The Big Lead published this article in January during Super Bowl week.  This is an insight into CBS' thinking which some came to fruition today.  A panel of James Brown, Tony Gonzalez, Peyton Manning, Rex Ryan, and Bill Cowher would be awesome.

* The other name to watch is Peyton Manning. While there are no indications that Manning will retire if he wins a second Super Bowl, CBS privately has discussed the idea of pitching Manning a dual role: a spot on the new CBS College Football Saturday set and a spot on The NFL Today. Manning will be immensely coveted by all the networks whenever he retires, and his background in the SEC playing for Tennessee, plus the fact he spent his entire career in the AFC, are no-brainers for CBS.

* One source said that CBS had been hoping to land Rex Ryan if the Jets had fired their coach. He was a perfect fit for CBS – proximity to New York, knowledge of the AFC, and his blustery nature. But the Jets retained Ryan, reportedly on a 1-year deal. There’s a chance both Ryan and Manning would be available after the 2014 season. Or neither could be. Then is CBS stuck with the same group for two more years?

I don't think that Sharpe is that bad, frankly. He speaks his mind, it's quite entertaining sometimes.

I mostly agree, but him doing the game highlights at halftime was painful.  Of course the real question is why james brown is throwing it to the former coaches and players to do the highlights at all.

The only reason for this is they're copying Bradshaw on FOX, he's the one who started it. All of these shows are very copycat.

I never really watch any of these pre-game shows, but gun to head, I'd choose Fox's team any week over CBS.

CBS, aside from Cowher, was the most excruciating piece of white bread, boring, excrement called "entertainment" ever produced. I'd rather go to a strip club with Jim Nantz then watch another moment of the JB, Boomer, Sharpe, Marino combo.

I'm picturing Nantz walking into a strip club and saying "Hello Friends..."

Right after Dan punched the table the second time Buonoconti lets out a "......Jesus" right as the camera cuts to Len Dawson's hilarious reaction.

I miss that show.  And yeah, I know it's still on, but I miss that crew.

He's an intelligent guy who knows a lot about football and I usually find his opinions interesting. But he is incapable of pronouncing many words or forming coherent sentences and hasn't really improved on that since he's become a broadcaster. I don't really blame CBS for dumping him, if he was serious about his post-football profession he probably would have worked on those glaring weaknesses a little bit.

Dan Marino was basically the opposite, he could speak but never said anything insightful or interesting. Brought nothing to the table.

I think Tony Gonzalez will be fantastic. Charismatic, thoughtful, and played in the league a long time. Huge upgrade over Marino and Sharpe

I really hope they move Boomer to the booth with Gumbel though

That'd be great. Can't wait for the first time Boomer would be calling a Pats game:

"That's a great point Greg, Tom really did thread the needle with that touchdown pass to Amendola. But, may I remind you, Belichick did video tape the New York Jets signals in 2007." *long pause*
