Carlos Correa and the Mets (yes, that's correct) agree on a 12-year, $315m deal

You just have to laugh at this point.
Cots had their 40 man projected at 358 million before this deal.

Simple math this makes it about 385 mil.

This offseason is just bananas.

Do the Mets now have enough on the books for 2024 that they're in the top tax tier then too?

Yeah it looks like they’re right around there currently, $278M, although they need to trade some guys.

Heyman quoted Cohen in the NYPost article with something that sounds so fake, lol:

“We need one more thing, and this is it,” Cohen told The Post from Hawaii. “This was important … This puts us over the top. This is a good team. I hope it’s a good team!”

That’s the funny thing, still gonna be a tough three-way battle for the division, ATL added Sean Murphy and PHI added Trea Turner.

From the Heyman article:
“Correa’s Mets deal is pending a medical. Something arose on his medical with the Giants, which caused the 13-year, $350M deal with the Giants to fall apart. It was said only not to be a back issue, which had cropped up earlier in Correa’s career but hasn’t sidelined him in any of the last three seasons.

Cohen, who recently lamented falling short on Correa, worked out the deal from Hawaii, where he was, with Correa’s agent Scott Boras over what was said to be a four or five hour period following what Boras termed a “difference of opinion” over Correa’s Giants medical.

“This really makes a big difference,” Cohen said. “I felt like our pitching was in good shape. We needed one more hitter. This puts us over the top.”

Of course it had to be Cohen to step in after the Giants got cold feet about Correa's medicals.

Seriously - how bad must those medicals be to first depress his market a year ago, and now this?

Maybe it was posturing to knock a year or two off, or drop some of the AAV, and Boras went to the Mets knowing they'd pull the trigger.

You'd have to think Boras told the Mets what the issue was and they (initially) signed off on the deal. I can't imagine it is "his labrum is about to snap, but we can still do the deal"

I’d be really scared if I were a Rangers fan. DeGrom must be complete toast for the Mets to have not retained him.

All the teams collecting revenue share checks this year must be delighted with Cohen’s profligacy.

The Twins had offered 10/285 before the Giants agreement, and they had his medicals and watched him play all season. Whatever got flagged, it didn’t seem to bother Minn.

Very true: have to wonder that maybe it is a degenerative condition like an arthritic knee for example that the Twins would not have bothered checking on over such a short contract last season, but the issue would have come up for them as well if their offer was agreed upon.

In any case, the Mets do get him for less AAV than the Twins offer and what Bogey signed for. But those last few years are going to REALLY not be worth the AAV if Correa is still in fact anywhere near the organization.

Edit: It may actually be a blow to the Mets long-term success if they win in the first year of this window. Can you imagine sobering up from the victory parade with the elusive "first championship in more than 30 years" and ownership seeing these contracts extending out for 5 years to more than a decade with no greater mountain left to climb? Maybe the quickest fire sale of a WS winning team since the Marlins.

I wonder if Correa had second thoughts about joining the Giants and told Boras to find any way he could to get out of the deal before the ink was dry.

The wife is a Mets fan so happy for her… they should be fun to watch again this year

Right or wrong (on player or terms), this is how you act when you are a large market team in a sport with no cap and you haven’t won in 35 years.

I will say though, I'm happier with Correa being with the Mets than the Giants.

In terms of talent, it does hurt the Giants, but Correa isn't super likeable. He'll fit right in with a team that isn't likeable in general (sorry Mets fans)

You think it is easier for Correa to stay healthy at 3B? SS seems like a more demanding position with all the movement, maybe it is less of a worry for the Mets to have him as a 3B.

Fair point, that wouldn't surprise me. But odd in that Correa is really one of the last dominos to fall and knew how the FA signings were playing out to this point. I could totally see Boras pushing the physical narrative even if not totally accurate, so he can still claim his client took the largest valid offer.

I know the story behind Bonilla and why it’s so bizarre but beyond the Madoff and the fact that they bought him out of a contract etc it’s not unusual to paying a player well after he plays for you. The Red Sox have paid Manny about $2 million every year since 2011 and until 2026.

The Reds are paying Griffey Jr about$3.5 every year since he retired until 2024. It’s all over the place, the Nationals even owe Max Scherzer $105m over 7 years from 2022-2028 from his $215 million deal. Strasburg will only be collecting about $28 million each year for 3 years around the same time from his extension a few years ago.

Stunning. But it's only money. And it's only Cohen's money. I respect the boldness. Maybe they'll regret it, but you only live once.
