ability to cheat his way to multiple championships.

Neither side has much of a point; as always, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle. In terms of on-field impact, it's hard to argue Spygate wasn't horribly overblown. It's exceedingly unlikely that the Patriots were the only team stealing signals. As recently as this year, Tony Dungy talked about how the Colts and other teams from his past stole the other team's defensive signals, albeit without recording them on videotape."

"Less logical were the arguments from fans and NFL executives at the time, most notably 1972 Dolphins coach Don Shula, that the Patriots' 2007 season was tainted or aided by the taping. That doesn't make any sense. The Patriots certainly weren't taping any sidelines after the Jets reported them in Week 1, given that every single one of their opponents would have been looking out toward the sideline for anything untoward. They never had a chance to use the signals they taped from the Jets. And while they might very well have had tapes from years past before they were submitted to Roger Goodell and subsequently destroyed, every single team playing the Patriots from Week 2 on that season would have changed its signals to avoid any possibility that New England would have a competitive edge. Anything less would have been suicidally lazy."

"Spygate was overblown in a similar way to the subsequent Deflategate scandal several years later, with Tom Brady likely expressing a preference for deflated footballs in a similar vein to Aaron Rodgers' preference for inflated footballs. The most meaningful case of the Patriots' stretching the rules was the eligible receiver trick they ran out as part of their playoff comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens, but that wasn't actually illegal. (It was unfair to the Ravens, but that was the officiating crew's fault for not giving them appropriate time to substitute.)"

So I think he made the point that Spygate, while breaking the rules, sure, just wasn't remotely as big a deal as people made it out to be.

In a shocking twist, an ESPN writer forgets to mention that it was not, is not, and never has been illegal to record signals.

As to the above post, the closest explanation he give for your conclusion is 1. They didn't do it the rest of the year and 2. Everyone else was probably doing it. It completely circumvents the question of "what exactly did they do wrong?"

Lazy columnist declares truth to be in the middle so he can feel all wise and above the fray and shit when really it's just sloppy.

I don't know that I would call that putting things into perspective.

Some say yes, some say no, but the truth is in the middle. There's no, no, and maybe but really no, so in the middle.

Well I think it's fairly miraculous that an ESPN writer is even giving this a little deference. For him to say that these things were blown out of proportion is, to me, giving some perspective to people who cry "Cheatriots" all day long, but YMMV.

From that Ringer article:

At that point, the referees put three seconds back on the clock and called the teams back onto the field. With the Foxboro Stadium stands empty and freezing Miami players wearing towels and division championship caps on the sideline, Bishop came in to try one more Hail Mary.
My favorite "I was there" moment - as I harassed my friends until they parked the car and we ran back into the stadium. It was the most surreal scene I've ever witnessed at a sporting event (the article didn't mention that there were playoff implications for the Dolphins). I thought the play had a good chance to succeed - but the result was as limp as was described in the article.

Some things to look forward to this season:
  • Pats are 5th all-time in winning percentage. Depending on how the year goes they could jump up to 3rd (possibly passing the Dolphins and Bears).
  • A division title would be their 20th, tying them with the Niners. GB has 28.
  • A conference title would be their 10th, extending their record for most. Pittsburgh has 8.
  • Brady is 60 yards rushing away from 1000 career. He's 32nd all-time in franchise history (18th in attempts). Dion Lewis is 47th in rushing yards.
  • If Edelman catches 65 passes he'll vault Faulk and Coates and be 4th all-time in receptions. 900 yards would move him to 6th all-time. 5 TDs would move him to 10th. He'll need 18 over next few seasons to make the top 5.
  • Gronk is 20 catches behind Edelman. With a little less than 300 yards, Gronk will pass Troy Brown for 4th in yards receiving. He's already #1 in TD catches. If he scores 7 TDs he'll be 5th in scoring.
  • McCourty needs 4 INTs to move into 10th all-time. He needs 11 more over his Pats career to be 3rd. With 9 passes defended he'll be #1 (caveat that this stat wasn't always kept). He's also top 10 in forced fumbles, and can reach top 5 over next few seasons. He's also 11th in tackles, but that stat isn't consistently tracked.
  • Hightower is 19th all-time in sacks and should be in top 15 by end of season and with 14 sacks over next few years will be top 10.

The really amazing part of that is that the franchise had a losing record when Belichick took over and its all time winning percentage was around .460. So they've gone from the bottom ten to the top five during this run.

Is Do Your Job II an add on show to America's Game like last time? Is America's Game after that?
Do Your Job II is going to be the SB Story with just coaches and executives talking about it. Then Americas Game is the same thing with Edelman, Blount and Hightower.

The week of Sept. 3 will be a fun week for Patriots fans.

Not only does the team open the season Thursday night, Sept. 7 against the Chiefs where the fifth Super Bowl banner will be raised, there will also be a week of original Patriots programming, including a special Do Your Job Part 2.

It will first premiere on NBC on Sunday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m. and then will air on NFL Network Wednesday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. as part of a programming lineup that also includes America’s Game: 2016 Patriots at 9:00 p.m. and NFL’s Top 10: Tom Brady Games at 10:00 p.m. It is narrated by Boston native and Academy Award nominated actor Edward Norton.

Members of the organization who are interviewed include Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia, Nick Caserio, Ernie Adams, Ivan Fears, Brendan Daly, Josh Boyer, Dante Scarnecchia, Joe Judge, Brian Flores and Chad O'Shea.

