Carlos Correa and the Mets (yes, that's correct) agree on a 12-year, $315m deal

I have a hard time picturing the kind of contract that Boston would offer that the Mets wouldn't also do, if not a good bit more.

Given earlier reports that Correa wanted to go to the Mets, that is what I still expect to happen. But if the Twins come in over the top with something close to the longterm deal they offered earlier, future health concerns be damned, that would be very interesting.
I agree.

Hard to imagine any significant medical disagreement at this point given multiple clubs have issues. The chance of a 10/300+M contract with no specific injury language seems to be remote.

Swooping in for a short term 2-3 year high AAV deal might sound nice, but I see no reason at all to think the Mets wouldn’t match that and then some if needed (unless Cohen is just pissed off and done with it??)

Keep in mind that guy almost definitely works for the Angels.

I see the high AAV deal the same way. What offer would the Sox be willing to make that the Mets or another team won’t immediately beat?

I know the Mets are willing to spend, but given that they don't need a SS and already have a young, possible future star to play 3rd, Correa really seems like a luxury.

If Minnesota is desperate and offers a bigger deal, cool. Brett Baty isn't a bad plan B at all. Assuming he is healthy to start the season, give him some more playing time and see what happens. Maybe sign a veteran to share time there.

Maybe an aging 3B with still superb defense would help? Since the Yankees kind of have a little glasnost thing going on and are more willing to be open and friendly, maybe as a sign of good will they can ship Donaldson across town for a bag of balls (but no money) and help them out.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

Enjoy some more Minnesota, Mr. Correa. Hope you like hot dish.

Is Cohen the type who wants to avoid the even the *appearance* of losing -- even a contract negotiation -- so badly that he will overrule everyone in the organization and just go ahead and sign him to the original deal?

It's a wildly different situation, but the Mets drafted Kumar Rocker in 2021 and then didn't sign him under similarly mysterious medical circumstances, even though it meant Cohen/NY would take a lot of flak on social media.

That's something. (I didn't realize Cohen was in charge at that point).

I would think if he's that type, the deal would be done already.

I suspect the Mets are looking for some sort of protection in the deal because they can't get the contract insured, and Boras is floating all the talk about other teams as a way to keep those protections at a minimum (in terms of what they might cost Correa). Ultimately it'll get done and Correa will be a Met because he's probably going to run into the same problem with any other team and their insurers, and the Mets will be the team willing to take the most risk.

Though the front office has basically entirely turned over by this point, I wonder if their history with David Wright (who actually technically is still a 'special advisor', though I dunno if he's actually doing anything) is making them a bit more hesitant if there's already some potential that Correa could basically be unplayable within a few years

I suppose it bodes well for the Mets that Cohen is both willing to shell out hundreds of millions of dollars, but also listens to his people.