Wow, NBC is running with the debut? Is that nationally, or just in the New England market?

My cousin worked for the entertainment company that spent about a week prepping for the ring ceremony at the Kraft estate but also got to be there for the event. He said he saw Brady walk out from one of the tents to take a whizz in the bushes - and was wearing all of his rings while doing so. Boss. It's still a note worthy of celebration.

This is a remarkable stat:

The record-setting comeback Tom Brady led improved his record to 16-12 (.571) during the past five seasons when the Patriots' opponents exceeded 24 points. Teams lose those games 80 percent of the time. Derek Carr (7-15, .318) is second and Matt Ryan (12-26, .316) third among QBs with at least 32 starts since 2012.

It is pretty good. I especially like the small print "Answer: No. (See Super Bowl pick...)"

Of course there are no guarantees in the NFL and anointing them in the preseason is a bit much, but I like it all the same.

Kinda weak though to find out that the other 3 regional covers include the same sort of design. It looks pretty dumb pitching a cover that the entire NFL is focused on stopping JJ Watt and the 9-7 Texans or David Johnson and the sub-.500 Cardinals.

Athlete Sport Number of covers
Michael Jordan Basketball 50
Muhammad Ali Boxing 40
LeBron James Basketball 25
Tiger Woods Golf 24
Magic Johnson Basketball 23
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Basketball 22
Tom Brady Football 22

He has a decent shot to pass Tiger, but will probably never get to the top 2 and with LeBron being several years younger probably not him either.

I'm not sure why this matters to me since I don't remember the last time I read Sports Illustrated, but I still think it is cool.

Edit: Wikipedia had Brady at 20, I changed it to 22 to match the quoted tweet above, not sure if the actual number is 21 or 22.

As mentioned up thread, SI now does regional covers on occasion which they didn't do in Ali's day, or even Jordan's. So Brady and LeBron have that advantage.

The Green Bay one seems odd:

Is anyone more overrated than the Packers? They won the Super Bowl 7 years ago. Since they they went 15-1 in 2011 (which is great) and they've been between 8-7-1 and 12-4 for the last 5 years (the last two being 10-6). They did get to the NFC Championship twice, which is great, but is anyone outside of the NFC North really focusing on the Packers at all?

It did take Seattle a couple miracles to put them away, although the Falcons pretty much rolled them. They finished off a Dallas team that SRS rated well above them (7.0 to GNB's 2.8). There was that double-hail-mary against the Cardinals that took the game to OT, although their defense promptly let them down. McCarthy is a good coach, unless you're holding him to a Belichick standard in which case everybody sucks. I'd say lots of teams worry a lot about Green Bay. Who would you feel comfortable betting on against them, other than the Patriots?

I guess that's my point. They're a very good team, but are in the same league as Seattle, Arizona (usually), Dallas (now), Pittsburgh etc. I'm not holding them to Belichick or Patriots standards but they are a very good team that's treated as a juggernaut.

I wouldn't put money on Green Bay against a ton of teams include those mentioned above.

SI will sell more magazines with Rodgers on the cover instead of Brady, people are sick of the Pats(which is why the Pats over the Packers is in smaller writing). It's good work to sell magazines.

You know you've arrived when your dominance is a 'problem.'
My first thought was this is a pretty epic cover. However the more I look at the cover the stupider I think they are... Total PhotoShop job. I'm not even talking about the mini guys trying to tackle TB12 and Rodgers. To PhotoShop the top half onto a kneeling bottom looks kind of ridiculous and unnatural. In what world would tom be growling and screaming while taking a knee? Once I noticed it, I can't un-see it. Ahh well, whatever. Madden and SI covers for Brady... what could possibly go wrong?

I went to see Sale pitch at the Rogers Centre tonight. Near the end of the game, I had a back-and-forth with a Toronto fan:

Him: Okay, the Sox. But don't you think the Raptors will beat the Celtics this year?
Me (confused): You mean the Eastern Conference finalists who just added the #3 overall pick AND Kyrie Irving?
Him: Okay, but...but the Bruins - at least the Leafs can beat the Bruins, right?
Me: Life is tough for Leafs fans, I don't dump on them (note - this isn't really true. Actually, what I like to say is "there's nothing sadder than a Leafs fan with hope")
Him: Okay, then.
Me: Could be worse - you could have to play the Patriots, too.

You could have this same conversation (with the odd tweak) in NY, Baltimore/DC, with fans in Florida (though Miami has Stanton, which is cool, and is in the NL, so the Sox don't regularly crush them), Buffalo,...and it will get worse (better?) when the young B's grow into real NHL players.

I love, LOVE the America's Game series. I have all of the Pats ones saved on my DVR and they are my late-night-wife-has-gone-to-bed-one-too-many-drinks-go-to television. So, I can't decide whether it annoys me that they have Edelman again, or it is awesome that the Pats have so many of these that they had to go to Edelman again. I love Jules, but I sort of like the fact that none of them have ever featured a player's perspective a second time. Not sure who else they could have chosen, though. Maybe James White given the role he played in the Super Bowl?

Anyway. /first world problems

I'm with you regarding the ridiculous photoshop jobs. Rodgers' picture is equally as bad. His upper half is trying to escape the rush and find an open receiver while his bottom half is kneeling.
